Dragon Encounter rates need to be toned down.

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 3:00 pm

I'm only on Alduin's Wall in the main quest line because I like to do a lot of sidequests and the like, but dragons literally attack me every time I fast travel outside of a city's walls. It wouldn't be such a big deal it's just that when I kill one it burdens me with stuff so I have to go back to deposit the loot at my house (and then fast travel out again and have ANOTHER dragon basically waiting for me) or worse, they don't even attack they just circle around out of bowshot reach and prevent me from fast traveling away.

The high incidence of dragon attacks makes it so that they lose their EPIC feel and become more nuisance than anything.

It used to be "oh man, a dragon fight!" now it's "*SIGH* another dragon"

I have over a dozen dragon souls (and there's been a few dragons I couldn't absorb the souls from, or dragons who simply circled around and never attacked and I just gave up on trying to attack them and went into a cave and hoped they were gone when I came out) with no shouts to invest the souls into, over 100 dragon bones and dragon scales in my house.

The frequency is starting to become annoying and game breaking.

I never play the main quest until I have explored the world and enjoyed the game first. Oblivion taught me that lesson with those damn gates.
I am 50 hours and not one dragon seen (after the into, of course)

I have to agree with this. I have about 16 shouts unlocked and I have 37 extra dragon souls yet to spend. For some reason every time I fast travel to the College of Winterhold I get attacked instantly by a frost dragon.

Dragons are starting to feel like a pest.

I guess the dragon encounters increase dramatically by following the main story, I've barely touched it and hardly ever see a dragon.

Oh if you've looking for shouts to spend your souls on keep returning the grey beards and they will tell you a new location of a shout each time.

It's pretty much harassment at a certain point and the more it happens the more peasants get themselves killed by attacking dragons with iron daggers and wood axes like morons, thus making every town a ghost town.

Agreed, they're not really epci anymore, not even something to be feared, just a chore or an annoyance...

At least Oblivion gates didn't stalk you and plan to ambush you as you simply left your house for breakfast, a quick trip to the temple, or a brisk walk near the stables. :P

Does this only happen with normal dragons or does it happen with ancient, blood and elder dragons too? I've never encountered a random dragon yet, i'm 20 hours into the game and i've done a decent amount of main quest.

I've only done the main story up to the quest to go retrieve the horn and I see dragons all the time. Not gonna lie, it's rather annoying.

i dont mind them, i like there challange rather then the stupid wolves coming up every now and then and die pretty quick.
though im a little annoyed that ive gotten into a fight with 2 blood dragons in the middle of riverwood within 10 minutes and now stuck with 2 dragon carcass's in the middle of the damn road.

I think they are really random. I used to encounter alot of them but now it seems like they are more and more scarce. I sometimes see one flying around in the distance but you don`t have to go after those. On a differetn playthrough they might be everywhere, but on mine I don`t see them very much now.

I'm on the same quest (havent made it to the swamp/marshland in the...northwest I believe? But anyway, I've only seen 2-3 dragons, not counting the intro dragon.

I'm encountering the same problem wtih the College of Winterhold. I've been attacked by something like 5 or 6 dragons there alone.

As for the rest of the game... yeah, it seems like the dragon encounter rate is quite high. 80 hours in and barely into the main quests, I've managed to amass a total of about 100 dragon bones. And that's -after- crafting and upgrading a full set of Dragonbone armour, plus selling off a few more pieces of bone because they're just so damned heavy.

It would be nice to be able to remove the dragon carcasses (or maybe just the random ones) you can pretend that they are like the dragons in Reign of Fire until a mod comes along, as for myself I like having money and dragons have good stuff (bones/scales) compared to wolves/bandits/etc

That's odd, i have been playing for far, far too much and only killed 25 dragons so far.
They're acually so rare for me to come across that i actively hunt them, didn't notice more of them by doing the main quest either.
I rarely fast travel thogh..

I'd be happy with about like, 1/3 of the encounter rate that I'm having. Enough to keep you on your toes, but without being so often that they're outright predictable "as soon as I fast travel, there's going to be a dragon wherever I end up".

So, umm... If you already have more dragon bones and scales in storage than you'll ever need, even if you get hired to outfit the entire city militia with dragon armor, and your main complaint about dragon encounters is that the dragon bones and scales weigh you down too much... Why don't you just stop hitting "take all" and leave the dragon parts on the carcass? You don't need them, carrying them annoys you, so don't take them.

Recently I decided to just walk into a direction on the map I haven't been so far and on the way slaughtered about 4-5 dragons as at my level of 48 they seem to have replaced every other random encounter. The big problem about this is, that an epic creature like a dragon, supposedly the most fierce creature of Skyrim, is reduced to a mere annoyance that is disposed within a few spellcasts. Completely ruins the epic feeling for me.

Same here. I was worried about dragon encounters being too frequent and it looks like I was right. I have two saves, one with dragons and the other without.
