Dragon Shout

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 8:28 pm

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I thought it would probably be best explained by the lore buffs. ;)

WHAT IN THE WORLD is the Dovahkiin saying when he does the Dragon Shout in the trailer? It almost sounds like this:

N'os quo't'caan!
or something like that, but I don't speak Akaviri, so I'm kind of out of luck. :P It also could just be the sound effect afterwards made it clear.

Not sure. I've been listening to it and it seems to at least vaguely correspond to the lyrics of the theme behind it. I tried looking those up but all I could find were the other parts of the song, the "refrain," if you will, that made its debut on the back of GameInformer.

Also, I should note that it's not Akaviri. It's just the Dragon language. There is as yet no indication Akavir is even remotely involved with this story.

Wait, are you sure?

I thought that the Akaviri beings were dragons, and that they disappeared from Tamriel for a while, which would explain why the Elder Scrolls prophesied their return...

Well, they have their own language, and I doubt a dragon shout wouldn't be in the dragon language

The dragon shout is "Fus Ro Dah", which translates as "Force Balance Push".

Well, if the Akaviri are the dragons, then the dragon language WOULD be Akaviri.

Nope. The Skyrim forum is part of the demesne of Lord Sheogorath, and their patron-saint is Malkav. You must be wary of what comes from its residents. So, let's explain some TES V politics, and you will see the true origin of the Akaviri stuff you've been hearing.

Way back in the way back machine, there was a time before Fallout 3. We had, through the divination of publicly available information on Copyright and Trademarks, discovered that gamesas had copyrighted the word Skyrim. Naturally, this prophecy of the future was never fully circulated across all human channels, so only a middling amount of the forum remembers this secret. Thus it was forever debated whether TES V would be in Skyrim, Summerset Isles, Valenwood, what have you. Now, I see your confused look on your face, through your CAT 5, and I can tell your wondering what this has to do with anything.

You see, one of the most commonly suggested plots for TES V, even in the days prior to us divining the secret of Skyrim, was an invasion of Tamriel by Akavir. It would keep getting suggested, over and over again, month by month, week by week. It was still getting suggested right before the Skyrim Teaser trailer. And then, BOOM! We had divined correctly TES V's locale as Skyrim, and not only that, it was going to feature a civil war in Skyrim and Dragons attacking.

The scholars of our forum, deep within their libraries and heads full of references, made the connection that Alduin, the World-eater of the Nord Pantheon, must be the antagonist and the dragons are his servitors. Of course, our dear scholars were right, for they had already received the gifts of MK, the guy who writes a lot of gamesas's weirdest lore books. These gifts, in the form of the seven fights of the Aldugadda (or however you spell it, it features Alduin prominently), and other texts, gave them enough clues to correctly predict Alduin's involvement.

Of course, the libraries of the lore forum are rarely visited, even though they are public. (Their publicity is terrible, half the people here probably don't know this forum exists) So the general public continued their attempts at advancing their favorite theory, the invasion of Tamriel by the Akavir. Grasping on the book, Mysterious Akavir, they twisted an already sketchy text high and beyond, to dark corners of weirdness and confusion. The idea of Akavir invading Tamriel was twisted into a macabre story of tiger dragons and lunacy, and thus, the forum's oldest prediction of TES V's plot was made to fit the Skyrim trailers.

In a less roundabout way, Akavir has nothing to do with the plot of TES V. There are dragons in Akavir, but not all dragons are from Akavir.

The name of the continent is a cartographic joke.

You know, it's time like this that make me wish that the Yokudans set off their nuke sword on Akavir instead of their home of Yokuda. Akavir gets too much credit for practically everything, when it's extremely obscure. The logic leaps people take! It's becoming a point where saying "faries did it" is less of an asspull than Akavir.

The dragons did not originate from Akavir, but it's likely that when the Pangaea of Nirn split from the war between mer and men, dragons got stuck on various continents, save for Altmora which is too cold for anyone. Thing is, dragons are mythical beings, likely around the level of culture-gods or something like Morhaus, the magical flying and talking bull, nephew of Pelinal, and son of Kyne. I guess it'd be easier to say they're demigods.

As mentioned above read this article if you get a chance: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/01/20/skyrim-s-dragon-shouts.aspx\

Specifically:

Spoken in the game, your hero will intone the three words for the full shout: “Fus, Ro, Dah!” Translated into English, “Fus” means force, “Ro” means balance, and “Dah” means push.

The breath and the voice are the vital essence of a Nord. When they defeat great enemies they take their tongues as trophies. These are woven into ropes and can hold speech like an enchantment. The power of a Nord can be articulated into a shout, like the kiai of an Akaviri swordsman.

I want tongue totems.

Wouldn't the Voice of the Emperor ability be best suited to them than imperials then?

Not that I won't look, this forum just seems to have a lot of bloat.

No, because you don't get all of the Colonizing implications that come with Imperials inflicting their worldview on the world and changing others' to theirs'.

Its not my job to read the stickies for you. A link to the imperial library is in the how to become a lore buff sticky.
