Dragon Shouts

Couldnt find any topic exclusively for this, so i made one. Whats your opinion of the dragon shouts? In the magazine it says you can learn dragon shouts and become stronger with them by slaying dragons and possibly by learning from other (very few) NPC's that know them.
It says the dragon shouts can give you great powers, like calling an ancient dragon to your aid, blowing your enemies off their feet and so on. I personally think this looks interesting and can add some extra flavour to the game :)

I was wondering what all that was about, thanks. So basically, if you slay a dragon, the game goes Highlander and you get a new spell?

I don't like the idea of actually hearing your character's voice shout it. It takes away from the immersion since you kind of imagine your character having your voice, not their own.

I agree with you Dutch. Hopefuly it wont sound lame. and @capitalsown : from what i understand you dont automatically gain a dragon shout each time you slay one. Either you gain one, or you become more powerful with one of your already
known shouts. It says your capability to learn new shouts grow for each dragon you slay actually..so that means you dont learn them by killing the dragons.

The slowing down time dragon shout mentioned on the issue really caught my eye. I am excited to see what we will see :D

I hope so. My first character will be a Nord that resembles The Kurgan. Imagine shouting, "There can be only only one!" as you decapitate a dragon.

I meet them with ambivalence. I'm not particularly fond of being a dragonborn to begin with, and I'm afraid the dragon shouts are going to be on the ridiculous side. So long as there are significant qualifications on when and how to use them as well as maybe some drawbacks (after using the shout that slows time down, for example, afterwards YOU are slowed down significantly) I think they can be fine.

Basically will have to wait for more information

I loved turbo in NV I think the dragon shout is gonna be awesome
and doesn't Dovakiin have to yell it in order for it to work, maybe it will just be like a dragon roar or something that doesn't have to do with six/race

I always thought of this when I heard about the dragon shouts:

"The power of a Nord can be articulated into a shout, like the kiai of an Akaviri swordsman. The strongest of their warriors are called "Tongues." When the Nords attack a city, they take no siege engines or cavalry; the Tongues form in a wedge in front of the gatehouse, and draw in breath. When the leader lets it out in a kiai, the doors are blown in, and the axemen rush into the city. Shouts can be used to sharpen blades or to strike enemies. A common effect is the shout that knocks an enemy back, or the power of command. A strong Nord can instill bravery in men with his battle-cry, or stop a charging warrior with a roar. The greatest of the Nords can call to specific people over hundreds of miles, and can move by casting a shout, appearing where it lands."

Kinda worries me.

The whole "kill dragons so you get bullet-time matrix skill and summoning a dragon" seems really arcade-y and cheap.

But there was still the "Argh, Ouch, Raaaawr" voices for each race you picked when fighting or when you get hurt in Oblivion. I don't think it will break immersion...

It's thu'um, right? If so, I expected this, and I love the idea.

Thu'um is the only shout magic rolling around.

According to the lore of The Elder Scrolls Thu'um was a kind of magic the old Nords used. It was actually just shouting really hard, so hard you blow your enemies away. When I read about the dragon shouts I thought it was thu'um until they talked about the time slowing part since i don't know if Thu'um can do that. I still think that they just renamed Thu'um to 'dragon shouts' to make it simpler for the people that don't read the lore.

The name Thu'um has nothing to with the dragon language.
Here is the uesp page about it: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Thu%27um

I hope the bulk of the Thu'um shouts become Greater Powers or something, so that you can't use them against every single enemy you encounter.

Well, if the dragon shout is going to scare the opponents around it, wouldn't an AoE Demoralize spell do the same thing?

Picture this. A Dragon is rauaging a town. The soldiers are about to break and flee. Just then, down a side street, your character appears. The dragon turns to study you. You open your mouth and speak the words of power, killing the dragon (hopefully it's a weak one). The solders turn to watch you, awe in their eyes.

You're damn right I get the feeling they're going to be badass.
