Dragon Shouts through mic/headset - Revisited

Post » Fri Apr 29, 2011 10:25 am

I already avoid "jump around like an idiot in front of the screen" games like the plague. No DDR, no Kinect, no thanks.

A game with a "yell made up fantasy gibberish at the screen; sorry it's not an option, it's a Feature?!" mechanic in it would be one that I wouldn't buy. No matter how cool the rest of the game was.

I voted no. I don't want to be yelling into a microphone while I'm playing.

you wouldnt be able to remember them all correctly, and one syllible wrong and it could mess your entire game up when the shout doesnt work

the only way i see this working is whenever you learn a new shout, you should record yourself speaking the word and it basically work like a macro, so no voice recognition software or anything.. just that u save the shout with your own accent the whenever you say it, the shout will activate.

but as far as the idea goes, i would say not to it..

Voice control never ever works properly.

there was this one game that had voice control.. Can't remember the name now though, Sokom had it. I must research on the matter. That however doesn't mean I'm in for this, I don't want to scream FUS-ROH-TSA-MEH-DERP-DOUH while playing it :P

I think this is pretty much the way it would be effective. It wouldn't really be recognition but more of here are the words you need to say to cause the ground to shake. "Trey - Lo - Mai". And you can say them however you like. Could even say "Ground Shake" and what gets recorded is used as the voice sound it extpects for that Dragon Shout. Though it prob won't be too fun to say 'ground shake'.

if it's possible I'm sure some modder will do it.

personally I'm not excited about getting arrested for shouting at my computer. (If I wanted to do that I'd just get windows vista again. )

Recently I posted a similar question about what fans would think about having Dragon Shouts work through computer mic or console headset on http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1173897-total-immersion-dragon-shouts-through-micheadset/page__p__17329581__fromsearch__1#entry17329581 . However the conversation skewed to the merit of the question rathar than the substance, and the topic was quickly locked.

So the actual in game feature is NOT factual as far as I know. The previous thread alluded to this in the footer of the post. However, the question about what people think about this still remains..

Maybe the volume of your voice will determine how powerful the shout is in game.
Would you be interested in using your own voice to issue powerful shouts in the game? Does the possibility of having to learn and remember phrases in real time intrigue you? Or will this introduce unecessary complications or take away for the flow of combat?

it wouldnt work properly im sure, and would slow down the production of it to a crawl im sure. besides....i dont want my room mate or girlfriend thinking im some sort of mentally unstable person yelling in a different language ^^

What if you say something wrong and your computer busts into flames? Or you accidentally summon a dragon? Too many things that could go wrong!

If you really wanna say it...say it when ya press the button. You'll hear your voice, and the effect will be seen on screen. You really think they'd include voice recording software on a game of this size? For just dragonshouts? When they could just have a button instead? How many disks do you want this to be on?

Besides, you ever record yourself singing and then replay it so you can hear yourself?

Although this would be better than "mash down the A button repeatedly to dragon shout", I doubt my parents would appreciate me climbing on top of my chair and screaming at the top of my lungs at my tv at 3 in the morning.

If I said something wrong because I forgot a phrase for a DS, then I need to go back through my scrolls and study more. If the software engine mistook something I said, then I'd be highly upset. Alas looks like the community of open-world-do-anything-we-want isn't feeling this one though. ..

There are virtually unlimited wants, but limited resources. This is true for all things in life, but you can see it easily in video-games. For every thing the devs spend time creating and implementing takes time and talent away from other things that could be put into the game. What you've suggested (and at first lied about) is the implementation of a gimmick that doesn't add anything that significant to immersion. It's not that surprising that most people would rather have the devs focus on things that would contribute to making the game better overall, rather than shiny features most people won't want to use anyway.

Would it be a cool feature? Mmmmm. Could be. But from my experience working in software and voice recognition systems tells me the feature would take too long to develop and test, and not to mention too costly to implement to make it worth the experience.

The problem I have with speeh recognition is that it only works properly for sum1 with an american accent (im a NZer) so the speech recognition doesnt recognise anything I say.

Ever since Tom Clancy's Endwar I avoid voice control like the plague. It's just too finicky, and my Boston accent tends to make it do odd things.

For me the only time I really get to get my game on anymore is when everyone else in the house is asleep, no screaming for me.

No it would present too many problems. I can imagine fighting a dragon, like in the trailer, and trying to shout the spell down the mic, and it wouldn't recognize the words or pronunciation. It would be too awkward to say the least. And even if they managed to make it as problem-free as possible, what about people with differing accents, or other languages? Those people might want to use the shouts over mics too, but the dragon tongue is a set language, so it would need to said in a particular way. I think it should be kept as close to the game as possible. An activated shout via controller would feel more natural. I also think I might feel less inclined to use them if I had to shout them. I know you could enable the choice between the two, to choose either or, but I still think most will opt for the controller shout, just for simplicity. It just makes more sense in my mind.
