Dragon Shouts through mic/headset - Revisited

Post » Fri Apr 29, 2011 1:05 am

Recently I posted a similar question about what fans would think about having Dragon Shouts work through computer mic or console headset on http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1173897-total-immersion-dragon-shouts-through-micheadset/page__p__17329581__fromsearch__1#entry17329581 . However the conversation skewed to the merit of the question rathar than the substance, and the topic was quickly locked.

So the actual in game feature is NOT factual as far as I know. The previous thread alluded to this in the footer of the post. However, the question about what people think about this still remains..

Maybe the volume of your voice will determine how powerful the shout is in game.
Would you be interested in using your own voice to issue powerful shouts in the game? Does the possibility of having to learn and remember phrases in real time intrigue you? Or will this introduce unecessary complications or take away for the flow of combat?

Actually, the mods comment reguarding spam may have been directed to you. You posted a claim that you have no way of backing up. What did you base your 'Bethesdsa employees' assumption on? That they were taking about Skyrim? Could have been anyone, even other fans.

Also, reposting locked topics is a no-no.

Also, also, I'm sure I've seen a comment from a dev somewhere that completely sinks the 'Dragon Shout with mic' theory.

Sounds interesting, but I think I'd look pretty silly yelling in dragon tongue at my computer.

I can see the issue if the voice control mechanics were not up to par that this could hinder the game experience.

My game experience would be thrown out the window when my Minnesota accent mixes with dragon speek to creat...well, who knows what. I'd much rather push a button.

Meh. I'd see it as a gimmick. Even if it worked perfectly, and each shout was distinct enough to make room for different accents to speak them, I'd prefer to see it be performed on the controller somehow.

Fair enough :)

In any case, I can't see them doing it.

First, it means having to buy a peripheral in order to enjoy a major aspect of the game.

Second, voice recognition software is still hit and miss. I've seen games designed around mic usage (SOCAM for example) fail completely because the player had too broad an accent. Either the software fails to understand the words used or misinterpretes. Again seen players screaming at the screen because they gave an order and the computer sent everyone off in a random direction.

Third, having to learn a fictional language and pronounce it correctly is not immersion. It's just annoying.

No. Nein. Minime. Ne. Non. Nah. Lay....

I thought the last topic made the general consensus rather clear, so I figured I'd try it in international dialects to be clearer.

It's already been revealed through the info that's been released that you activate the dragon shout through pressing a button, and it was said in the interview with the sound guy that Beth's getting voice actors for the dragon shouts. That pretty much sinks this idea.

As for whether or not I think it has any merit, see my first line.

I was thinking that the experience would be that when you learned a new phrase/syllable that a training session could be enacted. In the session, the way you said it inflection and accent and all will be the defacto way the software will expect the phrase to be said. Basically tailored to how you say it.

Hey, from the sound of it, a normal American/English/Aussie accent is not what the guy is using. You just have to put the accent on. I never find that hard. But anyway, if they put it in, it should be optional.

I was talking about the voice recognition software being good enough and each shout being distinct enough that you could speak with an accent and it would still recognize you.

Uh Oh. I play games after the wee ones go to bed, and next to my wife. Not good to be shouting and waking up the kids while making my wife pee her pants!

Would you be interested in using your own voice to issue powerful shouts in the game?
nope

Interesting, but I see it more for riddles rather than combat.
Also, I woder how dialects, foreign languages, etc. would affect things.

It would be amusing as a gimmick feature but certainly not required.

...it disturbs me I remembered "Fus! Dah! Ro!" ....the only thing I got wrong was the order of the last two. Why did I remember that? I think I'm officially over-hyped for Skyrim.

Only if it is optional. I would never use it since I prefer not to annoy people around me while I play my video games. However, if someone else really wants it as an option, I am not gonna give resistance.

Gimmicky.

It might work to sell a few hundred kinect's, people wont be forced to wear a microphone, you might think I sound ridiculous but people have done dumber things with their money.
Rainbow Six 3 had voice commands for tactical decisions and it worked fine, that was 9 years ago. I say do it if it does not inter fear with major development otherwise it's nothing of real importance or immersion.

Actually a feature like this doesn't require kinect but a simple mic.

No problem, I can shout pretty hard.

And you think there is someone that would actually buy a kinect instead of wearing a microphone for the minute the shout would require. Really?

People are buying it for the handful of mediocre five minute games currently availaible for it, aren't they?

Not for a single game, not for a feature so limited like the one we are talking about.
