Dragonborn/Dovakiin, is he descended from the Septims?

Post » Wed Aug 31, 2011 10:25 pm

Apologies if this has been discussed before a lot, but I was just playing Oblivion and noticed that Martin (and implicitly all the Emperors) was referred to as 'Dragonborn' several times, usually by the blades. Presumably this has something to do with their relation to Akatosh.

Now if I'm not mistaken Dovahkiin means Dragonborn, at the very least Dovahkiin is referred to as Dragonborn by Esbern.

Do other people also think that Dovahkiin will be a descendent of the Septims, or is this all coincidental? How would this relate to Alduin supposedly being Akatosh, when the Septims themselves were apparently descendents of Akatosh?

Edit: Corrected a few mistakes (dyslexic here  )

Dragonborn is a god-given title.

I think there are other ancestral lines of Dragon-born's other than the Septims, I could be wrong though ;)

I remember hearing something about dragonblood being in the septim line compared to being dragonborn.. Not really sure what dragonborn implies but someone knows.

The character is not decended from the Septims. In fact, there are many other hero's (including the Neverine so says a theory) that were Dragon-Borne as well, but being one does not directly relate you to the Septims, especially when Tiber's line was destroyed with the death of his son, and his brother took over.

Yes they descend from the septims

No, there are other dragon-born, in fact, only Tiber was a real dragon-born, the others most likely not as Tibers Line was broken from the get go.

I was wondering that too. My boyfriend was playing Oblivion the other day and I heard Baurus say "We failed in our duty to the Dragonborn..." and we both looked at each other and said "DRAGONBORN!?!" Made me wonder... :P

No, Skyrim's Dargonborn is not related to the Septims. Tiber Septim/Talos was probably a real deal dragonborn, the rest of the Septim line was said to have "dragon blood" due to their ancestor and their link to the Dragonfires; Uriel Septim for example, did not have the soul of a dragon.

You are probably right, but why then do the blades refer to Martin specifically as 'dragonborn' several times?

Because he was the closest living thing to it at the time due to his blood. He didn't have the soul, though.

Souls aren't genetic. You don't have to be a Septim to have a dragon soul.

People will be playing all races, not just humans. I can't imagine how the Septims would have had an argonian child...

My guess is that the pact with Akatosh involves becoming some sort of 'blood brother' thing, allowing dragon blood to be passed to descendants.

because that was how they refered to all members of the septim line. basically if you were of the septim line you were said to have the blood of the dragon as you were desendant of talos. The dovakiin has the soul of a dragon he/she was not said to have the blood of a dragon an im just going to assume this is the difference. blood=/=soul lol

Exactly. The Empire has been linked to dragons since Allesia. Even though Akatosh was nothing but Imperial propaganda given form through faith and the schizophrenic split of Alduin/Auri-El the people of the Empire worshiped their dragons. Talos was most likely a dragonborn, with a dragon soul and all. Due to his legacy in the Empire, his descendants are referred to as dragonborn. They are not the real deal. The blades call them such because of tradition and the obscure intricacies of their order and the Imperial religion.

People make some compelling points, but if what you write about Tiber Septim is true was he also a dragonborn in the same way Dovahkiin is a dragonborn?

And was Dovahkiin actually born from a dragon, or is it also a hereditary thing (like it was for the Septims)? I might be wrong but I don't think the specifics have been revealed yet.

Dragonborn are anointed by the gods. Their power is more spiritual than anything and anyone regardless of race or gender can be chosen.

EDIT: Please read this post OP. I'm not [censored]ting you, this is fact. And for the sake of the god's, no. You are not blood related to dragons in the literal sense.

its not hard to imagine... if one of the septims got intimate with an argonian woman, boom... argonian child.

it was already confirmed that children are born the same race as the mother, with traits from the father.

example: nord father + argonian mother = argonian child.

Souls in the Elder Scrolls universe are constantly recycled, there is no heaven or hell, just the Dreamsleave and reincarnation, so the soul of a dragon could be reincarnated into the body of a man (if I understand correctly), no one was however born from a dragon, as Dragon's have baby dragons, and like its been said before souls arn't hereditary, no other Septim was likely a Dragonborn though I suppose it would be possible for one of his line to eventually be given the soul of a dragon again, but that's unlikely.

Souls work in very specific ways in TES. When you die, your soul gets transferred into something called the "dreamsleave". (Unless you get trapped in a soulgem by a necromancer, or cursed to stay on Nirn as a ghost, or wind up in Oblivion. Stuff happens) In the dreamsleave the souls wait until they are stripped of all their memories and experiences. The soul then gets recycled into a different body.

So in the case of a Dragonborn, a real Dovakhiin with a dragon soul, something intervened so that a dragon soul wound up in a mortal race. Most likely it was some sort of divine intervention, either from Aedra or Daedra.

It is not genetic. It is not hereditary. Dragonborn could be born from sickly peasants in an alley.

Edit: I got ninja'd :sadvaultboy:

The wording is in the Neverine prophecy itself, though I can't quote it from heart, but a theory popped up over the wording. I'll edit this or PM you friend if you'd like when I get time to look it up.

Well thanks a lot Lord Tidus and Steempunk for the lore info, but until we get some more info related to the Dovahkiin in Skyrim I'm gonna hope that there might be some connection with Talos/ the Septims. Clearly the title means something, if the blades were using it in regard to Martin (incorrectly or correctly).

Well theres a good possibility that the dovahkiin is realated to the Septim's since it seems to me that Uriel Septim from obivion seemed to be a bit of a womanizer and might of had another illiginament child. Yet, on the other hand, you could be a reincarnation of a Septim with a fussion of a dragonsoul since bethesda did say that the gods sent the dragonborn back to Tamriel, mainly skyrim, to fight dragons.......

Hmm, we will have to wait for the game to truly know.

Related or not, souls aren't transferable through genetics, it would have to be pure coincidence that Dragonborn of Skyrim was related to Tiber Septim, but Tiber's not known for leaving loose ends. He made Barenziah abort her child of his so there would be no illigenemnt contenders to the thrown, i'd say he was good at covering his ass. You could always rp it that was, but in the hundreds of years time between Tiber and the Dovahkiin of Skyrim I'd say chance are near impossible that they are truly related.
