I am trying not to do this main quest. I've done it before and I don't much like it.

I went to the mountain and fought the dragon and got the shout needed to free the stones.

I freed all 5 stones that I can free, but when I tested twice to sleep, I'm getting sent back to the Tree stone (temple)

I know I have done this successfully before, but for some reason now I'm getting sent back to the temple..

How to do this?

You have to go through the Temple and read the first "Black Book"..the one where Miraak speaks to you and his Seekers send you back to Solsthiem.

...Which will start the Miraak kill-stealing, which is meant to spur the completion of the DB MQ.

Is it because of Hermy's "Your free will is an illusion" thing? I tell him to fetch off on the following rationale: Mortals are not the only kind of being that "fundamentally cannot understand" something: Dragons fundamentally cannot understand mortality due to their nature; it's weaponized into a Thu'um which the Dragonborn intrinsically knows even before learning the proper Words of Power because of the confluence of dragon and mortal. I postulate that Hermy fundamentally cannot understand the nature of free will. He rationalizes his inability with "Free will is an illusion".

Just tell him to go diddle his tentacles every time he thinks he's your lord.

It does... but it stops the "transport when sleeping" thing that you describe. Once outside the Temple just go your own way,the Skaal will wait for you to show up whenever you are ready.....

I can't bring Mercurio in to help either.. Those fights are really hard for me alone..
