Dragons are BAD for the Elder Scrolls!

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:34 am

Ok bad is too strong of a word. But I do feel that they might have took a lot of resources and time to create. Therefore, a lot of features that could have been in were probably scrapped. Features that would of been so beneficial that you might even say "whats a dragon" when someone mentions it. Want examples? Maybe a climbing system to take thieves to a different level, jumping from rooftop to rooftop or climbing assassins creed style to break into someones two story house at night. Maybe they could of added a robust AI system where they react to virtually anything ie: if you complete a quest from Aragon then he may tell isildor about it without the player knowing, so isildor speaks of what you have done for aragon and wants you to do something. I mean you guys are well aware of all of your ideas, so what if they didnt make it because of dragons... Or worst what if dragons are not all what they are cracked up to be? I will end it on a good note, I'm confident that bethesda will deliver a great game, but I'm not sure if it will be the epic game we all think it will be. Tell me your thoughts!

I disagree; from a lore perspective dragons are VERY important, so I am excited to get to see them finally.

They had a separate team work on the dragons. You know that, right?

I think he means that that team may have been able to complete several more projects in the time that it took to get the dragons to where they are now.

I'd rather have dragons then a slough of smaller additions though.

I have waited a very very long time to see dragons in TES, It's finally happening and I think it's fantastic, plus I don't see how adding dragons could be taking anything away from the game when dragons are such an integral part of the main story.

This.

My thoughts . . . you haven't even played the game. You don't know what's been added or left out, except what they've clearly stated has been left out. Maybe they've added something, too.

Be careful, you might be eaten by a Dragon just tomorrow! You never know, and better not anger them.

All game developement involves choosing some features over others, however you have to balance the different aspects of the gameplay and it sounds like Bethesda is doing that. It's no fun to have an extremely interactive world if there's nothing to do in it, adding depth to the stealth/magic/and combat sounds great but it's pointless if there aren't interesting things to use them against.

Personally I've always liked the fact that dragons weren't in the Elder Scrolls, with the exception of the one in TESA: Redguard. When I heard that TES V would have dragons, and it was later clear that it would have lots of dragons, I'll admit I was skeptical. However I'm also interested to see what Bethesda has done with them and I get the feeling that saving them for a game like this will work out well.

But...have you seen the trailer? That's dynamic gameplay! That's an in-game fight with a dragon!

Honestly, I'd buy the game just for that even if it wasn't Skyrim.

And as already said, don't jump to conclusions, you haven't played the game yet! It looks like they're putting a ton of time and effort into everything else, you're just assuming dragons are stealing the show because most of the info has been about them, because the dragons are the major selling point.

Your post doesn't make sense at all. It would be a very boring game if all they did was port over the same creatures that they had in Oblivion. If I'm going to play a brand new game, I'm going to expect to be fighting brand new monsters. That's just one of those "features" that you say won't be in the game. The idea of being able to go toe to toe with a dragon, or running away in terror, sounds pretty cool to me. And from what I've seen so far, they look really good. Not to mention that designing the art, animations and behaviour of dragons wouldn't take up nearly as much time as some of the things you propose they focus on instead.

I'm fully aware of what he meant. A small group out of the close to 100 person team worked on the dragons separately. Excluding those people the team is still larger than the team that worked on Oblivion/Fallout 3.

Do you mean a separate company? Because of course they would, they have an Art design team, sound design, level design, etc. So what I'm saying is basically as soon as the company decided to go with dragons, all of the teams in different departments was effected, they may have had a separate team for dragons but ultimately every team had to work on dragons in one form or another.

Thats what I mean, dragons are such an important part of the game that the features, additions, or fixes that we might have wanted is not in the game...

When a separate, small team work on one thing that leaves 80+ people to focus on other stuff.

Huh.... That is very odd... you don't want dragons, and you want other stuff improved. What other evil antagonist be as epic as dragons? Bethesda is enhancing their game by adding dragons in. If you want to improve on other things, either make a mod or buy a mod. Problem solved and you got your way and dragons can stay in the elder scrolls. :celebration:

Although I have to say I would rather they have magic weapon effects than dragons, but then again these dragons are the best dragons any game has ever seen...grrr I guess it might be worth it

Of course not, they have their own people. Why spend extra money getting someone else to do it for them?

So what I'm saying is basically as soon as the company decided to go with dragons, all of the teams in different departments was effected, they may have had a separate team for dragons but ultimately every team had to work on dragons in one form or another.

Well that's certainly not true. About the only team that would be involved with the dragons would be the Art and Animation people, with some input from the AI team. Why would someone working on the interface, or quest design, have to stop what they were doing in order to work on dragons? They're just another creature that will populate the game. Do you think that Oblivion lost out on something just because they decided to create a Nether Lich to battle you, or Spider Daedra? Your reasoning just doesn't make any sense.
