Dragons are the new Oblivion Gates

Post » Mon Dec 27, 2010 4:18 pm

Yep. Dragons will fill the same gameplay role as Oblivion Gates did in Oblivion. You'll need to take out a few as part of the main quest, a few more as part of assorted sidequests, and the remainder will serve as random challenges that provide rewards of power once they are overcome.

Now this may or may not be a bad thing. Hopefully Beth can make a one-on-one fight with a dragon a bit more compelling than a slog through some seemingly random lava-dungeon world over and over.

So long as the fights don't end up being the same each time (unless I will it to be so) I'll be happy.

Hell, just the fact that they're dragons makes me happy. I've been waiting for a game where I'll be able to slay many of them in any number of epic ways.

I hope you are wrong, that would be extremely cheap. A fight with a dragon should be something that feels like no one else in the land can handle, hence the need for dragon hunters, otherwise, its just lame. It should be an encounter of epic proportions, where tactics and preparations make all the difference, and anyone charging ahead without planning should be crushed with ease. If they make it a mundane affair like closing an Oblivion it will be quite a disappointment.

Yea I had the same thought aswell

but as long as its not the same Dragon over and over I think it will be fine. Just make sure they stay varried and fresh.

I mean I dont know that much about the TES world, but if there's ice, fire, lightining, ect dragons that would be nice. Even Banjo Tooie had ice dragon it cant be that hard

I have heard there are 20 dragon shouts. Assuming one per dragon, that's 20 dragons. 1/3 as many, 3x harder? First couple are probably easier though, and I'm guessing around a half to be MQ related. (Others may also be related to side quests)

Hopefully you don't have to enter them and then close them in order to destroy them.

As long as they're varied and interesting fights -- y'know, like, Shadow of the Colossus, but with dragons. Oblivion gates were just random dungeons, i.e., same gameplay as any other dungeon.

I would hope each is unique, even by name, dwelling, look, and powers...and very hard to conquer....and not easily encountered.

Agree. I have a feeling this may be the case, at least for a number of them.

Well you consume their souls and gain new shouts, so each Dragon must have a different name and ability. I just hope we don't have to train to atleast 30 for truly hardcoe fights.

Hey guys, I've got a great idea! Lets be negative about every possible thing that makes this game, because of the mounds of information that had been given to us by a couple pictures and descriptions.

Better idea: stop basing irrational and negative hypotheses off of your irrational fears about this new game. Don't you think they haven't heard you all whine about this the first time?

Why are you so eager to jump on people just because they choose to post their opinions? Its a forum, that's why everyone is here.

there is just to much UNINFORMED opinions running around here really. but opinions none the less.

The Dragons aren't Stationary, and you can Happen upon one or it upon you at almost any given time into the story, from what i've read its not scripted or rather static. so different dragons would show up in different area's as well as being able to ravage towns.

as it looks, by no means will Dragons be the chore that was Oblivion gates thats for sure, you -have- to take them down or risk some consequence it seems.

i wouldn't mind it if they handled the dragons like they did in gothic 2 very hard but very rewarding.

just because it's an opinion, doesn't mean it's good. Usually I don't care if they rant about the game after enough information has been put out; but ranting off baseless conjectures because of a few pictures and text is just a little too much. I really don't know how some of you pull these irrational hypotheses out of your butts. Do you guys seriously think that Bethesda is that stupid?

I'm pretty sure they are basing their opinions off of the previous bethesda games they've played.

I think you need 3 "dragon signs" to make a shout and you get one "sign" per dragon killed. So you will have to kill at least 60 dragons to get all 20, though you probably get some signs from other sources books/tablets etc. At least thats how I read the info. Epic

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure that it doesn't take an IQ of 150 to figure out that Bethesda (or any company that listens to their customers for that matter) is not stupid enough to do the same mistake twice. I know people around here are smart enough to figure this out. ;)

In no way am I declaring that this is a mistake. As many people have said already, this could be a really cool experience if each fight is challenging and varied, exactly what the Oblivion gates were lacking.

I've simply got a feeling that the dragons and Oblivion Gates will fill very similar roles in the design of these two games.
