Dragons: cliche or novel?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 6:29 am

1. Bethesda are very good at taking on old fantasy ideas and making them their own; making them interesting. Hell, Bethesda had Warcraft Orcs before Warcraft did! I'm entirely confident that Bethesda will set their dragons apart from those that are seen in every other fantasy text. I mean, just look at the lore for Dragons. They already have, if you ask me.

2. Dragons are awesome. Even if they're cliched, dragons are just a metric [censored] tonne of awesome. So it doesn't matter anyway.

Seems to me that dragons are a staple of fantasy literature and role plying games, much the same as dwarves and elves, swords and sorcery, or goblins and orcs. They can't be considered cleche since they form the basis of the genre.

Most definitely. People get too uptight about things having to be original. You'll often find that original ideas end up svcking. there's a reason cliches become cliches. It's because they worked.

When your dragons are Jills who run around and sew and patch together Time when it slips out of linearity yet again, you've successfully set them apart from most dragons.

Cliche? Yes. But I like the ways Bethesda makes their dragons unique, so I'm fine with it.
