Dragons defying physics?

Unless its scripted, it will not look perfect all the time, that is fact for the way things are atm.

A humming bird moves from side to side like it glides because you can't see there wings flap because its so fast.

The presence of magic does not automatically excuse things running counter to expectation. Verisimilitude demands that things function like reality except where otherwise stated, e.g. shooting fire from your hands. For other things, simple physics shouldn't be skippede over for the sake of excusing flawed animation.

I agree good sir, your logic is flawless. :trophy:

This game will be the end of my social life :( i donno if i should be sad or happy... which makes me sad :'(

Good luck with that :poke:

uhhhhmmmm, perhaps not many people know this but hawks/eagles/even vultures don't flap their wings to fly. They flap in order to gain height/speed. For the most part- predatory birds glide.

So, if we have to bring realistic thinking to a fictional game about fictional creatures-they're predatory creatures that are gliding.

With all that said, why complain- you're gonna buy the game either way.

Dragons aren't really natural animals though. I mean are they even really native to the game world? I had heard they were supposed to have more in common with demi-gods or angels than with animals.

Thu'um is the Breath of Kyne, the wind goddess. Dragons speak Thu'um. They are divine spirits of wind clothed in a veneer of flesh and scales. The wings are just for show, in the same way that their corporeal forms are just for show. Cut off their wings and they will not fly, but they do not fly with their wings.

Dragons, unrealistic? No way!

I hear dragons fly with magic and not the air since their wings are too small to support the weight.

Why do they have wings if they need magic to fly? Seriously how does that make any sense? They should either have huge wings or none and just use magic.

So... a wingless flying dragon makes more sense than a winged flying dragon then? I see what you mean, but it seems wierd.

Yeah, if they use magic to fly why do they have wings? What purpose do they serve besides making them look cool?

Maybe it allows them to glide

Maybe dragon-chiks nail dragon-wings so poor wingless dragons dont reproduce.

Maybe they use it for combat, as antlers for moose.

Maybe it helps them warm faster.

I could carry on forever... but we both know the real answer is "it makes them look cool"

I haven't watched the video as my connection is terribly slow at the moment but is it possible that Dragons do use their wings to fly and that Bethesda made a simple mistake causing it to appear that Dragons could propel themselves through the air without their wings? I see that as being the simplest explananion. However as I have said I have not seen this video and am basing my thoughts on descriptions so if I am wrong about something then I apologize in advance.

bees defy the laws of nature as well

but they still fly although they shouldn't

They don't defy the laws of nature. If nature didn't allow them to fly, they wouldn't. Bees have a very unique way of moving their wings in a circular/figure eight motion that gives them lift. This is completely within the laws of nature.

I have noticed a few hiccups with the dragon animations as well. They are definitely flying rather slow and banking far too often to account for how much they don't flap their wings to create more lift. I started a thread about this issue (and many other animation-related issues) a while back. But, I'll say it again, Bethesda is not known for their superior animations and mechanics.

while i was watching i noticed something really disgusting about how dragons fly, they sometimes don't flap their wings but that's nothing to complain about , check the video at 4:45 when the frost dragon drifts to the left.
Its highly unrealistic how its body just goes to the left without drifting, it just suddenly become left :S you guys will notice it.

Wow, you're very critical. I had to view it a few times to see what you're talking about. Anyway, I wasn't bothered by it.

Most of you people are clearly clueless in relation to how Beth games handle Animations and Turning.

1) In beth games the Animations DO NOT control turning in any way its 100% visual all they control are the skeletal movements.

2) Turning is a combination of a base GameSetting and a Creature Setting called Turning Speed (Morrowind did not have this setting).

3) Non of the games in question even had movement based turning animations and if a actor was moving while turning it just played the animation for the movement direction and the engine rotated the actor.

4) this time around it seems like they are doing it identically except they have added the sequences of WalkTurnLeft/Right and FastTurnLeft/Right to facilitate the need to see an actual animation while moving and turning.

5) which in turn means that they do not need to re-do any animations people would just have to open the master in the CK and alter this one setting -> at the expense of turning dragons into a joke to fight because they turn so slowly you can pick them out of the air before they get around back to you..... I prefer my Dragons to be difficult.

6) In conclusion I would actually like Dragons to employ a Swimmers turn like just a quick flip and they are on your A$$ again. <- and if this does not make release I will most likely mod it in myself through Special Idles and a small bit of scripting.

"Moraelyn asked with a smile, 'All right then, I've always wanted to know this - considering the shape of your mouth and teeth, how do dragons manage to speak the humanoid languages so clearly?'
Akatosh paused, and then carefully responded, 'Why, in much the same way that we can fly, even though our wings are not naturally strong enough to support such heavy torsos.'"

Tells you all you need to know ;)

Hm ... the flight maneuver the OP refers to does indeed look silly but I think that is more a question of bad animating than one of misunderstood physics just like this is the case with the stupid ragdoll behavior of the falling giant in the same video.

They fly with magic. They have wings because they fly. It makes sense in a fantasy world. You look like what you are.

It's not defying physics...

It's actually right... The dragon is flying in such speed, that it doesn't require wings flapping all the time...

Wings flapping is just to keep height...

The only wrong thing is @ 3:20, the dragon just stops in midair... That's impossible...
But that's very easy to correct... It's about timming in animations...

It's changing animations...
From grabing the guy, to flying...
They are not the same animation...
That's why there is that thing @ 3:20

Yes, 4:45 was another exemple of it... different thing, but it's the same problem: animations... But I think this one can be corrected without going into animations...

Beth is not famous for realistic animations people...
