Dragons defying physics?

Post » Tue Aug 23, 2011 1:05 pm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9MBqdME14I&feature=player_embedded this is a link some guy posted awhile ago for a 5 and a half min demo gameplay (nothing new) its just without commentary

while i was watching i noticed something really disgusting about how dragons fly, they sometimes don't flap their wings but that's nothing to complain about , check the video at 4:45 when the frost dragon drifts to the left.
Its highly unrealistic how its body just goes to the left without drifting, it just suddenly become left :S you guys will notice it.

edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9MBqdME14I&feature=player_embedded that link isnt workin, my bad check 4:45 ull understand

Dragons, unrealistic? No way!

I hear dragons fly with magic and not the air since their wings are too small to support the weight.

This. Mythical flying beast that breathe fire do not have to follow the laws of physic here on earth.

Your links are mal-formed, (and do not link to the video).

Most airplanes don't flap their wings either (even when slowing down). A dragon could surely glide, and could likely rise as well ( sometimes without flapping their wings ~updrafts);

*** Ok wait a minute (technically airplanes do "flap" the wings  when slowing down ).

I read somewhere that the dragons in TES use magic to help them fly and talk, meh.

I dont care if they flap or not, in the vid they were flying, going straight, then out of nowhere they suddenly become left, they didnt go straight drift left , the went directly to left!!!!!

And thats why when you damage their wings they fall ;), you damage their wings, which they dont fly with and they fly, god dammit man use your logic!

I can't see it ~the link doesn't work....

I would say (not seeing it myself yet...) that for a creature that big, just turning their head & neck might give enough surface to cause them to turn, and that's not counting minor deforming of their wing tips to glide to the left or right.

**I don't doubt things move oddly in the game though, I've seen plenty of it.

The only thing I've noticed odd about the dragons flight was when it dropped the Giant it kinda pauses in mid air.
And Im pretty sure a huge winged fire breathing lizard is already physically impossible.

It's honestly not that bad in my opinion....... We can't expect complete perfection, and the dragon had to execute some sort of quick maneuver....

The Dragons do not fly like a bird flies, they use magic to fly, I assume that their wings help stabilise them.

That may be the case, but the beasts turn uncannily fast for a creature of that size. The turning circle should be at least double the current value to be more realistic imo.

That looked a bit (to me) like the giant was flung away from the viewer... and so would shrink slightly, rather than arc (for a time).

I was thinking of the same thing though, when I mention oddly moving objects in the game.

That was just an unfortunate case of ragdoll. If you've ever played Halo you've probably seen it a thousand times.

TES physics are a joke to begin with. from the huge ass warhammers that noone could lift to everythign floating upwards when you move an object to running like a deer and never tiring, to jumping over people to objects floating in water when they should sink etc.

i really hope they improved the physics form oblivion. i actually preferred morrowinds system as sad as that was because i could place objects on a shelf or table and not have to worry about them knocking everything in the vicinity over.

*sigh* No, no they don't. I'm beginning to think everyone on these forums failed biology. The whole "bees shouldn't be able to fly" thing is a myth. That got started when someone (stupidly) tried to apply fixed wing aerodynamics to bees, who don't fly with fixed wings. No animal flies with fixed wings. That branch of aerodynamics is for AIRPLANES, not animals.
