Dragons don't reproduce.

Post » Wed Oct 02, 2013 6:10 pm

Guise, back me up on this. Dragons don't reproduce.

I met this guy, who's honestly trying to tell me that there is a limitless amount of dragons because he sees them in game "even at level 81" and they "probably lay eggs somewhere," and yet I'm the one whose point isn't supported by lore.

Now we all know this. But I'm having trouble finding anything on the topic of dragon reproduction (wonder why...?)

Lend me a virtual hand? For old times sake?

I've never actually read that book. Tiber Septim absorbed their essence in his rise to god hood? *laughs* dudes, that was Martin..

The fact that Dragons like perching at the highest points, and at one time would destroy one another for a perch, just like a RL Raptor points to being denied Females to mate with by their Father. Akatosh had a unique way of preventing His "offspring" from becoming Mortal, He banished the Females from Convention and caused them to become obsessed with mending Time. The Males were stuck on Nirn, but would not be reduced through reproduction.

No, Martin transformed into the avatar of Akatosh. Tiber Septim had risen to godhood long before the events of Oblivion.

My point is that Martin became Akatosh by absorbing the souls of the Dragonborn emperors. I.e. he rose to godhood in the way the book speculates about Tiber Septim. I'm aware what they are trying to say. However we know that Tiber Septim/Wulfharth/Arctus rose to godhood together through an enantiomorphic mantle.

Both scenarios seem relatable to the Last Dragonborn as well...

I'm not completely sold on this. I think that it very well may be possible for Dragons to reproduce. Or at the very least, are not limited. Here are my thoughts:

The book linked is written by Torhal Bjorik. What is known of this author? He appears to be a scholar & probably one of the most knowledgeable sources on Dragons & their origins. He has written 3 books on the subject of Dragons. In all of this books he is referring in past tense. Piecing together what credible evidence & accounts he could find on the subject from history. He admits that there is no credible story of how Dragons came to be. Is it possible that it is because no one has ever been able to locate a "lair" in which dragons were produced?

Take Skuldafn, The Forgotten Vale, Aetherium Forge etc for example. Remote areas that are largely inaccessible that haven't been seen in thousands of years by anyone. Is it not possible that Dragons "may" have bred in this remote unreachable areas? Its unknown.

Perhaps they do not breed in the manner in which we normally associate with breeding. What if Dragons enter the world via Akatosh/ a portal or some other method? Stranger things have happened. Take the Soul Cairne, or Soverngarde, or Hircene's Hunting Grounds for example. Otherworldly places of mystery. If Alduin can enter Soverngarde, whos to say other Dragons can not travel between other planes of existence?

We have zero reason to believe dragons breed though. Apparently there are female dragons called jills.. but they are more mythical in that they only appear to mend time. Aside from the jills.. all dragons are "genderless" but take on a male persona.

Your correct. Right now there is no evidence to support the act of Dragon's breeding, but it very well could be possible. There are numerous places all over Tamriel that are isolated from the world & may have never been discovered. Its possible that these locations could house such a Jills you describe.

While a completely different subject, take Crimson nirnroot for example. Up until recently, all of Tamriel believed the plant required sunlight to survive. Had it not been for Sinderion's critical research & the Dragonborn's involvement that it was discovered that it can actually thrive miles underground within Blackreach. I feel Torhal's research was limited in that he did not live in the time of Dragons & all of his data had to be based off past events & accountings.

While I'll agree with you that Bethesda could definitely retcon everything they have said.. I don't see a point in doing that. That dragons are and always have been since the beginning of creation is a fundamental principle to the divine nature of the beasts within this universe.

Dragons came to be like the lesser dremora, the atronarchs, and dwemer automatons. They are created through magic, not born. They are genderless and do not reproduce.

They also seem to be all males. This could explain why they are so violent and angry.

But what if male Dragons mate with each other for fun? Maybe they screw each other to show dominance? Maybe they even have orgies!!!

These questions need answers.

Molag Grunda may disagree. Nomeg Gwai may also take offense to being referred to as Genderless, if He has had a chance to get free of Molag Bal.
