Do Dragons exist in ES?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:59 am

I don't know much about the world in Elder Scrolls. Is there a reason there are no large enemies such as dragons? I would love to see someone do that really well. Make it a rare occurrence, but do some creative game play mechanics to make it interesting. Not unlike the mutant behemoth in Fallout 3. There was only a handful of those guys, but running into one was always an epic encounter. There may be a good reason dragons aren't around in ES,... was just curious though.

Yes - they do exist.
No - they are not dumb murderous wild beasts, they are in fact intelligent creatures, able to shapeshift from what we know and they are ALLIES of the empire.

They are also relatively few in number.

There have been, at least. Akavir and Vvardenfell housed populations of those intelligent reptiles, but vampire snakes and cliffracers drove them off to nobody knows where.

From some lore it was said they reside in the mountains of the colovian highlands, hammerfell and highrock.

Well any given species is going to have good and bad. It would be cool to fight along side a dragon, but it would also be fun to fight an evil one as well.

I don't think that really counts because he was just a manifestation of a deity with an avatar that happens to resemble a gold dragon.

Yea but it won't be "dragon sees you, dragon attacks you", you'd really have to give it a reason for that. To them you'd most likely be just a "meh, whatever" most of the time, why should such a creature even take note of you if you're note a immediate threat or a sufficient bite to eat in any way?

And really I HOPE they won't go the good and evil way in any case. Personality based at max and if then have REASONS for it.

I'm hoping we finally see a dragon in TES:V. Not kill it, of coarse, that's unnecessary. I don't scream, "KILL IT!!" the first time I see a new species that's magnificent and intelligent. This is Tamriel, not America. I'd just at least like to watch it fly over me. I bet they're huge.

The original dragons are believed to be extinct. Some deitys have been inspired by dragons and have chosen to take the form of a dragon, but they are not actually part of the species.

Some believe they are extinct, but there's no proof saying that all Dragons are gone. There's a good chance that there are at least a few roaming the skies somewhere. Probably not in any around Cyrodill, but other provinces that we haven't visited yet.

UESP.net is the best site for info and Lore in TES!

It is really good for info on TES games and help in quests, but I personally think that the Imperial Library is a better place to go to find lore, as it can be a bit more accurate. The few people who are allowed to edit and submit stuff there really know their [censored] more than most people.

It's not uncommon in modern fantasy to paint dragons as intelligent, nor is it particularly uncommon for them to be misunderstood good-aligned beings, or have good and evil factions (such as with the Dragonlance series of books), though some modern fantasy does paint them as evil-aligned intelligent beings, such as the Landover series of books (wherein there's only one dragon left). Shapeshifting is common too, and aside from the Elder Scrolls series it's a trait of dragons from the Warcraft series as well, though I don't know if it's in the games, but it's in several of the books.

In the Elder Scrolls, it's also said that the Cliff Racers drove the dragons out of Morrowind.

TES dragons don't shapeshift, there isn't any lore supporting that. We saw a living dragon in Redguard, who the devs decided you should kill as a boss fight. There was a dead dragon in Battlespire that was ridden by a battlemage, and there were dragonlings all over in the game Daggerfall.

In the Elder Scrolls, it's also said that the Cliff Racers drove the dragons out of Morrowind.
That was a response from the devs when people were asking why there weren't dragons in Morrowind. It's cute, but it doesn't hold water.

Hence why I mentioned them having interesting game play mechanics to support it. If there were a particular few that were being manipulated for whatever prominent evil threat was being faced at the time. If they were in their Lair and you went in to stop them. Having them just around the world randomly would be difficult. Something that large would need to be a carefully designed set piece. You people (particularly the ones who sound like the PETA of Tamriel) wouldn't think it would be cool if ES included a large set piece battle like that in the game? If done very well? Seriously?

Yah because in Tamriel the folks in charge like to either svck blood or torture people. And joining killing groups that meet in red underground pulsating dungeons is A OK.

Well, there is a dragon called Tosh Raka. He was a Ka Po' Tun before, but he turned into a dragon.

And there's a few other dragons too, somewhere in Tamriel, I think. Dragons are very rare in Tamriel and Akavir.

Probably because it's quite taxing on the game, and a challenge for the devs. Also, it helps to differentiate TES from the countless dragon-infested Tolkienesque fantasy settings.

In-universe, and somewhat less cynically, I believe they exist, but are few in number and do not wish to be troubled my mortals or their affairs.

[censored] those cliffracers! I didn't think it was possible to hate them anymore, but here I am hating them even more...

Interesting. I'm surprised they didn't shoe-horn one into Oblivion since they were going for a more traditional fantasy setting with that game. A dragon would have really appealed to the masses. I think I'm glad they didn't. I was upset enough to find the most powerful foe in the game (the Uderfrykte Matron) was just a troll model made invisible. What a cop-out!

"Hey guys, we need a model for this awesome monster that lurks in the freezing mountain wilderness. It needs to be epic!"

"Really? I'm not sure I can be bothered. Just use a current model, make it invisible so no-one can tell what it is and they have to use their imagination, and just write the invisible part into the monster's lore. That's a lot easier for us."

Well, the Uderfrykte was a troll. So, shouldn't it's mother be a troll?
