dragons having a specific weak spot?(read Post first)

Post » Sun Jun 13, 2010 1:13 pm

well i was just wondering how people felt about this?

it came about because i was thinking of smaug from the hobbit and how his whole underbelly was encrusted with diamonds except for one weak spot and thats how he was killed. Im not saying are those the only places it can be injured, but are they points where it is particularly susceptible to damage.

well traditionally the weakspot on dragons, just like most RL reptiles, is the belly, obvious other points would be joints on the leg.

but I doubt we see anything deeper then hitting belly= higher damage, rest of the body= less damage

you would have to go to quicktime killing scenes ala God of War to see anything deeper.

you forgot the neck is that not how beowulf did it? besides a good slice to the throat kills most things if you can penetrate it scales that is.

then again that dragon was a demon/human spawn and breathed fire and i think its heart was in its throat too

Afraid this brings up memories of interminable boss battles in all those weird JRPGs my kids like to play.
Stuff like this works great in Fallout, because of the VATS and the one-piece armour, but TES has done alright without hit locations so far, and if you had them for the dragons there might be interminable complaints about why all the NPCs didn't have them.

I would personally say inside the mouth (voted for head) as it poses a considerable risk/reward factor.
The way I see it, the only time you're likley to see in there, is when;
A: The dragon's going to bite your face off.
or
B: The dragons going to cook your face off.

So you're left with two options.
A: Move out of the damn way, taking heed of basic survival instincts.
Or
B: Stand your ground (Blissfully ignoring basic survival instincts) to plant an arrow in there.
Logically, it's the only part of the dragon without scales, so the least armored, and right behind it would be it's brain... I suppose. I'm not up to date on the anatomy of mythical creatures, but I suppose thats where its gonna be?

Maybe make that second question a one-answer option? I guess people might want to vote for several spots, but just to make the differences larger.

Anyway, all "bosses" need weak spots, otherwise it'd be boring just slashing. The head is an obvious weak spot that makes a lot of sense. Plus, it's the most dangerous part of the dragon, so it's a good choice IMO. No risk no gain.

Chest (or briasts as you express it) and stomach should be weak spots.

I can go either way on question one, but if they are there I don't want all dragons to have the same weak spot. Then it would be a simple matter of:

"OH NOES A DRAGON"
*arrow to soft underbelly*
"Oh yay mah lootz"

you should put the belly as one of the possible weakspots on the poll tough skinned creatures usually have a soft underbelly

I would like to see dragons having a few different weak spots, and use different strategies against them, rather than just http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DamageSpongeBoss?from=Main.HitItUntilItDies. But not to the point of the stupid final boss fight in Two Worlds II.

Will there be one? There is no confirmed information on dragon weak spot so we can't say.
Would you like for there to be weak spots? Yes I would. But as long as you figure it out and http://www.thewebtechreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/lostplanet_2.jpg

My guess is that we will have to bring the dragon down in one way or another with general damage, and then once it is down there will be a window where we can attack a weak spot (head, neck, chest) for the kill.

The Underside of a dragon I thought was supposed to be unscaled adn that is why they sit on jewels and treasures.

Won't the crown and sword puncture the delicate belly?

Oh, I can think of at least one http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/PopArte/foto/0,,10921673-EX,00.jpg they might have. Glaurung Alduin is doomed.

Well in Redguard, the spot to hit the dragon was in the stomach. I'm thinking that the Dragon Shout will force them onto the ground or something.

I'd rather them not have a "weak" point, more like an area thats less protected, i do not want to feel like i have to attack their soft spots to make them feel anything, then you will have crawmerax from borderlands.

Over the course of the article they tell of a radiant story(?) quest they saw which involves a thief who stole some artifact from a shop, and it leads to fighting a dragon.

From the Game Informer Skyrim cover story:
"[...] The dragon has been circling. And now he renews his assault. A furious melee ensues. His claws tear at you, His fiery breath singes. You shout a word of power, and the dragon seems to slow momentarily as time shifts around you. You dive to the side and stab your blade up into the creatures neck, It flails wildly, and finally collapses. Instantly, it's body begins to combust burning itself out from the inside. Your blood quickens. And a glow of power suffuses you. Another soul brings you one step closer to Alduin."

So... According to what they saw, though, they could have exaggerated or it was scripted to be as so for the awesome factor. It seems Dragons do have a weak spot, being their neck.

Or.. that specific dragons weak spot was his neck, and he sound more like dragon fodder than an actual dragon you fight, even though he did give the PC a dragon soul.

I *hope* no dragon will be just "fodder." Like I said they may have exaggerated. I can describe the combat of Morrowind to sound as epic as that but that's not how it really is.

The way they tell it like your reading a story makes me lean on the exaggerate side of the fence. Saying "You hack at the dragon for 5 minutes until finally executing a finisher, thrusting your sword into it's neck" doesn't sound as cool. :P
