Dragons... or Keenly disguised Cliff Racers?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 1:32 pm

Does anyone think dragons might become a nuisance like the fabled cliff racers from Morrowind? I think it is a possibility that they can become irritating, especially that they can attack cities. Don't get me wrong, I don't want dragons, or anything they are doing with dragons changed, I just want to know everyone's opinions. Here is the real question:

Do you believe dragons are going to become a nuisance, or in maybe even so common that they are just another "creature" to kill?

My stance is that the first few dragons will be ridiculously awesome, and breathtaking, but once you get going and want to just do a quest, and one comes along, you might just discard it and say, eff you, I am gonna ignore you and walk past you. Not that you don't want to fight them, just that you have done it before, and that it takes a long time to do.

Ideas, comments, questions....?

Nope, because in an article, Todd mentions that dragons won't attack you unless you touch them first. MOST of the time.

They said the cliffracers drove the dragons away, but really the dragons just got skinnier.

We are on to something...
Dragons are cliff racers!!

Well, we just ruined the secret of the game. Thanks a lot. The only way it could be better is if St. Juib returns...

And back on topic, I think they will be more like Oblivion gates. Cool at first, annoying later, you get stuff but eventually its useless, and you just start avoiding them whenever you can. So its slightly more awesome than cliff racers, I doubt there will be that many of them...

At least not until the main character has a band of loyal companions, and a giant battle ensues between a gaggle of dragons vs. you and your crew! That would be Epic childhood fantasy re-visited!!! Oh, and it also takes place on a snow covered outcropping with a sheer cliff that drops into a volcanic crevasse!

I doubt dragons will be as ubiquitous as cliff racers. I mean, those things were everywhere. You couldn't travel on foot from one city to another without fighting like a dozen cliff racers and a half dozen of those worm things (kwama somethings?)

I have a feeling they are scripted as certain parts of the main quest. If you don't even start the main quest right away I doubt they will be a problem. Even after starting the MQ there are probably only a handful (whatever you need for dragon shouts and maybe a city or two being attacked).

I'm just associating the number of dragons with the number of dragon shouts

So roughly 60 dragons all up.... Each probably has its own territory in skyrim

Yeah they are going to be scripted into some of the main quest I think, but essentially I don't think they will be annoyingly everywhere. I just wonder if there is a limit to the amount of dragons living in the world. I imagine there will be a respawning amount and limited to how many can roam at one time.

Cliff Racers were annoying because they were weak creatures that distracted you, and they were everywhere in fairly large numbers. Dragons are none of that.

Oblivion gates were annoying as it took quite a long time to get through them and often involved fighting weak lower level enemies and often involved a lot of maze like dungeon crawling that was almost identical to every other oblivion gate,

with dragons I think the fight should be much quicker and would be quite challenging in a way that gates were never really that challenging. Also i hope that dragon fights will vary with different dragons having different fighting styles and tactics. eg. one loves to land and charge you, other prefers to swoop down and breathe fire, another likes to attack like an eagle (strafing you with its claws), another may just choose to flee to its cave forcing you to chase or confront it later. etc

I want them to behave exactly like cliffracers lol. You're just trying to get to town and there's five dragons humping the back of your head making that "whiff!" sound when they miss.

I don't think dragons will become like cliffracers, because what made cliffracers so annoying was the combination of two factors, they were extremely common, and they were weak, thus, fighting thwm did not offer any challenge, and was therefore tedious rather than fun, and you could not really avoid them, therefore, you just had to deal with them, and they'd attack you regularly. Had cliffracers been much less common, I'm sure people wouldn't hate them as much as they do. Dragons, however, will likely be much less common, not to mention more powerful, further more, it's been said that they don't always attack on sight, so you can fight them when you want to, rather than every few steps. From this, I'd assume that attacking cities will also not really be something they're doing constantly, they CAN attack them, but you won't find that as soon as you leave a city for a short time, there will be a dragon attacking it.

If dragons to end up becoming annoying, it will be more the Oblivion gate kind of annoying, which is to say, repetitive and taking a very long time to finish off, but hopefully Bethesda will have learned from the criticisms of Oblivion gates, and will do a better job at keeping dragon fights entertaining.

Three words make a complete dragon shout. So, a rough estimate would put the number of dragons at 60.

A team of developers been working on the dragons for two years. I don't expect them to be anything like cliffracers. Besides, if the dragons are as dynamic as the Bethesda stated, each battle would be quite exciting.

so 1 dragon kill earns you 1 word? i dont think it works that way . . . i think you need 1 dragon soul for the complete shout and you learn the 3 words needed for 1 shout by discovering the inscriptions on the walls

and i think some words will be used for more than 1 shout

did you listen to any interview or read any official info on dragons? any small piece of information would contradict the op's question. (yes i'm flaming you this is a stupid topic) :flamethrower:
However the return of the cliffracers DLC would be so popular right? right? ;) (i would like to see them return tho)

That would make it an extermination game and I personally hope the dragons have more depth than to be "gotta kill 'em all" targets.
