Dragons In Skyrim?!

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:05 pm

We've all seen the incredible diorama that was created for the ESV: Skyrim announcement trailer, and there are multiple dragons depicted upon the carved stone's surface... How likely do you think it is that there will be fight-able or fly-able dragons in the Elder Scrolls universe? I think the idea would be intensely awesome, but it couldn't get out of hand; i.e. too many dragons and such.

Hell I'm very excited to see a game made for Skyrim--Nords have always been my favorite race. They're alot like the Anglo-Saxons and even their mythology is incredibly interesting. I'm quite rusty on how Nords see Dragons and all, and I believe the good dragon-god is Akatosh, however these seem to be bad dragons so I'm not sure who or what they are exactly within the confines of Nordic mythos.

Anyway, who wants to see dragons, and who thinks its a good/bad idea and why? Feel free to leave any comments associated with ESV and dragons.

I don't know, I never really missed having dragons in TES games. Lots of other fantasy games already have them, TES was doing fine without them as a fightable monster.

If that's even the case in Skyrim. We'll see. Even if they are, I doubt they'll be all over the place. :P

I'll be disappointed if there aren't dragons, though I can think of several (equally satisfactory) ways they could be included; say, smaller/lesser dragons and dragon-like creatures as "normal" enemies, and then a few huge/powerful dragons serving as bosses and/or antagonists. I'd love it if there were certain powerful dragons with lairs and territory dotted around the game region, which could be encountered either as part of the main quest or simply through exploring... but not levelled, meaning that low-level characters who wandered into dragons' lairs would probably be toast.

I'd also love for any significant dragon enemies/antagonists to have personalities reflected in their combat prowess, location, interactions with the player character, etc.

I'm far from a TES lore expert, though, so I don't know how much of what I'm hoping for fits with the setting. But yeah, I really hope there are actual dragons in the game.

I just hope these dragons aren't generic ones you see in other fantasy games.

I hope they are there, and I hope for the sake of Ysmir they don't have Iron Armor early and Daedric Armor late in the game

Fight-able, that does seem likely, after the trailer. Fly-able... Naah. Not that I would care to, never got any use out of the damn Cyrodiil horses. Bugger when you get attacked, truly.

I'm completely fine with it as long as they keep to the lore and dragons remain intelligent creatures and not just another enemy to kill.

I wonder who they'd have to voice a dragon

The question is: why on earth would there be dragons in Skyrim and not in any other place so far. I think it has something to do with these "they" that came. the return of "they" brings dragons with them. Possibly.

But I really do want to fight a lying enemy, like gigantic Hawks or vultures. Then the next step into epicness would be flying dragons, small in size.

But think about how epic this would be:
You are climbing up a mountain and the world around you is getting ready for the night. Suddenly a bone ashening roar is heard and a great shadow flies over you, leaving everything around you in shadow for a split-second. Would you continue climbing? ;)

I'd bet my two cents that dragon will be the End Game Monster Enemy, that you should slaughter to save the empire?

(But I wouldn't wan't to :( )

It reminds me of the upcoming Guild Wars 2 game (release date unannounced) that has five dragons rising up to cause major geographic and political changes in the world of Tyria. But I guess dragons are a common enough trope in fantasy that it's unsurprising "Skyrim" will feature them. I also wonder how this will compare to those in "Dragon Age".

As long as they're handled with the reverence they deserve, and not just another beastie, then I'm looking forward to it.

I'm more worried that it might end up something like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reign_of_Fire_%28film%29. not a very good film BTW

reminds me of cliffracers lol. I guess there is a reason the cliffracers drove the dragons from morrowind. who knows maybe the cliffraces might come to the rescue this time lol.

well we know that the Akavir will be there, and they are the ones that have dragons, so it is quite possible, plus after that trailer it is gonna be a huge let down if there isn't

I'm thinking Akaviri. I could be very wrong. But it seems a civil war in Skyrim would be the perfect time to attack.

According to Lore whilst dragons are orginally from Akavir, they are extinct there so I think akavir will not be a major part of the storyline. Tamriellic dragons however, were driven away, almost to extinction by some Nordic hero. So I conclude that the tamriellic dragons have returned and are a bit pissed at skyrim for nearly killing them all and are
out for revenge, thus the scenes in the teaser

Exactly. :P

Or perhaps Saint Jiub drove the cliff racers out of Morrowind, into Skyrim, and now dragons seek revenge on the cliff racers, facing off in an epic battle for control over the sky! Especially since there are no more levitating wizards around.
