Dragons - A thread to discuss all things about Skyrim's Drag

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:17 pm

I'm glad they look like the Dragons from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg7bjwEXp7Y and not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxjSHwknH8U. :celebration:

Amen to that!

It was stated that the developers had it to where your character couldn't just simply walk backwards and spam a enemy NPC with attacks. I think that not being able to walk backwards really fast (not that I did that mind you) would make the dodging mechanic more of a need while fighting a dragon. Does anyone know if they will give us the ability to dodge right from the start? I would think that fighting a dragon without being able to dodge would make it unnecessarily frustrating. I think that you had to be level 50 in acrobatics to be able to roll around in oblivion

If not from the outset I hope it's amongst the first tier of perks you can choose from or something. I know I'de like to have that ability asap, and not just for fighting dragons.
This is an awesome thread thanks.

Thanks :)

i just want the possiblity of taking on a dragon with my Bare Hands. I mean it. I want to go up to a dragon and punchit repetedly untill it dies. I wonder if it is possible, though it would of course be really tough.

And yes, this is an awesome thread. I reckon that since the VERY short time I have been here it's the best i've seen. :goodjob:

I am really curious on how we would fight the dragon? The Developer said that it would be hard but what would make the dragon hard to fight? I hope it is not a cheap frustration thing :brokencomputer:

lol i don't know how that would work out but I guess why handcuff the gamer, if you don't choose anything for your weapons then have at it, punch away. May Kyne's grace bless you though. ;)

Holy Crap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSRtYpNRoN0 was epic! I see there's already a handful of threads about the Dragons popping up but remember you can discuss anything and everything here, in the original thread rather then making another one.

well from what I have seen from the trailer that was released today, the dragon will fly into the sky to get the upper hand on you in battle. This would make dodging a need for these type of fights or you will be blocking a whole lot and that is not a option for some of these gamers that don't want get outside the box and not use a shield of some kind.

I'm sure the dragonshouts as well will play a key role into fighting dragons. After all it's their own attacks your using against them.

Yep, It was confirmed to be all in-game animations. Although it was not really scripted they probably did plenty of takes to get it to look and happen the way they wanted it to for the trailer. I'm glad the fights with dragons are taken to a different level, a little more cinematic in nature but to be honest all the creatures and confrontations in the trailer looked really good. Aside from the dragon battle what stuck out most to me in the trailer was the scene with the wolf and the archer. The realism in the wolf was just amazing to me. I had to go back and watch that over and over again because I couldn't believe how good it looked. Also the Spider, the troll, the lumbering giant, the normal human vs human fight. All of them looks good. The combat is looking really impressive in the game from this first glimpse IMO.

In an attempt to bring some discussion to this thread I've redone the polls. (Old Poll Results in Spoiler Below)

I'de love to hear from everybody on a few things about what we've seen in the recent trailer. Don't be shy, post away...

  • What does everybody think about the combat against dragons that we saw in the trailer?

  • What does everybody think about the looks of the dragon(s) in the trailer?

  • What does everybody think about the animations of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Them flying, banking, and crashing to the ground, attacking with fire and butting head to shield?

  • What does everybody think is the best way going about defeating a dragon? Which will you use? Melee, Magic, Archery and do you think all will be possible?

  • What does everybody think about the Dragonshouts and especially the one we saw in the trailer? "Fus, Ro, Dah!” Translated into English, “Fus” means force, “Ro” means balance, and “Dah” means push.

  • What does everybody think about the absorbing of the dragon souls? Do you like how that looks in game so far?

  • What does everyone think about the scale in size of dragons compared to the player? They are definitely quite a bit larger in size.

  • What does everybody think about the sounds of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Especially at the moment where it did the fire attack?

  • How do you think the end of the story will go down, defeat and kill Alduin or just banish him?

  • Is there anything in the trailers that you didn't see regarding dragons that you would have liked to?

I've seen a few new threads created with simple questions and would just like to remind people the original intent for this thread was not just to compile all the info but to have a thread, as the title says, "A thread to discuss all things about Skyrim's Dragons." It's up to you to keep this thread alive. I absolutely loved the Dragon shouts so far. That nord sounded pretty brutal when he said that! I wonder how the other races will sound with their dragon shouts. Hopefully there will be more than one voice for each race.

And the dragon in flight looks pretty decent, but its hard to tell from the trailer how well it is

Amazing thread by the way

1. What does everybody think about the combat against dragons that we saw in the trailer? The combat was phenomenal. This is the kind of combat I have been waiting for and anticipating in a game for quite some time. If Bethesda is able to pull this off, this will be great.

2. What does everybody think about the looks of the dragon(s) in the trailer? The dragons look fantastic. They remind me of the dragons from Reign of Fire, which is a good thing. They look very menacing, while still looking like beasts and not too ridiculous.

3. What does everybody think about the animations of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Them flying, banking, and crashing to the ground, attacking with fire and butting head to shield? Havoc Behavior is definitely showing with how the dragon is attacking and moving. It looks believable and overall dangerous.

4. What does everybody think is the best way going about defeating a dragon? Which will you use? Melee, Magic, Archery and do you think all will be possible? Well regardless if it's the best way, or worst, I will be going melee against dragons. There really is no other way to do it in my opinion, and I'm sure it will never get old.

5. What does everybody think about the Dragonshouts and especially the one we saw in the trailer? "Fus, Ro, Dah!” Translated into English, “Fus” means force, “Ro” means balance, and “Dah” means push. Definitely the climix and one of the most exciting parts of the trailer. At first, I was wondering how BGS would pull off the dragon shouts without them being silly. But now, I can just feel the ferocity and power behind them, and they are perfect.

6. What does everybody think about the absorbing of the dragon souls? Do you like how that looks in game so far? Absorbing dragon souls is everything I expected and then some. No complaints here.

7. What does everyone think about the scale in size of dragons compared to the player? They are definitely quite a bit larger in size. I think it's the perfect size for dragons in Skyrim. They aren't too big, but they aren't too small either. They are still menacing and look the part.

8. What does everybody think about the sounds of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Especially at the moment where it did the fire attack? They are by far scary and overwhelmingly dominating. I'm really impressed with how they have turned out. Very intense.

9. How do you think the end of the story will go down, defeat and kill Alduin or just banish him? I don't believe Dragonborn can actually kill Alduin. If anything, he will just merely thwart his plans from coming into fruition. The gods work in strange ways. Too difficult to predict.

10. Is there anything in the trailers that you didn't see regarding dragons that you would have liked to? Perhaps use his tail as a weapon? Maybe even just more exertion of strength from the dragon against Dragonborn (pushing back/tossing back). Everything for the most part was well done, so nothing really to add. I look forward to fighting many dragons in Skyrim!

In an attempt to bring some discussion to this thread I've redone the polls.

I'de love to hear from everybody on a few things about what we've seen in the recent trailer. Don't be shy, post away...

  • What does everybody think about the combat against dragons that we saw in the trailer?

I thought the combat was very cinematic obviously and I liked how they tend to treat dragon fights as something on the next level, or not the ordinary combat scenario like had you come across a troll or a wolf or something. I think people may think the dragon died to quickly or easily but I think they cut the battle scene into small clips for the sake of the video trailer. I think battles will last much longer and be hard, wear them down, and then finish them off. Speaking of which, I would've loved to see a finishing move on the dragon - Beheading him perhaps.

  • What does everybody think about the looks of the dragon(s) in the trailer?

I'm finally glad we got a definitive look of the dragons in TESV:Skyrim. They look awesome to me. Like I said before I'm confident the Dragons in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be the best dragons ever done in any video game yet!

  • What does everybody think about the animations of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Them flying, banking, and crashing to the ground, attacking with fire and butting head to shield?

I know we heard a lot about the new Havok's Behavior Technology and the improved character and creature movements but I was actually taken back by how good the dragons looked in action. Especially when they swooped or banked and crashed into the ground. I'm really looking forward to each dragon fight and I hope that each one has a different feel to it.

  • What does everybody think is the best way going about defeating a dragon? Which will you use? Melee, Magic, Archery and do you think all will be possible?

I'm sure any type of character will be able to defeat one but as the trailer shows, shield and sword seems to be the best or base way to do it. I probably will experiment but plan on doing sword and shield with my first character/playthrough.

  • What does everybody think about the Dragonshouts and especially the one we saw in the trailer? "Fus, Ro, Dah!” Translated into English, “Fus” means force, “Ro” means balance, and “Dah” means push.

I'm excited to see more dragon shouts but the "Fus, Ro, Dah" Force Push short was probably the single most epic part of the trailer. Very well designed and it gives me chills everytime i see it and I've watched it over and over again. Very well done Bethesda.

  • What does everybody think about the absorbing of the dragon souls? Do you like how that looks in game so far?

Didn't see anything not to like there. It was a obviously emphasized for the sake of the trailer but the particle effects and graphic effects looked really nice.
  • What does everyone think about the scale in size of dragons compared to the player? They are definitely quite a bit larger in size.

I was actually surprised by the size of the dragons in the game. Not that I didn't know Dragons tend to be big creatures but I didn't think they could put something that big and have it not just be a cutscene in the game. I'm impressed by the scale of the dragons and the animations and combat that go with it.

  • What does everybody think about the sounds of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Especially at the moment where it did the fire attack?

I always felt confident the sounds would be great and fitting but when the dragon actually attacked with the fire the blast of sound gave my goosebumps, it sounds so good.

  • How do you think the end of the story will go down, defeat and kill Alduin or just banish him?

I don't think we will actually defeat Alduin because I'm one of those who do believe that Alduin is infact The Dragon God of Time known by many names: Akatosh, Alduin, Auriel, Alkosh and by killing him it would result in another Dragonbreak, or break in time. I believe either the Dovahkiin or the gods will find a way to stop him from destroying Nirn and Mankind with it and banish him back to where he cannot cause any harm.
The Dragons were banished from the world of Nirn a thousand years ago, as revealed by GI. How or why is unknown to us yet but part http://media1.gameinformer.com/images/site/pages/esv/images/info2.jpg on Alduin's Wall gives us a clue.

This cryptic image tells of Alduin’s fall to humanity’s ingenuity and bravery, but more than that is not known. This piece of the puzzle would be incredibly important to understand for someone new who might hope to defeat the dragons once again. Who are the individuals standing against Alduin? How did they expel the dreaded beast from the world? Perhaps the re-emergent Dragonborn will uncover the answers.

  • Is there anything in the trailers that you didn't see regarding dragons that you would have liked to?

    - I would've loved to see a finishing move on the dragon - Beheading him perhaps but all in all I felt the debut trailer was really well done and showed us a lot about the game, not just about the dragons. I'm sure the more videos they release the more we'll find out about.

Well said and thanks for the detailed response. I agree with a lot of what you said. The dragons are a lot more menacing then I expected. I might actually feel afraid to face off with one for the first time in game. But I'm sure it will be one of my favorite parts to the game and I too look foward to fighting plenty of Dragons in Skyrim! :flame:

Well I plan on going sword and shield and using as many Dragonshouts as I have. I kind of want the battles to last long but I don't want to fool around and get myself killed obviously. I think I'll probably try to dodge a couple of their attacks and strike at the best moment. I'll try to take in all the awe-inspiring animations of the dragon themselves, as I truly am a fan (geek) of dragons in general and I hope it never gets old or stale, I don't think it will.

I might set some sort of magic traps though if simple sword and shield are not that effective. Draw it in to land and trigger my alter trap and deal a good amount of damage to it. Then run in with my sword and shield to finish it off. I too hope you get knocked around by the shear size difference between you and the beast. Like get pushed back or knocked to the ground with a swipe of it's tail.

Maybe even pinned down at some moment. I wonder what death will look like against a dragon. Will it just eat you whole or tear you to shreds. Singe you or freeze you solid with one of it's breath/language attacks. I'm sure every one of the dragon fights will be epic and different.

  • What does everybody think about the combat against dragons that we saw in the trailer?
I thought the combat looked awesome. I believe we'll get that...OH [censored]! feeling

  • What does everybody think about the looks of the dragon(s) in the trailer?
Again i thought the dragon looked awesome,we have also been told there are different types of them too...i'm happy :)

  • What does everybody think about the animations of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Them flying, banking, and crashing to the ground, attacking with fire and butting head to shield?
This is what probably impressed me the most,if i'm honest,it looked fantastic to me,i'm expecting some epic fights

  • What does everybody think is the best way going about defeating a dragon? Which will you use? Melee, Magic, Archery and do you think all will be possible?
I love my assassin/ranger/hunter types,i can't wait to start firing arrows at these beasts. I believe all styles will work, depends on skill and how the dragon fights too. Not all will just breath fire :)

  • What does everybody think about the Dragonshouts and especially the one we saw in the trailer? "Fus, Ro, Dah!” Translated into English, “Fus” means force, “Ro” means balance, and “Dah” means push.
I thought the shout looked great, can't wait to see the others, again this will lead to great fights, but that does not mean it will be easy either. In the OXM UK mag it said....don't think we are the only ones who can use these shouts

  • What does everybody think about the absorbing of the dragon souls? Do you like how that looks in game so far?
I loved how that looked personally,i wasn't expecting it to look like that.....great colours....pleased me anyway

  • What does everybody think about the sounds of the dragon(s) in the trailer? Especially at the moment where it did the fire attack?
Lol....again i loved it ( see where i'm going with my answers )....will sound better when we are actually playing it :)

  • How do you think the end of the story will go down, defeat and kill Alduin or just banish him?
I don't really know what to think here to be honest. I think the story will have many twists and turns in it....it might not be as simple as kill/banish him. I wouldn't be surprised if a faction was involved too....especially the dark brotherhood. I have no proof of this, just have a feeling

  • Is there anything in the trailers that you didn't see regarding dragons that you would have liked to?
Yes a few things actually mate. 1: Other shouts besides fire. 2: Other dragon types. 3: Showing a bit more combat with the dragon he fought....but we can't be too spoilt can we :)

There is my reaction to your questions....hope you like them.
This game is going to be amazing...plain and simple :)
I shall now read your thread again in more detail...keep up the great work cypher
