Dragons - A thread to discuss all things about Skyrim's Drag

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 3:38 pm

I REALLY hope, that on first levels (til 15? til even 20 maybe??) you 90% run away from dragon and try to hide or get to safety (dungeon, house)
I'd HATE that I wouldn't be scared of dragons, I really wanna feel as they would just kick my ass!!!
Fighting dragons on L10 would be nonsense for me, of course I hope I could put difficulty up a bit or there's more making dragons much more tougher to beat, if that is needed.

how many dragons do you guys think will be in the game? any known limits?

I don't think there will be a set amount. It's possible but I don't think it'll be just like 40 dragons in the world or something like that. I hope not anyways. I think since they are suppose to be a regular enemy that they will be plentiful around Skyrim. Not as plentiful as wolves but not like scripted into when you'll see them either. That's not to say some dragons wont be scripted or set to attack you at key points in the story though, I think they'll have both. Some key moments in the story where you must battle a dragon and some random times in the game where a you'll come across a dragon and will likely have to battle it.

All this dragon talk made me remember moments from my childhood. I hope there will be at least one interaction with a dragon kind of like this.

Well perhaps one of the first things you must do is go visit someone that will teach you how to combat dragons? Like in Oblivion you are sent to visit Jauffre at the end of the tutorial, which also starts the main quest.

So I heard that
Spoiler
At the beginning of the game your once again a prisoner but in Skyrim things are more gritty and brutal. This time around your sentenced to death by execution. The executioner is about to chop off your head when Esbern appears and saves you. Esbern is one of the last surviving Blades and mentor to Skyrim's protagonist. (voiced by Max von Sydow it's his words you hear in the trailer) I imagine that this series of events is part of the tutorial at the very beginning of the game and directly leads to where you first learn your the Dovahkiin or Dragonborn, the reason he saved you in the first place I assume.

Maybe Esbern teach you himself or maybe he'll have you visit the Greybeards atop High Hrothgar, assuming you successfully manage to climb the 7,000 steps to High Hrothgar so they can train you in the way of the tongues.

The Greybeards are known for prophesying certain people's destinies. They did so with Tiber Septim aka Talos (see spoiler)
Spoiler
Atop a great mountain that rises above the tundra and forests of Skyrim known as The Throat of the World sits High Hrothgar. A settlement that is home to the Greybeards who live in absolute silence in order to better attune themselves to the voice of the sky.

It became known from the arriving storms that the Greybeards were about to speak. As the nearby villages were being evacuated, Talos, instead, made his way to the mountains where the Greybeards lived. When he arrived, the gags of the Greybeards were removed and when they spoke his name the World shook. The Greybeards told Talos that he would come to rule Tamriel and that he must go south to do so.

These mysterious old men will play a key part in the Dragonborn’s story. They are highly versed in the power of dragons and the Dragonborn hero (you) must climb the 7,000 steps to reach the remote retreat and be trained by them.

These dragon shouts are the same source of power that launched the last line of emperors. Tiber Septim would use the dragon shouts to lead his troops into battle and unite Tamriel under one empire. Hundreds of years later, the Septim line has died out, and no other dragonborn have been seen for many years. That is, until the hero of Skyrim arrives on the scene.

It's not yet been confirmed if the Greybeards will infact be teaching you your first dragon shout but if they did it begs the question. Which one?

My guess is the one that act most like the Thu'um of Nord legends. The power of a push of great power that sends foes hurtling away from you staggered by the force of your yell. Spoken in the game, your hero will intone the three words for the full shout: “Fus, Ro, Dah!” Translated into English, “Fus” means force, “Ro” means balance, and “Dah” means push.

The ability to use the dragon language already existed in the fiction and lore of TES somewhat. It was called “Thu’um.” The concept roughly translates as “The Voice.”

King Harrald Hairy Breeks was known to have used Thu'um. Also King Wulfharth who's thu'um was so powerful that he could not verbally swear into the office when elected by the Pact of Chieftains so scribes were used to draw up his oaths, and finally with Tiber Septim who was visited at the battle of http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1150358-skyrim-trailer-breakdown/page__view__findpost__p__16838257 and taught Thu'um by Shor himself.

This power is thought to have been learned to mankind when Orkey, the god of the orcs, tried to ruin the Nords, even in Atmora where he stole their years. Seeing the strength of king Wulfharth, Orkey summoned the ghost of Alduin Time-Eater. At Orkey's request the god of time transformed nearly every Nord to the age of six. Wulfharth, now a child, pleaded to Shor, the dead Chieftain of the Gods, to help his people. Shor's own ghost then fought the Time-Eater on the spirit plane, as he did at the beginning of time and won. Orkey's folk, the orcs, were ruined by this act. Wulfharth watched the battle in the sky and learned a new thu'um, wich he called What Happens When You Shake the Dragon Just So. He used this new magic to change his people back to normal. But in his haste to save so many, he shook too many years out on himself. He grew older than the Greybeards themself, and died. The flames of his pyre were said to have reached the hearth of Kyne itself.

Maybe while walking down the steps you'll even encounter your first dragon and have to test out your new ability? Who knows.

But Dragons are suppose to be a regular threat and I'de like to think they would give you some tools before you start your journey.

I fear that we'll just have to wait until The Hobbit, a working title for a planned two-part film, comes out. It's currently in pre-production, an adaptation of the 1937 novel The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, will direct the films and also serve as producer and co-writer.
By the way that is my all time favorite book. I like the LOTR Trilogy but I LOVE The Hobbit! I've been waiting for this movie since I too was a child.

Hello guys, this is actually my first post on the forums...but I've been lurking and reading the different threads and learning about the game. :)

Any I'd just like to say that the Dragon design looks incredible, from the trailer their animations and movements look very very impressive. More so than in most other games featuring dragons

I don't really like western style dragons. Just mindless beasts breathing fire, destroying villages and looking like dinosaurs. They are just stale and don't usually add any depth to lore cause they have been used so much in western culture.

So you are supposed to go around killing dragons and saving villages? Not really an original idea and that's sad because in the past Beth has developed wonderful and original lore for TES.

Since Beth decided to bring dragons to Skyrim I hoped they would be these eastern style, wise and serpentine-like creatures with depth. Not beasts, more like NPC's, created with Beth's own style and not just copied from another lore.

Well, maybe Skyrim's dragons can still turn out ok, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

i'm thrilled to bits with the dragons.
The animations are exellent, and the size of the dragon was bigger than i thought.
There are different types....but we don't know how different exactly, whether it's size, colour etc.
I believe the dragon fight in the trailer was 100% in-game,i have no doubt.
Bethesda has been carefull about their info so far,i don't believe we've been lied to.
It's a trailer....trailers are meant to show good things.
It's just been edited ( the dragon fight ) to show off what they've done with dragons, and to show the hero....who is dragonborn.
They have to show the dragonborn off,to make him look kickarse...thats all.
Fighting dragons won't be as easy in game....it was just to show off the dragonborn and the dragon/dragons,graphically and animation wise.
I thought the trailer was EPIC....i still can't believe that is xbox footage...it really is a great achievement.
Every time we see new info it just seems to get better and better.....to me at least anyway.
We should be grateful that we got a trailer like that in the first place.....to me that trailer was worthy of an E-3 showing. :)

Bump from page 6! I seen 8 threads while i kept going further down about dragons too. :sigh:

The thing is TES and Skyrim especially is more western style RPG in terms of looks and lore and everything. I think the Eastern style dragons, Chinese/Japanese Serpents, would not fit. Maybe if it wasn't Skyrim and Tamriel but Akavir?

For a brief generalization, the modern Eastern Dragon that has been inherited has the body of a snake, belly of a frog, scales of a carp, head of a camel, horns of a giant stag, the eyes of a hare, ears like a bull, a neck like an iguana, paws like a tigers, and claws like an eagle. Eastern dragons are described with an angelic authority and beauty and possess incredible wisdom.

I respect your opinion but I am excited to see Wyvern style dragons and for once Bethesda do dragons right! The best dragons we've seen in a video game yet.

They are supposed to be able to talk so im sure you will get your wise dragon fix, maybe with the older dragons that are part of a quest line and not just there to kill. Im thrilled with the design of the dragons and wouldnt mind if they had leaned more toward the reign of fire dragon look, which i think is the perfect dragon look in my opinion. Skyrims need bigger wings and more attached to the body but not gona complain. They nailed the head and the spines

TES is definitely western style RPG, but I always taught that the medieval look of TES was more due to the fact that it's western style game and not cause Beth really wanted to make medieval simulation fantasy game. Now that they added dragonslaying and if the landscape is more of the realistic style (like Oblivion was more realistic style compared to Morrowind with it's big mushrooms and all that)... I really can't avoid seeing the growing resemblance compared to medieval Europe style fantasy and I really wanted TES to stay as original as possible.

Don't get me wrong, Skyrim will be awesome and this isn't any major flaw, but until I see how this dragon-thing turns out, I'm not convinced that Beth hasn't taken the easy way out with the lore. They could have created some new monster of their own (instead of using dragons) and build the lore around that. That's the reason why I wanted more eastern style dragons cause I am not so familiar with the lore around them. I really think that Beth would have had the talent to pull that off.

I understand these concerns, nobody likes bland remakes with no story or reason behind it especially in RPG games. That being said I don't think The Elder Scrolls has gone down that path at all. The continent Tamriel varies from region to region. Morrowind is suppose to look like that while the provinces: Cyrodiil and Skyrim are suppose to look like they do. They have always been like this from the lore in the beginning they were described as such. Each region in Tamriel is different not only in looks but also in the history of the lands and the people who settled them. That's what I like about TES, each game is different from the last because it takes place in a new region and the open sandbox world they let you explore are all different and unique but they all are true to the rich lore that to be honest not many games can match.

Don't get me wrong, Skyrim will be awesome and this isn't any major flaw, but until I see how this dragon-thing turns out, I'm not convinced that Beth hasn't taken the easy way out with the lore. Yeah I see what you mean. I think it's partly what's familiar to the consumer and what will draw more in to the game as well though. And maybe what matches the landscape best, I think the Wyvern style Dragons suit Skyrim pretty well. I know Todd addressed this a little.

"We have a different take on Dragons. So on one hand we like fantasy and we like Dragons. We always wanted to see [Dragons] done really well in a game. So we're trying that now. But the way they classically have a dragon and he breathes fire. Well now our dragons are speaking in this ancient language, or this dragon language, that creates fire"

So clearly they wanted to take the classic view of Dragons and "twist it a bit where it still familiar to somebody but it does have it's own uniqueness to being Elder Scrolls and to the culture and lore of Elder Scrolls.

Also with each new TES game comes new lore so I think a lot of the lore for Skyrim and the resurgent dragons in the past will be new and I'm hoping they can coincide with the past lore about dragons some how rather then retconning it all.

Not all no, as anything they http://www.google.com/images?q=Wyvern&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&sa=X&ei=625rTdn_F4aKlwe0qpz_AQ&ved=0CEgQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=574 and style but in general the Wyvern is a dragon with the body of a serpent, the head of a dragon (sorta shaped like a crocodile), wings of a bat, two legs, and a long, barbed tail.

Skyrim's dragons are along these lines. Batlike wings attacked to the arms, a long tail with a sort of barbed rudder look to it almost like the same skin of the wings membrane hsd, and they definitely have a dragon looking head sorta like a croc.

So there will be different kinds of dragons in Skyrim?
For second can they attack from above without landing, thats looks strange to lose such advantage in combat with limited to land only enemy.
I trailer I see thats after dead dragon left remains they was made from stone?

The eastern style would not fit at all. I encourage the medieval atmosphere of tes because as far as im concerned no one has ever done it as well as bethesda. And with this next edition, they are about to take it to the next level. I have complete faith in bethesda but i would rather them push the limit on what they know.

Some good questions. Actually all three are unknown to me. There are suppose to be different dragons but I'm not sure they are talking about different as in how they attack or looks and features and all that. I would think they could attack while flying or fly in and attack before landing but the trailer clips were handpicked for effect so I wouldn't take that as the end all of how every dragon fight will take place. And lastly we don't know for sure yet what happens to dragons bodies after death. There's a part of magazine article that says they burst into flames and burn to cinder. But it could also mean the animation of you absorbing the souls. As we saw in the trailer, had sort of a flame effect. I think the more gameplay footage we'll see these questions will be answered. :)

Todd said for sure, that there are different dragons, but how different,we don't know yet.
I think size will be one,as for colour and other things we don't know.
But they all won't breath just fire, some will do wind, ice etc.
I also think ( if i remember right ) they can breath fire, ice etc down on us from above.
Dragons will be harder to kill, than what we saw in the trailer for sure.
That was done to show the game off,to show the dragons off,and to show how kickarse the dovahkiin was, thats all. :)

That's what i mean. He has been quoted saying Dragons will have "different attacks" so is that what they mean by different dragons or do they mean different looks and/or color. The actual appearance of the dragon.

I'm thinking most if not all the dragons will look the same. The differences will come with their voice and their attacks. Just my guess.

I agree. I don't believe any other game even comes close to Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls. For how long they've been doing it and the quality of the games. I fully expect Skyrim to be nominated and win game of the year again, just like Morrowind and Oblivion did.

Bump.

Added new info and again thanks to The Luggage for helping me in gathering the info from the UK OXM Magazine.

I'll post the new info below as I realize it can be hard to see what's new and old in all the info of the original post.

Defeated, what happens to them?
It is not fully known yet what happens to dragons when they die or are defeated. We know the Player (Dovahkiin) will absorb their souls fueling his/her ability to use Dragonshouts (More on this below in the Dragon Shout section) but if the dragon's body stays for awhile or what happens to it has sparked a bit of discussion. Some believe it turns to stone while others, as magazines have suggested, believe the bodies of defeated dragons burn up in flames.

In the UK OXM Article there is a text-box that is next to a picture of a dead dragon that is being surrounded by what looks like the flame animation you briefly see in the game trailer:

"SOUL PURPOSE: One of the benefits of being a Dragonborn is that when you finally manage to slay one of the ruddy great things, you're able to absorb its soul, learning new shouts in the process. There's even an impressive animation as the dragon's body burns to cinders. In theory, you can engage a dragon whenever you see one simply by pelting it as it flies past, but you'd better make sure you're ready for the fight."
