Dragonshouts

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 11:18 am

What ARE you going to be for the record? I mean, in a game where you are DRAGONBORN and the plot revolves around YOU being DRAGONBORN is kind of strange seeing as you are going to be told you are DRAGONBORN. It's like Geralt pretending he's not a Witcher.

I'm going to be a regular female bosmer like in Oblivion. I'm not going to use the dragonshouts, and i'm going to try and ignore the whole dragonborn thing. If it turns out to be a very basic platform for the main story to start, ignoring it shouldn't be a problem. If however it turns out that the whole main story is revolved around telling me who my character is, then i'll simply have to avoid the main questline and enjoy the game for it's side quests and mods. I'll be a little disappointed, but it won't matter much. I'll still get hundreds of hours of enjoyment from the game.

And you can't really compare it to TW2. TW2 is a story-based RPG with a set character. Elder Scrolls games should give the player total freedom over who their character is. That's exactly why I hate that i'm told i'm Dovahkiin.

Fair do's.
And I used The Witcher as an example because there is a character with a title attached, just as you're a character in Elder Scrolls with a title.

Your main issue is that it makes our characters audible, which could break immersion, right? Well we had voices and yells from our characters for combat during Oblivion too, and I (personally) had no problem with it. There's no issue of accents or dialect speak in terms of language, because the character would be speaking Dragon (not English/French/German/etc). As for the cheap way out of a fight with dragons, the OP defeated his whole argument there all by his self. The only issue I'm worried about is being forced to use magic in the MQ, but Bethesda has come out and said that Dragonshouts are a whole separate system from Magic, so all in all I'm going with "Good Idea."

If you heard a recording of yourself getting hurt or making small grunts, you would probably not recognize that it was your voice.

Screaming words from the top of your lungs however. That's a voice you'll likely recognize.

It's my character. This isn't a standard action game with RPG elements. I don't need a Geralt or a Commander Shepard or a John Marston.

If I don't want my character to be dragon born, that should be my choice.

I don't care whether or not we're forced to use it, or if it gives our character as much voice as Link does in Zelda games.

Todd has confirmed some shouts useful for stealthing. One teleports you which can be used to quickly backstab. And he said it is a whisper so you don't alert people.

That's interesting. Here's hoping Todd sheds some more light on this next week.

Just curious, did you have a similar objection to being the Nerevarine (assuming you played Morrowind)?

As others have said you could certainly avoid the main quest and not use the shouts.

It would make little sense to do the main quest but try to pretend you weren't the dragonborn, because then it would be some other dragonborn's main quest.

Right?

Yes you would? If you are alone, you would be the only one grunting. If you are the one get hurt you are grunting.

And again, what's the problem with that?

don't deny what you are. if you played fallout 3 we're you upset you we're some kid born in a vault instead of someone in megaton? you might be able to pretend you wern't born in a vault but the fact remains you we're born in a vault. and you are a

Right?

Kind've. Although Morrowind was the first TES game I played and I didn't follow any build-up to it whatsoever. What annoys me a lot about the whole dragon born thing is constantly hearing about "Dovahkiin" like he's an actual character before i've even touched the game and made MY character.

Oblivion handled the player-character a lot better in my opinion. Yes, you were the hero, but the story mostly revolved around Martin.

Anyway, like I said, i'll try and ignore the whole dragon born thing. If it's too prominent in the storyline, i'll just stop doing the main quest and focus on side stuff + mods.

Have you played New Vegas? Just curious.

I sort of took that to be a title/characteristic rather than a name. It just refers to the idea that you are a dragonborn. I think this could lead to really cool roleplaying. If it was the circumstances of your character's birth then they would have no influence over it. Perhaps that just adds to the pathos of a character who doesn't want the burden of being the dragonborn. I dunno I'm just fishing here.
