Dragonshouts

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 12:07 am

I think it's a bad idea because of ...

* Facts
It gives the players a voice.

* Speculation
We may be forced to use magic, as part of the main quest.
It may be used as a cheap way to get out of tough situations. (Make future dragon fights easy, etc. Yeah, I know, don't use it.)
It looks like the control passes through our hands as we absorb the dragon's soul.

Feel free to explain your choice. I'm curious to see if I'm in minority conserning this.

Who said that even with shouts dragon fights won't be hard?
I personally don't see how shouts are different from greater powers?

Definitely a bad idea in my opinion. Grunts and battle groans I can live with, but dragonshouts are a step in the wrong direction towards a voice acted player-character.

I'm just going to ignore the feature entirely when playing the game and pretend that i'm not dragon born.

Yeah it gives your character a voice, A VOICE HE/SHE ALWAYS HAD! Wanna hear it? Jump down from a high mountain or stand before an angry lion without defending yourself, you'll hear it soon enough.
Oh no, you can hear your character shouting magical words you've ordered to do. IMMERSION IS RUINED.

I don't really see it being forced on you, other than it's handy to use, and completing certain parts would be more difficult without shouts. Just like magic really...
For being cheap... don't see it any more cheaper than spells really...
Oh and losing control. Ooooh, you won't be able to move for 5 seconds while you absord the soul. Oh no, so much freedom is lost

Overall, I really don't understand all these complaints.

Um, Dragon Shouts don't use Magicka. They have their own resource/timer. They are abilities granted to you because you are Dovakhiin. You can't really RP around that unless you don't do the main quest.

Regarding shouts, can we only use them against dragons, or can we use them against anybody and anything?

It doesn't really give the player a voice, it's kind of like grunting in previous games. Besides you're not really saying anything you can understand.
Also like someone said in another thread, dragonshouts are more of a superpower, you wouldn't exactly say that superman a Mage.
Also it has a long cooldown I *think* if you use one dragon shout, all of them go on cooldown. So you won't be spamming them like flare or something.

People ALWAYS find something to complain about... "I DONT LIEK OBLIVION GATES REMOVE THEM, THEY MAKE YOU HAVE TO USE THEM TO MUCH FOR THE MAIN STORY!" it's important for the main story... Just like oblivion gates..

What ARE you going to be for the record? I mean, in a game where you are DRAGONBORN and the plot revolves around YOU being DRAGONBORN is kind of strange seeing as you are going to be told you are DRAGONBORN. It's like Geralt pretending he's not a Witcher.

amazing idea. a new layer of combat.

the examples so far are epic. also they are completely separate from magic.

One think comes into mind, are they going to make two voices (male and female) for each race because aren't that going to take up much disc space.
But from the stuff i have seen (the trailer) i looks pretty cool.

I find myself agreeing with most of your posts.
I think it has the potential to vastly improve everything.
Gives the player the opportunity to do lots of cool stuff, without having to focus down a particular root. Whilst still giving you the option to ignore it if you deem fit.

I don't like the idea much myself to me it just seems like a way to shoehorn magical powers into every character
You don't have to use them if you don't want though.

For the record.

Dragonshouts might be the coolest thing since the idea of free will, but if I go by the information they given us this far, I have to say, I don't like it.

Please don't attack people for their opinions.

Dragonshouts might be good i implied in a good way but as i said before I don't like the fact that they are using disc space for voices for every PC race

I like the idea, it's something unique to The Elder Scrolls and it's been in the lore long before Skyrim was even being thought of.
I don't really see it as giving the character a voice, if you want to see an RPG with a voiced protagonist, play Alpha Protocol or Mass Effect, this is hardly anything more than the grunting that was in previous games. From a gameplay point of view it sounds like a fun new addition that will provide for some interesting scenarios (and probably some funny videos on the internet, people shouting at mudcrabs :D) and sounds like it will integral to the story.
And if you don't like it, don't use it.... yeah, I went there.

Why do you hate it so much? It's a HUGE part of the game... Why does it bother people so much that their character will speak a little gibberish??

Why do you care that he doesn't like it? Why does it bother people so much when someone has a different opinion?

I'm liking the Dragon Shouts so far:

Slow Time
Movement increase/Teleport
Force Wave
Summon a Dragon

I love the idea that non magical characters have more up their sleeve than swinging weapons or shooting arrows

As for your concerns OP, the voice issue is a slight one, and not nearly enough to deter me from enjoying the game.

The main quest centers around you being a Dragonborn, so yeah, probably gonna have to use a Shout. I can't find this to be a problem though.

Your main issue is that it makes our characters audible, which could break immersion, right? Well we had voices and yells from our characters for combat during Oblivion too, and I (personally) had no problem with it. There's no issue of accents or dialect speak in terms of language, because the character would be speaking Dragon (not English/French/German/etc). As for the cheap way out of a fight with dragons, the OP defeated his whole argument there all by his self. The only issue I'm worried about is being forced to use magic in the MQ, but Bethesda has come out and said that Dragonshouts are a whole separate system from Magic, so all in all I'm going with "Good Idea."

That's also my intention. I'm not really atall that interested in the whole 'dragon shout' thing. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not against shouts being in the game. I just don't think they'd really suit my playstyle. I'm particularly fond of stealth orientated characters, so running around shouting at everything doesn't really appeal to me.

However for a hulking barbarian, they're perfect.

Todd has confirmed some shouts useful for stealthing. One teleports you which can be used to quickly backstab. And he said it is a whisper so you don't alert people.
