[WIPz/RELz] Drake's Anthro-Dragon Race (No.6)

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:03 am

Well, I triple-checked my references, and other sources, but all images I used had the hind claw on the outer side of the feet, not the inside. Anatomically those are what became of the little toe, which is on the outside, so I don't know.
But further research brought somewhat mixed results, although with a strong emphasis into one direction. By now I have 76 images with the hind claw on the outside and 21 with it on the inside. Guess I'll try checking out some dinosaur fossils next to decide. A little touch of realism that way won't hurt.

The albino one isn't my creation. I'm the wrong person to ask for changes. But it was done on request, if I remember correctly, and the requester was quite satisfied with it the way it is.

But as for the wings, they already are http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/3428/blackdragonscaly1.jpg. Adding in a http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/818/saphireschemewip2.jpg and making them http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/3475/newscalytexturesandwingk.jpg was a key feature of this improvement. They might seem flat, because they "are" flat. They're just membranes after all. Anyways, trying to improve the normalmaps, so they perhaps get a little more... relief or what it's called, should never hurt. I was never an expert with normalmaps and I kept those less pronounced on purpose initially. I could also try to pronounce the vein layer some more, so it's not that... fainty (is that even a word?), but they're not meant to be fairy wings or butterfly ones either, so I don't want to go too far with the transparency.

I'm glad you like it so far, and constructive criticism, suggestions, ideas, or even requests are always welcome,... if I can find some time to actually make something of it that is.

I've read through most of this thread and I do like what you guys are doing. It looks good.

However, the feet look backwards. The little 'toe' adrift on the ankle looks off and potentially hazardous if one had a toe like that. Being on the inside ankle area would make more anatomical sense and would look more of what some would expect a dragon to have.

The textures and colors are very nice so far. The albino one had me interested, but it seems lacking in albinism. It seems more of a white dragon than an albino. Most albino reptiles are a cream/yellow/light orange in color, so adjusting those values shouldn't be so bad. And possibly the claws/prongs on tail/claws could go a cream color to match with the lack of pigmentation for it's scales. And I do love the wings a lot. Do you think adding a slight veiny texture to the wings? Currently, the seem flat, but appealing.

This isn't really a request on my behalf, but some constructive criticism to make your dragons look the part. Good work, Drake. I'm really impressed. :)

I did that as a request quite awhile ago. Since then Drake has updated the textures and whatnot. I really had no plan on going back to redo them. All that was done was a bit of a recolor. Anything more is really outside of what I really do. If you feel like updating those please feel free. Otherwise if you would like another recolor I might try and see if I could do something. Adding anything additional (such is veins is really a bit beyond what I know how to do.)

Alright, I think it's time for another update, even though there's not much to tell.
Progress currently is as slow as never before. It seems I don't get around to do anything else than working lately at all.
My family decided I don't need a new pc unless I'm done with university, or at least back on track, and while they have no right to tell a near-30 year old advlt what to do or not to do (it's my money after all and I'm working hard for it), I somewhat agree with them on the importance to take up my studies and finally finish this diploma. I'm just a student research(sp?) and two oral examinations away from my diploma thesis, but for more than 3 years now without any progress whatsoever. I'm only paying 700€ per season without actually using anything of what I paid for, which can't go on for much longer of course. That close to the end aborting is not an option either, at least not to me. But finally getting around to take it up again is a completely different story again.
Oh, well, I think getting back on track shouldn't be that hard though. Just telling you so you know the period without a working pc is not going to end too soon now.

Back on topic, I did some more research regarding dinosaur, reptile and digitigrade feet anatomy. I must say I'm glad I did and I have to thank dramamine213 for this.
Did you know most of the 3-toed species actually had 1 such significantly smaller toe on "both" sides of the feet? I couldn't find any feet without 5 toes, just some of them were always at a different, not-so-visible location. So I'm on the right way already but have to alter the location where the 1st and 5th toe connect. In direct contrast to countless numbers of reference pics for dragon feet the smallest of the 5 toes, the equivalent to the thumb, is on the "inside" (although the 2nd smallest is on the outside then and often not too obviously bigger), and my model isn't really that accurate aiming at realism. I think I can do better than that and will take all this into consideration while redesigning the feet anatomy, which is still in progress by the way. I just wish there was more opportunity to do so than only "once per month".

Nevertheless, now you know what I'm currently up to... or better yet aren't... though still there is some progress after all. I just hope I can present at least some images soon, maybe a modified skeleton for the really curious and brave to try out for me (this will require to temporarily replace your main skeleton, thus all NPCs will look... well, not-so-nice... that's why I said "brave"). Only time will tell. We'll see.

Consider this an informative bump.

I'll try it out for you :obliviongate: !

But there is a little problem:
NPCs using these skeletons will exaggerate all head movements. They are likely to stare at the floor whilst moving, and exaggerate any glances at other NPCs. This is a known bug and unfixable.

I'm led to believe this won't apply in my case. But I will see that once I'm done with my changes.
edit: ...or was that for dynamically changing the skeleton while ingame? ...nevertheless, scripting this currently is far out of my reach anyways, so this case won't apply either for now.

Thanks for volunteering in advance. :D

 Woohoo! If this is the result, then I hope you keep getting bored quite often in future.

I also like the mixture you did of these 3 different armor items. It's really fitting together nicely that way.
Instantly saved to my disk for future reference.

How has the summer been for you Drake? It's been awhile since I've last looked at this thread, I understand that summertime can kill one's free time.

It was summertime? When did that happen?!... Well, actually I was, and am still, only working all day and night. Nothing else did happen apart from work... I'm tired of it, but there's no end in sight.
I didn't make any progress, with none of my projects, in no regards. It's a real shame, but still without a pc there's not much I could do either. And then there's always this insane amount of work to do... I can't even think of getting some time to buy a pc, continue my studies at university, or even dare playing something for a change... I just don't see that coming.

We had a couple more deaths in the family also... you're really getting afraid of who might be next... 3 successive deaths due to cancer or tumors... I'm not feeling very comfortable thinking of my diabetes right now. Luckily I'm regularly below 60 mg/dl (80-120 is normal) with my blood sugar, some measurements actually quite close to coma, if I can believe what the doctors in hospital were telling me years ago after I was woken up by an EMR team with a glucose injection... this doctor at the emergency reception was actually asking me if I was awake and could understand him... when I answered in perfectly clear speech why he was asking this, he flinched at first and then said "normally patients with a blood sugar as low as your's right now are already in coma" (way to go for soothing a worried patient shortly after arriving in hospital, no?)... so I think I'm far enough away from risking any long-time damage caused by too high blood sugar... and successfully surviving a blood sugar of less than 30 without trouble I'm not in danger of becoming comatose either. It's just like my doctor always says: "I'm not the least in worry about you and hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar). Normal patients would be in the ICU, yes, but when 'you' are getting a hypoglycemia you're just falling asleep and a few hours later waking up with a terrible headache and your blood sugar back to normal again, that's all." I'm not so sure if this is really relieving though.

Ah, but enough of this off-topic spam. There's nothing on-topic to report though, but that doesn't mean I have to spam you with my personal problems and worries instead. :whistling:

I am at a loss of words, after understanding your predicament, Drake...

Even though it may not be worth anything or of any use, I just want to say that I feel terribly sorry on knowing of your plight, and that you and your family have my heartfelt condolences.

I also want to wish you and your family well in the times to come, that these troubles will ultimately subside soon, and that no more misfortune will ever befall you and your loved ones ever again in the times to come.

Please stay strong, and take good care of yourself.

It's appreciated, thank you.
But don't worry, I'm fine.

The last happenings seem to affect me far less than I thought they would... or I'm far more mature than I thought I'd be.
This or after the loss of my father last year the loss of more distant relatives can't be compared anymore now...
I don't know... and I honestly don't want to think too much about it either. Maybe I'm just weird, who knows?

All I know is I'm far stronger when it comes to these things than I always thought.
I'm actually quite emotional and caring very much for others... but when it comes to personal loss it seems I'm not affected very much of it.
And diabetes shouldn't be overestimated. It's not a disability or anything, just an illness. I can do everything I want, eat all I want, I just need to know how much it was and how much insulin to inject to counteract it. My doctor's very pleased with the success of my therapy so far and there is nothing to worry about. It's under control. I can live with it.

You see, there's no need to be worried or feel sorry or whatever. It's all fine.
The only thing that is really driving me nuts is that I want to continue modding but can't right now.
But even this situation is only temporary. I don't know when it will end yet, but it will end eventually, that's for sure.

First off, awesome work! Second, after reading through this thread, I guess I am the only one with this problem, but when I play as a dragon, over time, the game takes longer and longer to save. It only happens when I play as a dragon though, if I play as any other race, save times are normal. I think it might be due to one of the scripts. also, looking in the cs, the dragon races are set to use custom voice files, but none are included in the mod, so I set it to use the Argonian set, in addition, is there a texture for the upperbody/chest? In the cs, it was set to use the imperial upperbody texture, so I changed it to use the foot texture, with doesn't map out right. buuuut...... overall this is one of my favorite mods, can't wait to see what comes out next!
