Meanwhile, in the tower...
*I paused to take a breather and found myself all alone. The place outside the tower window was burning, with only one path forward that even the fighters of the fire had took.*
*But, if not for the fire, why had they run?*
*I turned to the door, and saw an amethyst reptilian eye peering through a hole in the wall. A bellowing roar seemed to shake the ground I stood on as I ran as fast as I could out of the door, towards the free path...*
Only to find the dragon landed on the path, looking straight at Faire. It didn't attack yet, but merely stared.
*Confused thoughts rushed through my head. Had I heard that cry before somewhere? Had I seen that strange stare somewhere before?*
What are you staring at? *The dragon snorted, sending a puff of smoke out of its snout. A whisper sounded in my ear.*
The end is near, Fire Bringer.
The dragon took no more time, and attacked. It swiped with one of its claws and Faire attempted to jump over it, but the dragon caught her in its grip. It raised Faire to its head, opening its maw and breathing smoke on her.
*I was scared as the dragon caught me. I wriggled and writhed, but I could not get free. I looked into its eyes and felt fear.*
*Or perhaps it was pity*.
Hey, scaly face! Put me down right now! *I managed to get my right arm free and punched the dragon in the snout. It blinked in surprise and dropped me on the ground*
*I drew my two swords and looked at the dragon. It was preparing its fire breath, but was still on the ground*. OK, weak points on a dragon. Um...the eye maybe? The mouth? Better decide quickly...*
The dragon let out a stream of fire, and Faire only narrowly dodged it. It roared in frustration and started to extend its wings.
Oh no, I don't think so. *Charon jumped from behind the dragon and sliced through the right wing with Goldbrand, cauterising the wound with the weapon's fire. The dragon screamed and flipped over, sending Charon flying off its back.*
*I watched as Charon landed just in front of me, looking straight at the dragon. It was trying to get back up.*
Better stay back, Faire. Even with one wing, this creature is still very dangerous.
Charon charged forward wielding Goldbrand, trying to catch the dragon as it was regaining balance. The dragon recovered just in time, however, and pushed him back with a wall of flame.
*I decided to act. With no element of surprise, Charon was like a fish out of water in this fight. I ran up to him as he tried to find a way to get past the flame wall. The dragon was still on the other side of it, waiting.* Charon?
I told you to get back, kid.
Sorry Charon. *I took him my surprise and shoulder barged him, catching Goldbrand in my right hand. It hissed in protest at the abrupt change in ownership.*
*Charon tried to stop me, but he was tired from the fight so far and I was faster. I ran towards the wall of fire, sweeping Goldbrand through a section of the wall. Blue fire surged from the sword and the wall evaporated. The dragon stood in front of me, it's torn wing folded back. It breathed an inferno on me, but I lifted Goldbrand up and threw it straight, just like when I used to do javelin throwing at the town. The sword flew straight, cutting a path through the fire with a blue flame of its own, finally embedding itself in the dragon's mouth. It screamed as it was enveloped by Goldbrand's flame, thrashing about and slashing my left arm with its talon. The dragon began to...sort of melt, eventually leaving only a pile of ash and Goldbrand where the creature had once been.*
I guess you've got luck on your side, kid. Now hold still while I clean up your hand and arm.
My hand? *I looked at my right hand. It had a nasty burn going across the middle of it.* Oh.
