Entirely possible, we did have a vehicle to drive in fallout 2.

Still you'd think they would have at least shown a clip of it in the trailer. But i guess we will find out in a week or so.

I'm on the fence for it, depends how it's implemented into the game. Could be really good, could be really bad.

So long as the game is not transformed into a post apocaliptic GTA it's fine for me.

We also got a mad max game coming soon, has been in the works for quite awhile as far as im aware. It's supposed to focus a lot on driving (from what i saw, it sort of looks like red dead redemption but with cars instead of horses), so if you need post apocalyptic driving fix, hopefully that will do.

If there is driving I don't want it to be some like new vehicle. Something more like a 200+ year old death trap that is wheezing and sputtering. I mean who would have a like new perfect car after a nuclear apocalypse?

If they implemented things like your car/motorcycle breaking down (thus having to work to maintain it, if you want), enemies having vehicles, and it not just being some bullet sponge that gets you in 5 minutes from Point A to Point B, it could be okay. But they would have to have some good mechanics too, which I doubt they have.

90 % of movie based games are complete ''''''.

I am very sceptical.

With fast travel, vehicles would essentially be pointless for other than exploring newer areas bit faster and getting those fast travel points. It would in my opinion ruin the game.

I could however see quest of finding parts from old vehicles(a nuclear reactor or something) where some NPC is trying to build his own car from scratch, but fails and blows up his house or something. He then survives and you'll have a crazy travel companion with an interest of mechanics(which could be useful in making new weapons).

It's been in production far longer than the movie, it's not a typical movie game that comes out a couple weeks before the movie and uses aspects from the movie resulting in the game only taking a year to complete.
I remember hearing about this game 3 years ago, and it's still not out yet.

It would be nice for vehicles but I do not think it will work out well. Either it will be useless or take too much out of the other aspects of the game. Also I think you will need a game world about 10 times the size of Skyrim if not larger. I would rather see animals you can ride. Maybe Brahmin.

[edit]

I did not even know that Mad Max game was being made.

I have low expectations that the game will be good.

I agree, I know we get the claim that its to TES but I'd like to have the option of riding, not least because for me it reduces the need to fast travel.

We are going to need one big truck with huge tires and thick treads because if the landscape is anything like fallout 3 game theres not going to be much wiggle room and roads are tattered and block with a lot of debris and then theres the whole it runs on nucklear power..I dont want to be anywhere near that thing when it catches fire. They could have it like fallout 2 were its a method of super fast travel?

I'd like if they did fast travel like the old ones, you pick a location on the map and your cursor moves slowly across the map, if you hit a random encounter or find a place of interest it jumps you out of the map and into the game world.

With a vehicle you could speed this up, as well as increase the player's survival skill for the purposes of avoiding random encounters (id also like the survival skill to take into account random encounters, the better the skill, the sooner you get notified about the encounter and get to act accordingly, like if it were a group of raiders, with a good skill you'd see them from further back for example).

Could just be the art for the repair skill book, motor mechanics.

I can already see an achievement for the game called driving miss daisy. :) you have to fast travel in the car with a female companion.

ugh i hope not, to make driving worth while the map would have to have long barren patches that would make walking on foot tedious. Also most games that don't focus on driving tend to have...really bad driving mechanics

Horses in Skyrim traveled ridiculously slow and the faster horses caused glaring pop-ins in the environment and lag at times. Considering the Fo4 engine is just an upgraded one we saw in Skyrim I highly doubt the vehicles will be handled well. I would prefer just sticking to walking, because then Bethesda can improve on what they know how to do best.

Honestly I hope not. Just doesn't fit with regards to map sizes that we're used to.

Eh, I don't really want a vehicle. Like whiteguy1x said, the driving probably wouldn't be very good...

What could be interesting and help with roleplaying or whatever is maybe a vehicle that enabled you to fast travel. I still want regular fast travel, but for those who are more hardcoe about your journeys, you could get in your car or motorcycle or whatever, and it could open the map for you to select a destination, and it would take you there.** Something like that would be a fine implementation, but I can't see a successful version of maneuvering a car through the wasteland. (Riding your car up 90 degree mountains, driving underwater, catching air when you're not supposed to or vice versa... I can see all kinds of annoying bugs happening)

**Actually I think there's a NV mod that does that, though I've never used it.

Driving could make for a nice fast travel approach. Maybe not actually drive the car but maybe with driving skills your fast travel could go smoother. Especially if they were to add some random travel issues or random encounters to the fast travel for lower driving skills.

Like: The car breaks down in the middle of a bunch of deathclaws.

(yeah, I'm always dreaming and generally they stay my dreams only. )

I like that idea a lot actually. I would really like some random encounters during fast travel, or even while you're sleeping. I don't want to bothered all the time by them, but occasionally it would be cool.

Great Idea. I wish we could up vote or thumbs up a post in these forums because I definitely would. Fast Travel especially in Fo shouldn't be a walk in the park getaway. A feeling of uneasiness when fast-travelling would add to the post-apocalyptic atmosphere and also encourage exploration.

I would like it, I recently tried the XRE: Cars! Mod for new vegas (which is a pretty epic achievment by the author of that mod btw), and it was a lot of fun. Maybe they run on fission batteries and mini nukes or something?

I would definitly dig a customizable mobile player home.

In fallout 2 cars ran off of energy or microfusion cells, they could do the same.

My opinion is that it would be best suited for vehicles such as motorcycles and small cars, they would only run at about twice the player's run speed and you could still be shot at while in use. They would obviously need to be abandoned for certain terrains, mayhaps they would reappear at the player's home if left unattended for a certain amount of time, unless destroyed. Could be that they have a computer chip AI to explain how they un/respawn.
