Dual Shielding

Post » Sat Jun 18, 2011 10:20 pm

Okay, I know we’ve all had fun joking about this but take a minute to consider a few things and you may understand why the idea has me more than a little excited.

1. Most real life hand to hand combat systems are self defense, right? The idea with self defense is to let your enemy strike first and redirect his energy against him, right?

2. I’ve been reading that Skyrim’s block system is reactive and based on timing, i.e. you have to block at the right time for it to be effective.

3. Also, confirmed block skill perks: Shield Wall, Deadly Bash, Power Bash, Bash Disarm, Shield Charge, Deflect Arrows, Elemental Protection, Quick Reflexes.

4. We’ve heard rumors for and against H2H as a skill in Skyrim but at the very least there has been confirmation in at least one interview that playing as a monk a.k.a. “unarmed combat specialist” is a viable play style.

Now I know what you’re thinking, who would run around with two big clunky shields equipped at the same time? How ridiculous would that look? But what if they were really small shields? Maybe even just arm guards?

Honestly, this is all almost pure conjecture on my part but it seems like it could be a pretty fun play style. Imagine if one of the Dragon Shouts is some kind of taunt to get enemies to start attacking you so you can use those nice shiny block perks. Even just a frenzy spell (which has also already been confirmed) would complete this build.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the subject; needless to say we’re all pretty anxious for November to get here, huh? lol

Yes it is.

I'm not even sure what you're proposing. Two small shields to replace Hand to Hand?

A lot of people would disagree, if they hadn't been killed by having their skulls bashed in by shields.

I loved the PC gamer joke about the confused turtle, but honestly I can't see this being used. Maybe if it was a MMO or something yes, but seeing as we can't cast spells (or can we?) with weapons or anything in our hands, it just wouldn't be used. Or would it? Not sure.

I guess there isn't really a point to not allow people to do this.

we wouldn't be able to cast spells, however we would have shouts.

I'm talking about H2H being a defensive ability, and actually the 2 small shields idea was more just to connect shields to arm guards.

or it could be useful when you are trying to escape or run from a dragon

and chain / spikes commet above sounds awesome i would totally do that

Hmm. That is true, but it's not like we can spam shouts, as they are most likely going to be a once a day thing, or something like that, but quite honestly I have no clue how it actually will work.

Actually, dual-wielding shields would be quite effective... Firstly, they are capable of severe blunt-force trauma... Secondly, the indeed can have sharpened edges: not razor-esque but fine enough that when chopped or thrusted with, they will draw blood... Also, some shields are equipped with a mounted stake or spike that could be used to thrust into an opponent... You'd be a walking tank...

What would this offer players over a sword and shield approach? I mean besides not doing much damage.

I highly doubt they are a once a day thing, bar the shouts of a grand scale such as Storm Call. Stuff like Force Balance Push and Fire spit would be usable fairly rapidly (once every few minutes depending on the level of shout used).

Like I said, I have no clue. Hopefully they will balance it.

Actually, shield bashing in real life is quite deadly; I don't know why many video games tend to change this, but oh well. In fact because shield bashing is deadly, it is illegal in many of those events where people dress up in armors and fight others using wooden or bamboo weapons.

An interesting and different way to play perhaps? Staggering and stun effects? The ability to truly play "however you want?" And who's to say it would have to do less damage? People break bricks with their bare hands.

What kind of armor are they using if they are using wood and bamboo weapons? People who use plate armor use real blades (not sure if they are entirely sharp), along with other melee weapons and some furniture.

I'm not a fan of the movie 300... So, I hate to use the film as an example, but, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FedyVShEavM&feature=related should sum it all up... Though, it is only one shield  .
