Dual Shields

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:38 pm

Dual wielding is in, I know, but does that mean it will be possible for us to wield two shields at once? Double the blocking power, and twice as many shield bashes. Not to mention it'd be easier to hand two over to an NPC during an escort mission so they won't get themselves killed. Do you think it will be in? Do you want it to be? Apologies if there's a topic already like this.

I'm going to explain how this thread will go. People will say yes, people will then say it hasn't been confirmed, from there people will argue over whether or not it should be in the game. One side says yes with their reasons being shields will be treated like 1 handed objects, and it would be awesome, while naysayers will say it is unneeded and as shields are armor it probably won't let you equip 2. Then more arguing ensues until someone says that it is an unrealistic combat style. From there people talk about how it has been used as a combat style before irl.

In short, this thread is nothing new.

Probably impractical IRL, but what if you could use magic as an offensive option and using the dual wiled shields to become a sort of fire spewing turtle of a warrior?

Shield bashes are devastating IMO.

You can't dual wield and use magic at the same time, you need a free hand

Instead of performing the first step in your post I'm just going to go ahead and +1 this. ;)

Not true, someone can still post the chart that shows dual wielding shields makes you a confused turtle.

Despite a previous thread on the topic, we still don't know. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1164492-duel-wielding-shields/

Hmm...should there be an special knightly "Order of the Confused Turtle" in-game? Y'know, run by someone who acts like they've escaped from the Shivering Isles, looking for other valiant users of the dual shield technique? I mean seriously, let's talk "TES Meets Monty Python" humor of the highest order here. The potential is indeed there...

RPGs are all about choice and consequence. You should be able to choose to dual wield 2 shields even if the consquence was that you weren't as effective as a sword and shield character.

There is one image showing a chart of some possible combinations with Skyrim's dual wielding, and it includes dual wielding shields, however, how accurate said chart is I don't know, in any case, Bethesda, at least, has not explicitly stated it can do done.

Anyway, I'd say dual wielding shiels would likely be rather impractical if it could be done since the only offensive action you could perform would be shield bashing, which I expect won't do a significant amount of damage but will rather be for knocking enemies back, still, from how I understand the dual wielding system to work, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to do it, unless there's some sort of artificial limitation preventing it. It just wouldn't be all that useful.

I guess their motto would be something similar to this:
"The Way of The Turtle is the only way to roll."

I doubt this is in. It could be useful to have two shields if you could point them to different directions in a situation where you need to escape and ranged troops are shooting at you from multiple directions.

Maybe it would work if your PC had enough Dragon Shouts to attack with. Although we don't yet know the precise game play mechanics, it would be reasonable to assume that Dragons Shouts don't require a free hand to use. Downside of course is the use limit (once per day I think) of Dragon Shouts, leaving just shield bash as a means of attack.

I did have the unnecessary violence mod in OB and a character who wielded a stack of light iron shields, which made for excellent throwing weapons. I ran him around for awhile Captain America style, biffing the shields like lethal frisbees at everything- it was quite fun actually and a change from normal combat styles.

Summon army of critters, cast strong buffs on all your companions, put up the two shields and wait it out in the corner :D
