Is dual swords a viable option?

Post » Mon Sep 26, 2011 6:39 am

I have been reading a lot of people's hands on reviews of Skyrim and the general response for dual wielding has been negative.

Since it was announced you could dual wield I have set my mind on creating a dual sword ranger. Yet after reading so much bad response to using two weapons at once I am starting to reconsider. Please could someone that has played with a dual wielder let me know what they think?

I've heard it's a bit dull and repetitive. And you can't block. I'll probably not use it myself.

I haven't played it, but I think you can safely assume it's a fine way to play. They wouldn't include it if it wasn't a viable option. The people who are complaining are for the most part, people who have not played the game. They don't know how it will actually play. It's just assumptions.

Thanks for posting.

I would really like some one who has played to say

"it's awesome. Totally rips through enemies. Feels like how you would want it too."

Or

"I tried using but just didn't like it. You would be better having a single sword and have block"

The main complaint is that you dont attack faster, so it feels pointless to have both hands used up, yet dealing the exact amount of damage , at the same speed, as if you were using a one handed sword. Plus, going to the latter option allows you to block, so dual wielding has been noted to be kind of pointless.

However, it has also been noted that with perks, dual wielding might actually become interesting. For example, if you get bleeding damage for axes, and the sword perks, and dual wield sword and axe, its like having the benefits of both perks pretty accesible without having to switch weapons.

But even then it seems pointless and more of a cool thing :/

I've heard it wasn't as fun as playing with a one handed and shield, other one handed combinations, or just simply one handed. I can tell you, though, that it's not going to stop me from dual wielding. I usually don't dual wield in games but for some reason I really want to do it for my character in Skyrim. She'll be using a mace and sword combination in melee combat.

Nobody played dual swords with perks. I wouldn't put much stock into any of the dual wield impressions until you check it out yourself. I'm definitely dual wielding axes.

It will probably be for those who just want to be concerned with hacking and slashing. DPS mainly. It might have some interesting power attacks and stuff. There also might be some weapons out there that come in pairs and require both hands and it's not labelled as 2 handed weapons.

I, too, am creating a ranger in the D&D fashion, to be equipped with a bow and two swords. I am quite interested to hear opinions on whether or not dual wielding swords is a fun and viable option. I rather doubt it will change my first character, but it's better to know what to expect.

Thats the thing, basing on some peoples impressions, there DPS is the same as with using one one handed weapon, making having two weapons equipped meaningless, cuz it takes the same amount of time before each strike.

You can't do combo power attacks with 1 weapon. That alone is reason enough.

Sounds awesome!

I'm going for two swords. The left hand a scimitar if possible. I plan to use a bow as well. Pluck of some from a far then smash into the survivors with my dual sword combo.

I think my first playthrough will be a practice. Toying with weapons etc.

I just can't see a ranger type character with a shield

I'm going to go with a sword and axe combo and look at the perk trees to see if there is a future for it down the line. If it turns out like archery in Oblivion (I don't like it after awhile) I'll just abandon it and go shield and axe combo. Every game that has allowed dual-wielding I've used it. All the games in the Jedi Knight series, Dragon Age, etc. were all a lot more fun dual wielding.

I dont think the power attack justifies not having a shield or a flamethrower.

I think there should be different effects for choosing those different combinations. For example, if you go dual sword or daggers or sword and dagger, your speed should be beast, because you're all about the flow of slicing and dicing.

Whereas with maces, you're a bit slower, but your wailing away on them, and cause limps, and dropped weapons. Axes have the bleed effect.

We already know that with Magic, you can do one spell while using another. Such as detect life and frenzy, or two of the same. This is where the Magic system uses the dual-wield system better. Even though Fire and Frost can't be mixed, they at least allow both to be used, see? If fire and fire are together though, something even better happens. A spell-combo.

But all in all, I'm glad for what we're getting.
