F3 & NV Dual Weild?

First of all... I'm going to have to say that I wish this poll had an 'I could go either way on it' option.


Dual Wielding is, to be fair, an ability in games which often ends up being broken. The truth of the matter is... I -can- and -have- fired two 9mm handguns with relatively low loss of accuracy. Whatever someone's favorite TV Show/Magazine/Old Person might like to tell them, I know better... when it comes to me. And I know it can be done. In a practical combat situation, though, it would be one of those things where you'd be making a very tactical decision. You give up the ability to aim -precisely-... and instead rely upon depth perception... while also taking away your ability to stabilize the gun as you fire it.

That makes for -difficulty- aiming. But not impossibility... and certainly not this monstrous lack of realism so many folks here have been railing about. If all the purists want to come rag on this question because they feel impotent against the merging of so many genres into other games which aren't traditionally of that genre... I figure it's their choice. They invite disaster, though, when they make ignorant comments such as 'Go play an FPS'... as some folks, like me, who happen to be a BIG fan of RPG's... take offense to this.

I shouldn't -have- to go play a game that svcks... or I don't enjoy... to enjoy a certain feature employed by that genre.

I -like- Dual Wielding. I -like- Dual Wielding when it is done RIGHT. Firearms become less accurate (I would say, for Fallout, depending on your strength, endurance, and skill with them), but you can put a lot of bullets in a person with a pair of nine-mils if you find yourself toting around two of them. Alternately, a PAIR of knives... blades... or any other weapon which is one-handed would be ENTIRELY feasible. In fact, it is historically COMMON.

So I say again. If it were to be done WELL by someone... then sure. I'd love to see it implemented.

If it would up going the way of most FPS-style implementations, however, I would just as soon do without it.

Dual-wielding, so that when you Ironsight, both guns merge into one super SMG!

It would be cool. You could *kinda* dual wield in FO2. Get 2, FNP90's one in each "hand" and burst fire twice instead of just once (assuming you have the AP, of course).

Or actually... Going with my joke, you could actually do that; they don't merge, but you could ironsight your right handed gun, while holding the left hand below it, directing fire from both weapons more accurately :o

I think dual wielding would be ok, and if you don't like to dual wield, then just don't.

Sometimes you don't need to aim very well, i,e, Corridor with a very angry super mutie coming at you, all you care about at that point is pumping holes in him, I doubt you are using iron sights at that point due to the speed loss in back pedaling.

Accuracy should suffer absolutely, but I also think reloading should suffer immensely. Not just double reload time but like 2.5 longer or something.

One thing I would love to see would be a toggle for melee and ranged weapons. Hitting pipboy to swap in the combat knife svcks!

People will hate this one, but a for fun one might be a level 30 perk for turning 2 handed weapons into one handed if dual wielded! Arny did it ! :P

In the end its a game , and games are about fun , and who are we to force our fun on someone else's fun? Small minds do that.

I say no to dual weild. That is like playing Halo. I want to play a different game. If I wanted to dual wield I would play Halo then. That is just me though. Maybe I grew up, or I see this as old now, but dual wielding is not so cool anymore. Or do the kids say, rad, or sick, ah I will never understand what kids say these days anymore LOL. :D

They put a lot of effort into improving weapon behavior. I can't see them turning around and implementing one of the sillier action movie cliches.

Then again, hipfire isn't particularly inaccurate in the game.


Dual wielding's become a bit of a peeve of mine. Not a major peeve. I can enjoy and play games with it. But I prefer its absence.

I wouldn't have minded it in the game to be honest. I'm not that much of a roleplay or realism nut, it would have to be done well and have big drawbacks though, lest it turn into another anti materiel rifle situation.

Something like a toggle to switch between dual and single if you want to use iron sights? Holding two 10mm SMGs though, who needs to aim? =D

Can't understand why this upsets peeps, I think it is a sensible thing to be able to do. It would have to have penalties as everyone is describing , but would be a boon when surrounded or ambushed.
Also it doesen't make ANY sense that you cant dual weild certian close combat items! Any sort of punching item should 100% be dual weild! Its like saying i cant wear two gloves!lol!

Im not a big fan of DW either personally, but i see no reason (in principal) why it shouldnt be added as a perk with high AGI / PER requirements for those who do want it.
I know it would take a lot of work with animations / ammo counters / damage calculations etc.
Not my cup of tea, but i wouldnt have to choose it, no reason others couldnt be catered for though.

And why is it regarded as an FPS feature to have dual-wielding? Dual wielding has been an RPG staple since AD&D First Edition. Dual wielding has been a CRPG staple since the first Wizardry game.

Pirates dual-wield, with a Sabre in one hand and a Blunderbuss in the other.
Ninjas dual-wield, with a Katana in one hand and a Wakizashi in the other.

How can you even call a game an RPG if you can't be a Pirate or a Ninja?

Anyone else find it ironic that of all people, self-proclaimed roleplayers are the ones in this thread most opposed to other people having more choices for the kind of character they want to make? And in a single player game at that.

This is a series to be taken seriously, and anything gimmicky, silly, or over the top clearly has no place in this game.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back into my space suit and chase neo-legionaires with a chainsaw.

The snobbishness on this forum ASTOUNDS me. People arguing against a feature that is optional to the player and fits with a post-apocalyptic environment just because it would "make the game too fps" is beyond mindblowing.

I'm on the development team for the Project Reality mod for BF2. Team members and forum-goers seemed predominantly "purist" back in 2006, wanting every weapon to stay iron-sights only and whenever someone mentioned an EoTech sight or whatnot they'd get pounced on. Now, not only are EoTech sights in the game, nearly every weapon has some form of optic and very few people complain. It's people arguing for the sake of argument and being snobbish for the sake of being snobbish. Dual wielding would not take anything away from this game. That's not to say dual-wielding would fit into Project Reality, as it's not remotely realistic in modern warfare.

As mentioned dual-wielding has been a staple of the RPG genre for decades of years with the release of D&D1, and under certain circumstances is a useful tactic even in real life. This isn't even mentioning that we don't have unarmored mindless feral ghouls attacking us, which is prime territory for, you guessed it, automatic weapons and/or dual wielding of pistol/submachine guns. Not to mention the applications of dual wielding melee weapons, which, unless shields make a comeback, is probably more common than not with one-handed melee weapons in a post-apocalyptic environ.

You named at least one reason others couldn't be catered to. The extra work. Animations, UI, weapon balance, control scheme would need to be changed.

shields would also be a great addition for melee players, might make it more feasible to run up in the fray and lay waste to some fools. Also for blocking projectiles and stings from many of the wasteland creatures.
