1H Dual Wield: Swords vs Maces vs Axes

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:50 am

Sow what is your favorite?

Mine goes to maces. The death blows aren't as cool looking, but there is nothing cooler than a rogue using maces (stems back to WoW for me lol). Also, I think that maces have the best perks, 75% armor ignore is much better than the extra crit or the extra bleed damage, because the worst nightmare for a rogue is a heavy armor wearing 2Her (they hurt, and they take way too many hits).

So what do you think?

Edit: Added daggers, left them out due to no perks in the 1H tree but clearly there is some want for this =)

While I generally enjoy maces over just about anything else. I actually would prefer dual-wielding axes in this. Although, I definitely agree that they (maces) have the best perk. Passive 75% armor penetration>chance to crit or extra bleeding damage. If they had just made the bleed scale with the damage of the axe... *sigh*

How does the bleed work actually? Is there any info on how much damage this actually does or can you noticeably see it at least?

According to the guide, it's 1-3 dmg over 6 seconds or so. So basically a very weak poison effect. Easily the worst of the choices (crit chance is neat, and armor penetration is obviously godsend).

Personally I'd suggest 2x swords, 2x daggers or a sword & dagger setup. Because as dualweilder, you need speed above all. With two swords you can basically stunlock enemies with power-attack dual hits. (and kill anything in one power-hit, but that's another thing). Also.. I think swords have slightly longer reach than 1h axes and definitely maces.

There should be a daggers option on the poll, so please edit.

Personally, I'd say the choice is more complex than just "which is always best." My dual wield Khajiit, for instance, uses swords, and I crit all the time (and I haven't even reached the third rank of the perk!). He's in light armor and focused on stamina growth, so I have to run circles around my enemies and keep on the offensive, which is very fun. My brother, however, uses a dual wield Orc in heavy armor, and he specializes in maces. I'd say that's pretty wise, since he's got Berserk and can take hits better (and probably has higher HP than I do). Axes are a good middleground for dual wielders, since the passive bleeding damage will do well regardless of whether you're a light build, heavy, or somewhere in between. Race also matters, as my brother shows with his Orc. For a stealth build, obviously daggers are better, especially since they work well with certain sneak perks that can turn normal combat into one-sided ninja fights.

I saw someone on the tubez who maxed out the entire one handed tree, including all the weapon perks. At first I thought that was kinda pointless, but now I figure that versatility is nice--not all enemies bleed and not all enemies wear armor, after all.

Edit: poster above beat me to it, but don't swords have the best reach?

Swords.

But I love the dual wield power attack with daggers. So much I'm going to roll a new character especially for that.

I go with an axe AND a mace. Flexibility FTW, ignore armour AND cause bleeding damage. Plus 2 different weapons look better than identical ones.

I have the perks to spare within my build :)
