Dual Wielding: Can We Block?

Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 12:06 am

From a logical viewpoint, the player should be able to parry while duel-wielding, at least with the off-hand weapon. From a TES viewpoint, we are limited (on consoles anyway) with the controls. Like they would have figure out a way to map parrying to a button control. The only thing I can think of is to pull both triggers together and that triggers a parrying maneuver. It would have to be timed with the enemy's attack to be effective. You would not be able to parry spells and larger, two-handed weapons (IMO) would have a better chance of getting through the parry than smaller, one-handed weapons would.

Really, blocking with one or two weapon is silly. Parrying should be possible but not block.

It would make more sense logically to parry with a sword rather than block with it, why do people constantly forget about the difference between these two forms of defense?

Have they said whether you can block whilst holding one sword and having magic in the other hand?

Blocking with a sword doesn't make too much sense, parrying on the other hand..

There is no problem in actually stoping an attack with a weapon, a shield have a better graping being attached to the arm, but this makes you sustain part of the hit. If you parry near your grip (as you should) there is no reason to not be able to do so.

Your argument remembers me one guy years ago, saying that there was not posible to block a kick with an arm, because the leg is stronger than the arm.

parrying the blow aside is better, of course with either with a sword or with a shield, but you can block with a sword (not in game aparently).

It makes sense that u cant because that would just make the use of shields useless. There would be no need for any shields in the whole game which would be a whole bad idea

I like it, it gives a dis-advantage to what already seems to be rather advantageous... If you are duel wielding you can have two fairly strong weapons and can fairly easily kill enemies in Combat and having a block option would just make the game a breeze. If there is no blocking option to it, it would be one for the sake of balance, so if you don't duel wield you loose the advantage of double the damage or the effects of the weapons but gain the advantage of being able to use a shield and be able to block.

Also Magic in one hand and a sword in another doesn't really matter as I'm guessing Shield spells will be returning so a tactical person would place a shield spell in one hand.

What is your source to asume you can double the damage? we didn't know if you can hit at double speed, neither if it really would be a good thing (double fatigue, double probabilities of being staggered...). The only way of having double damage warranted for dual wielding is to attack with both weapons at the same time, which could be avoided preciselly if they make you block pressing both buttons.

Shields have been overpowered in previous games and nobody seem to complain about it. Now aparently a two hander does a significantly increased damage BUT shields can block magic and maybe two handers won't be able to block arrows either, which I find logic, but makes two handers less usefull. So, there is only need to 'balance' things when your favorite play stile could not be the absolutelly and undisputelly better one?

People aren't really buying this, are they? Blocking with a shield is inherently more efficient. It can fend off projectiles, block some magical effects such as frost or fire, and is simply a more efficient tool for withstanding damage due to its design. Being able to simply parry or block a bit while dual-wielding does nothing to make a shield useless and if that's Bethesda's idea of balance, to hell with balance. Bring on the fun. I can personally say I don't think I'll be dual-wielding if all it consists of is spamming the attack buttons until my enemy is dead.

I thought it was a given thats what dual-wielding weapons meant :\ I can't say i was expecting this, but it makes a fair amount of sense and is a good trade-off for people who want to be able to attack with another weapon. Think of dual-wielding as trading the ability to block for the ability to use the time you would blocking attacking. Considering this it will probably be best if dual-wielders stick to light armor and timing their attacks on the enemy and dodging theirs.
