Dual Wielding: Can We Block?

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 4:46 pm

Well, the way I imagine Dual Wielding will work, is that the left trigger would slice with the left weapon, and the right would subsequently attack with the right.

Now, this may or may not be true. But the real question is: Any info on how dual wielders plan to block, if at all?

Was a thread awhile back saying no, can't remember if it had a source or not though.

Really no blocking if I'm holding two weapons?

Seems odd.

Can you give a link?

No block was confirmed. I still want someone to ask him if we can bash with weapons though, at least then we have some form of parry.

It makes sense that u cant because that would just make the use of shields useless. There would be no need for any shields in the whole game which would be a whole bad idea

They could just make shield more effective as they were in Oblivion... especially since you can shield bash and you can use the same statement about how shields shouldn't attack because there would be no need for dual wielding.

People aren't really buying this, are they? Blocking with a shield is inherently more efficient. It can fend off projectiles, block some magical effects such as frost or fire, and is simply a more efficient tool for withstanding damage due to its design. Being able to simply parry or block a bit while dual-wielding does nothing to make a shield useless and if that's Bethesda's idea of balance, to hell with balance. Bring on the fun. I can personally say I don't think I'll be dual-wielding if all it consists of is spamming the attack buttons until my enemy is dead.

Really, blocking with one or two weapon is silly. Parrying should be possible but not block.

I keep seeing that we can't block (parry) with a weapon. I still have yet to see a link to a source though. I have asked in each thread that this comes up, but I never get a response. I am not saying you can, I am just saying that i still couldn't be 100% that you can't.

I completely agree with you, dual wielding is an art of balancing attacks, counters, and parries. If there is no form of defensive maneuvers then the one new aspect of skyrim I was most excited for will take a backseat.

I really can't understand why not. We should be able to block by pressing both triggers or the equivalent on PC for blocking. Leaving an important feature like this out of dual wielding combat is a serious mistake.

It would make more sense logically to parry with a sword rather than block with it, why do people constantly forget about the difference between these two forms of defense?

People seem to forget this is an RPG, if Beth is so concerned with people "getting better" with what they do in game there should be perks for dual wielders for parrying at least if not block. The only reason its not there is because its too difficult for them to implement in time probably. "Streamlining", don't you just love its twenty-first century definition rewrite.

They sound like UK ISP's advertising "Unlimited" broadband.

Exactly. I'm planning on archery, but I hate the concept being totally defenseless without a shield.

What... Kind of pathetic reasoning could they possibly conjure up to not allow SOME kind of defense, with what is essentially TWO METAL STICKS.

What is even the POINT of dual wielding if it doesn't give you an advantage in some way? Thats called balancing the play styles. One way will play differently than the other, and both will have their strong points.

I really hope there's some kind of training, or perk, or SOMETHING that will remedy this. I mean, if there is a perk for shield bashing, surely they would include a counterpart mechanic for dual wielding?

There has yet to be a display as to why you would even want to bother dual wielding weapons either. In all of the demos it looked exactly like a shield with a different graphic, and the swing animations were the same as if you were just using a weapon and a shield anyway.

Have they said whether you can block whilst holding one sword and having magic in the other hand?

Blocking with a sword doesn't make too much sense, parrying on the other hand..

I like it, it gives a dis-advantage to what already seems to be rather advantageous... If you are duel wielding you can have two fairly strong weapons and can fairly easily kill enemies in Combat and having a block option would just make the game a breeze. If there is no blocking option to it, it would be one for the sake of balance, so if you don't duel wield you loose the advantage of double the damage or the effects of the weapons but gain the advantage of being able to use a shield and be able to block.

Also Magic in one hand and a sword in another doesn't really matter as I'm guessing Shield spells will be returning so a tactical person would place a shield spell in one hand.

Being unable to block while dual wielding doesn't make the game more balanced, it ruins the balance. As said before, a sword and shield style of combat actually uses the shield quite heavily for offense. Therefore it wouldn't be fair for a dual-wielding style to completely forsake defense. And for those who are trying to argue that you can't block with a weapon (instead of parrying), take it from someone who actually knows sword technique - YOU CAN. My experience is limited to kendo and katana, but blocking is always an option. A trained swordsman will almost always avoid edge-on-edge contact if possible, instead using the flat of the blade to either deflect a strong blow, or completely stop a weak but quick blow (blocking). Actually blocking an incoming strike with the edge of your weapon will severely damage the blade, however if given the choice between damaging the weapon or losing your life, the choice should be obvious. So perhaps a good compromise in this game would be to allow blocking with dual-wielding or blade-only styles, but a successful block would damage the weapon a lot faster. Ideally, a parrying system would be fantastic as well.
