Dual Wielding Limitations?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:18 pm

After re-reading the Game informer article I have found my self asking the question of what limits are there to dual wielding or what are the speculated limits?
such as can you dual wield spells? can you wield two large one handed weapons? or could you even force your character to be left handed by equipping a shield to the right hand and a weapon to the left? or even can you dual wield shields? thats right dual shield bash baby!

It's been confirmed that you can dual wield spells, not sure about everything else though. I would want to dual wield shields just for the fun of it.

From how I have heard it, it seems that we will be able to dual-wield most one-handed weapons (So, for instance, you could have two swords, a sword and an axe, an axe and a dagger, a shield and a spell, two spells, twin daggers, ect), but that two-handed weapons, such as, say, claymores, would stay non-dual-wieldable. I think the only exception to that might be in a picture I saw for Skyrim. I think it was concept art, but it showed a mage-like person in the mountains with a sorcerers staff in the left hand and a sword in the right. Maybe staffs will be dual-wield enabled?

i'm guessing the limitations probably involve reduced defense.

The limitations *that we know thus far* is reduced defense; you cannot block while dual wielding. Seems odd, considering we should have a Parry option, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
We can dual wield 1 handed weapons, as well as spells, and a combination of the two.

A nice option, if you want to make a more offensive-based character.

I would like to see some tactically based advantage to dual wielding *different* type of weapons.

As of right now, the expectation might be that it will always be preferable do dual wield the same weapon type (i..e two longswords) due to that you would raise you skill at double the rate. And only those looking to do twice the work, would want to level up two different style of weapons.

Having different weapons convey their own advantage could offset this skill leveling penalty if it exists. For example some monsters might be more resistant to bladed weapons, and then the character with an axe+sword is more equipped to deal with a variety of opponents, where as the dual blade wielder might face a more difficult time with such a foe.

Or perhaps different perks on individual weapons (say an axe can trip, while a sword has a higher critical) would also offer a reason to mix and match.

Dual wielding bows has been confirmed

How on earth would you fire them? I don't think that has been confirmed, it makes no sense.

You just have two and one handed weapon skill in Skyrim in addition to bows.
However different weapons have different perks and axes do bleeding damage and maces work better against armor while swords probably do more base damage.
One major benefit with enchanted weapons, you can use one weapon with weakness, debuff or paralyze and one with elemental damage.

In my thread over here http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1171086-lefties-unite-any-official-word/page__st__40

i painstakingly dissected the game play video

in no case is the primary weapon in the left hand.

Shield, daggers, magic staffs, magic casting, open hand are all on the left with primary weapon (axe, sword, mace so far) on the right

check out my post for more info.

Really the bow part is what makes no sense? Not the part about dual wielding Khajiit? ;)

Logically, you would not be able to dual wield some larger weapons such as longswords (Which are often held in 2 hands anyway), but I don't know if they'll have any limitations like that in-game.
