Duck & Cover Books - Is it cheating?

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 1:47 pm

Hi Guys,

So I'm on the fence here. In the current build of New Vegas at Ranger Station Foxtrot there are 2 Duck And Cover books instead of the 1. It's definitely intended by the game designers that there only be 4 of these books in the game total, yet due to a bug or carelessness or what ever theres 5.

So here's the question; If I use that extra 5th book in my character build, am I cheating? Should I use that extra +4 explosives (comprehension!) or drop it on the ground and /disable it in the console? If I do use it do you think I've compromised my build as not being "legit" or "honest?" Let me know what you guys think...

It's a single player game, what does it matter if it's cheating or not? You're not hurting anyone else who is playing the game with it, except for NPCs. :P

Do whatever you want. If you feel that you could use the extra points, read it.

Yeah, I had this happen and forgot about it, until I saw your post.

Mine was the repair book in the boomer area. There were 2, one on top of the other.

Well, you found it legit and honest, so go ahead and use it. You are not exploiting it to get more.

I mean, with all the bugs in the game, your character is likely not perfectly legit anyways, from what they intended, and you just do not know it. lol.

Currently we're cut off from one of the "Dean's Electronics" books so it works out even in the end.

Since explosive are pretty underpowered, I wouldn't sweat it.

When I say legit I mean that I don't want my character to be the product of cheating. I take a lot of pleasure in carefully planning out my builds to maximize potential for the style character I'm making. As a result I would want my character build to be, in a perfect world, totally plausible in the game as if there were no bugs. Basically, I want my character to be totally recreatable without cheating or manipulation.

It sounds like your concern isn't with social approval (because who'd know but you?) but with your feelings about the integrity of your character build. Personally, I'd just use the book, but if you're uncomfortable about it at all, take the extra one and display it in your Novac Apartment/Lucky 38 Suite as a trophy.

its not cheating because you havent manipulated or modded that game in any way, its a design fault not a glitch, i wouldnt beat your self up about it to much, its just a a book after all

Yea, I think I'll end up using the skill book. It's in the game naturally, right? Even if it's 'natural' occurrence is a bug, it's there.

My real problem here is deciding whether or not to play the game as it is or as it was intended. There's no debating that the extra copy of the book is there from a designer making a mistake, but whether I should take advantage of this because technically it's in the game or play as I know the game was intended to be with four skill books per skill is the question. After all, the fifth science book is a reward for a quest, so this is obviously intentional that there be five, but I am pretty certain there were only meant to be four explosives books.

You can't actually play the game as intended with the mountains of bugs, errors and flaws in it

If you really care that much about "cheating" in a single player game then you probably should just ignore the extra book and pretend it isn't there or just disable it

I don't see why you are making such a big deal over this tbh

Playing it as it was intended is already impossible until certain major glitches are fixed. I imagine the designer didn't mean to make "Oh My Papa" unable to be completed if you just happen to chat with some random Great Khan elsewhere in the world before you start that quest.

What we have is the game as designed. Might as well take the good with the bad.

No, you're not cheating. That little addition granted by those books isn't even felt in this game.

Is it cheating to go into the GECK and make your BB Gun do 900 DAM? Most people will say no. So having two Skill Books spawn instead of one, that's just a blessing.

Repeat after me: There is no such thing as cheating in a non-competative, single player game.

You are not gaining some unfair advantage over another player, therefore it is not, and cannot be cheating. If you want to use it, use it. If you don't, don't. In the end anyway, 3 or 4 extra skill points will mean absolutely nothing to anyone anywhere. Including possibly yourself.
