Duel swords should be stored on the back, Bethesda

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 6:59 am

The storage of anything on the back, including sword and shield, is entirely impractical except for traveling.

If anything, I'd like to see a mod that removes back storage entirely.

Well, isn't traveling (exploring) at the core of the game?

And to add to the OP, sheaths would be nice too... CDProjecktRed got that one right.

I'll add my voice to those with disappointment. Even if I only use 3rd person for vanity shots of my character, and play in first person,
it just feels better knowing that my other sword has a sheath.

I don't want to break my game with mods, but that fix seems like a good one for the immersion.

Currently your one-handed sword is displayed on your left hip. When you equip two swords, though, it still only displays the one sword on the hip.

Or at the very least, two swords at the hip. Make it happen, Bethesda! ;)

Nothing should be stored on the back. It just isn't practical. And I'm talking real life here. It make look cool, but it's just totally impractical. The extra sword should just be on the right hip. Even real life "greatswords" or Scottish Claymores as they are known, are sheathed at the hip.

Tell you what, I'll accept that if they make a "ready" sheath mode and a "travelling" sheath mode which takes time to switch between.

In an emergency, you can draw from a travel configuration, but doing so takes a LOT longer and puts you at risk for self injury.

Realistically, this is not feasible. Unless the weapon you're trying to unsheath no longer than the length of your forearm (see: Daggers), you'd have such a hard time getting your weapon(s) out of its(their) scabbard(s), you'd be impaled before you got anywhere near ready to do battle.

That being said, in a world where giant dragons fly around using magic, there exist talking lizards, cats, big green people, elves, the ability to kill with your voice, and so many more, I'd like the back-scabbard way more than I'd like one weapon being unsheathed, while your off-handed weapon teleports from hammerspace into your left hand.

Shields on back, too. I know my arm would be damn tired if I had a big hunk of metal/wood/hide/demonic material constantly attacked to it.

I don't know about the back, but dual wielding should definitely let you see both weapons instead of the cheap animation they released. It's one of my few qualms with this game.

Swords on the back aren't feasible in real life. Think about it f you are using one or two long swords that are longer than your arm you could never pull it out of the scabbard on the back. http://www.shopwushu.com/pages.php?pageid=13 I am only 5.7" and thus the ideal Straightsword Blade Length would be 30.5"; whereas as an ideal Broadsword Blade Length would be 28.5". My shoulder to fingertip length is only 32". Bending my elbow to reach behind me cuts that in half. I just don't see it coming out of the scabbard with any efficiency?!? But, I could be wrong.

For the record, I don't know if it is true with all weapons, but if you are dual-wielding, you can see both weapons strapped to your hip if both weapons hare favored and assigned a hotkey.
I just did that with the nightingale blade and a steel dagger, and I can see both on my character.

This actually kind of annoyed me when i noticed it. The fact that one of your weapons disappears if you're dual-wielding when you sheath it, and then re-appears when you draw it made it feel like they didn't put enough thought and effort into this game afterall. And then, to top it all off, i decided to use a staff and realised when you sheath it that disappears completely aswell.... Really?

I never knew sheathing weapons has such a large impact on game quality. Hey wait! In most games you can't even sheath! That must mean most games must be really bad!

Are we running out of new and interesting things to complain about? Seriously, I would rather they invest more time in adding new quests and areas than spending it on something so tedious and minor. Yes it is a little silly that your offhand weapon just appears out of thin air but it's nothing that's going to take away from the overall experience in any way.

The looks of a character is a super-major issue, because each player always sees it first of all and every time.
Either devs played Dark Messiah oM&M too much and forgot about 3rd person mode, or added the feature a month before the release.

I simply have to bump this topic... the fact that the left-handed weapon is never equiped is the single reason I never went to duel-wielding.... I could care less about not being able to block... but this.. is just so ugly! please fix this Bethesda!

I agree. Dual-wield animations could get a lot more of work. Both sheating/unsheating and more varied powerattacks.

They should be on the back, inverted, so they're drawn from underarm position

Isn't the storage of swords on your back something that looks 'cool' but really isn't as feasible as a scabbards affixed to the belt?

The whole duel wielding thing is an impractical, silly fantasy trope which I didn't think I'd ever see in TES as it always took a more 'realistic' approach to combat in the past (no flash air streaks behind weapon swings either). Sword and dagger, yes; sword and buckler, yes - but swinging two bloody great pieces of metal with abandon just isn't practical, balance wise, defensive wise and offensive wise. So the swords could be pulled from your *blanking bleep* for all I care.

'ready' is having your sword out. If it was on a sling on your back it would take no more than a couple of seconds to swing it off and draw. It's take maybe a second longer to draw that way than from your hip; and I can't see any situation in which that second would cause you harm other than if you managed to point the hip-drawn sword in the right direction and allow your enemy to run on to it, and couldn't do it otherwise.

I don't care where the second weapon is stored at, but as long as it can visually be seen somewhere instead of disappearing. I'd love to see a feature that puts your shield on your back instead of always being stuck in your hand.

Only weapons that should be strapped to the back are daggers for the purpose of ease of stealth.

For larger weapons (still, the purpose would be to make stealth easier), it would be feasible to have a weapon attached to a sling and slung over the back. In this case, the most reasonable way of drawing the weapon would be to grab the entire thing (sheath and blade) off of your back and pull the sheath away with your left hand as you draw it with your right (or the inverse for left-handers).
