Duel Wielding Shields?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:34 pm

Duel Wielding Shields may not be a practical matter, but it is an interesting one. Assuming you may place a shield in either hand and play either a left handed/right handed character, also assuming that shield bashing will cause damage to enemies, will you try Duel Wielding Shields?

Now that we know spears will most likely not be in the game (not at the moment anyhow), this could be a fun gameplay mechanic for the hardcoe player. Playing a Brute that knows only to smash sounds like a hoot. So what is your opinion on this? are you hoping that this is a possibility, or do you already believe it will be? Do you want Duel Shields on your brutal warrior?

EDIT: Read up on bucklers and their uses if you think this is silly or unlikely to be used in real life.

It would expand our gameplan choices and that's what skyrim seems to be aiming for :D

Two shields xD that would look kinda lame, and not very practical in battle.

There are some points in life where you just have to say "[censored] common sense", and punch people with shields.

I vote yes.

Is that even possible

I'm guessing you would do damage by Shield Bash

I doubt Bethesda will sit and make code just to forbid you to dual wield shields (because, since each hand is equipped individually, that's what it would probably take for dual wielding shields to not be possible)

From there on, I just can't see what people like in that thought. But more power to them. Weird use of the word hardcoe though..

Haha "Breaking Immersion" seems to be a big topic on this forum now. So much so that people seem to just say it about anything they disagree with.

How would the ability to equip two shields break someone's immersion into the game? If anything, it seems like if you clicked on a second shield and it was like "Nope, you're not allowed to do that. It's impossible to hold two shields in real life.", that would be a little more 'immersion-breaking'.

That being said, I don't care.

wow, some quick answers lol. At the very least it would be good for giggles.. probably wont be very good against dragons though. But you know there are some people out there that would want the bragging rights of saying "I have a level 50 character who only uses shields as weapons" and that is where my use of the world hardcoe comes from. It takes a serious player to make a commitment of duel shields.

Completely agree - I can hold 2 shields in real life - it just wont get me very far.

Unless there's some completely absurd and inexplicable constraint hard-coded into the game to prevent that, you should be allowed to.

Please, Todd. Allow me to play as an armadillo shield-bashing juggernaut and I will forgive you for every single weapon you've previously removed from the series.

I expect that there will be. they talk about the equiping system being based on what you put on your two hands (thinking of ways to create race's with multiple hands once I get the KIT)
so it is logical that you could equipt two sheilds, and with perks we'll probably see a sheild strike (as is common in games that have both shields and feats). so it would be amusing to have a char build which fights defensively.

I don't think we'll be able to dual wield shields.

I don't see why not. I don't see the practical use other than running a gauntlet or something but it is easily coded in so I don't see why not.

This.

Even if it isn't, I'm sure it'll be a day one mod as this subject seems to be extremely popular on the interwebs.

Heck, it was the first question about duel wielding whenever it was confirmed.

I agree. Ive always wanted to play something in a sandbox/open world like a beserker from Gears of War or a Tank type of character that simply bashes through enemies. I've always thought the RPG moniker of a "Tank" was misnamed due in part that an actual tank is an armored smashng vehicle that fires missles/ammunition. An RPG tank can slash/smash/stab and is only called one because of its high resistance to damange and its (typically) larger size. A duel wielding shield character would be the very essence of a tank.

They would be great for defending yourself while running away from foes that when you are in way over your head.

Using 2 shields would just be cumbersome, in real life if you hold a tower shield you got some protection, add another and now you are fumbling around trying to keep balance not utilizing the shield properly allowing for gaps in your defense.

I vote for DUAL wielding shields but the 2nd shield should add 0 stats and decrease the armor and block of the 1st shield by 20%

So if you had a shield that reduced the damage you take by 50% each time you block and gives you an armor rating of +20 then when you add the 2nd shield you should only block 40% damage with the shield and it should only offer 16 in armor rating, also using both shields at the same time should be impossible, or they should get in the way of each-other leaving you fumbling backwards after slamming them together increasing creature critical chance on you by 100% for 5 seconds, and each critical strike should increase damage 10 times.

So bring on dual wielding shields.

I've changed my mind, my first character won't be an Imperial with a longsword, it'll be an Orc with double shields.

I dont understand why, and I dont agree.

Its entirely possible, does not break immersion, so yes definitely.
