Duh! Moments during mod installs

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 8:20 am

I figured since I am in middle of tweaking my load order I'd chat. What crazy things have you done that has made you want to imitate donkey kong with you computer? (For those of a younger generation, pick up your computer and throw it at a passerby).

I, while on painkillers decided, this would be a neat moment to reinstall oblivion and make darn hootin sure my load order was right. Also to clean out old mods. So after deleting 20 gigs worth of mods, and reinstalling fcom and all my other mods, I ctd'd on start up. So, since I am still feeling kind of painless I decide, hey, since this is screwy, I might as well delete everything and try again! (Another 20 gig worth of mods down the can)

On my third attempt, not feeling so hot, I scratch my head, and say Oh gosh darn it, I think I know what I did wrong! I didn't rtfm fcom properly and didn't have the latest patch for my unofficial oblivion/si! *bangs head against wall* So, now as I am still installing 20 gigs worth of mods, and weeping at my disk defragmenter, I ponder the evils of touching my oblivion install while under the influence.

This makes me want to post the instigator of my most frequent fix responses this weekend...

Edit:

The duh-est mod installation ever on my part is installing the RTT 3.0.1 update without first installing RTT 3.0 first (I was using OBMM then, if I had been using BAIN I would've noticed I was short a few hundred files.)

The duh-est mod installation problem I have had nag me for the longest is installing the Dark UI loading screens for two different quest mods and not figuring out how to get the Dark UI texture replacers to load. (I failed to notice that the timestamp on the BSAs for the quests were more recent than the loose loading screen textures. YAY! for OBMM Reset BSA Timestamps feature, BOO...for my ignorance.)

Yeah, I just got to thinking, another thing I screwed up was on wyrebash. I had the latest um version 175 file, but I didnt install 180 fix (going from memory on version numbers). I am thinking that might have had something to do with my problems as well.. In my defense I was also watching old future-rama episodes

One time it took me hours to work out why the distant land wasn't showing up, or what mod was causing it. The problem? It was turned off in the menu.

My duh-est moment was installing my first mod which was just a simple ESP file. I kept trying to drag and drop it into the "Data Files" window that you access from the default Oblivion launcher. It took me two days to figure out that "Data" was a folder. :lmao:

 Hey! In my defense, it was only a month or so after the game's release, and I knew next to nothing about mods. This one also didn't have a readme.

Four years later, I think I handle installation a little better.

I've forgotten to install OBSE even after all of the mods said it had to be installed several times.

While I was modding Kragenir's Death Quest I also had Unique Landscapes and several compatibility patches for it in my load order. After I changed something in the mod, I saved it and tried to load the game. It crashed before it reached main menu.

I thought I screwed up something big time, panicked and tried looking for the problem but couldn't find anything. Then I found out that when I saved the mod it moved the mod to the end of my load order list, making it load later than the compatibility patch it relies on, which caused the crash.

After grabbing a new PC a six months ago I decided to reinstall Oblivion and all my mods, so I set about the FCOM setup at first. I got Fran's, OOO, WC, and FCOM down no problem. I spent a bit of time looking through the different MMM plugins that are downloaded separately (MMM Horses, Durzog Resource, Farm Animals, and the necessary Patches at the time), stuck them all into an overarching OMOD, bashed things up, started my game, and realized I forgot the actual MMM download... it wasn't hard to fix, but somewhat embarrassing considering the amount of time I had spent with mods :P

I'm pretty sure I installed the patch before I had installed Oblivion, too.

Uhm .. most embarassing for me is that when I first started using mods, it took me forever to figure out I could actually overwrite the texture/meshes folders. I use to copy and paste everything in those folders over to the data folders. Because "overwriting stuff is bad."! (Despite the fact almost all instructions told you to do this.)

Installing FCOM and after 2 years of using it, I always wondered why several monsters and armor were missing textures(invisible, etc). It was found out that I never installed Frans 500MB portion of the mod and only the 4.5MB portion.

this is relatively off the topic of the post...but sort - in a sense - on topic...
I noticed I have a few mods that tell me to install everything, including the readme, to the data folder...and I am curious to know why they want you to put the readme there? just for safe keeping?

oh, but to keep things ontopic as well, when I first started modding and got my first mod that had it's own original meshes and textures, I told it not to merge the folders....

Sometime you need the ReadMe for INI tweaking instructions and walkthroughs, and maybe the mod author get annoyed over people making mistakes such as those posted in this thread, maybe...

I always hold onto my readmes...but (I wonder if this causes any problems) I never put the readme files into the data folder. I mean, if the read me is in a .ini format, then OFCOURSE I am not as stupid enough to not put that there, but I have never seen an .ini readme, they were always .txt so I figured it is just plain out silly to put them there.
ofcourse, I have all my mods twice on my computer, once in the so called "temporary" location, and then ofcourse, in my Data folder

Or~ if they have their own folders, it just makes it so it is readily available to you rather than search through your archive of downloaded mods.
