But no, concluding that would mean that Nextmastermind didn't want to offend him, and why for the love of God would he conclude that when he oh so likes being offended? This kind of people only does damage to gay people who are not idiots because what was basically a clear message of support for gay people got swiftly and obviously brainactionlessly reinterpreted as an offence aimed at gay people and that risks forcing the person who showed the support in the first place to stop giving a rat's ass and stop showing support for gay people because, obviously, why would he/she even try when he/she is going to get that kind of response? I'm not saying that anyone should stop showing support for gay people I'm saying that these idiots are the ones likely to cause some people to stop showing the support, and again, them being idiots has nothing to do with them being gay. I thought those two points were obvious from the rest of my post but what happened to the OP is case-in-point that you can never really be sure what will someone conclude from what you say, no matter how obvious what you actually mean is.

You did try to make it right. However, I don't consider it fair to say "Sally did wrong first, therefore all wrongs after that are irrelevant because Sally started it all".

I would be curious, but if it went against the concerns expressed by someone else I would have tried to be more discreet about it. Although, hindsight is 20/20.


EDIT: As for advice I would say just give Sally space and see if she isn't mad at you later. What I would do for Timmy is once Sally has cooled down tell her the meaning of the lyrics and how it wasn't supposed to offend anyone etc. Then Sally blabbermouth will do her job (hopefully) and tell Timmy.

Indeed. I was a bit confused when Sally said that must be what offended him and that he must be gay. But I went with it because I can see how someone can twist it to make it an insult.

To be honest, you probably dealt with the situation better than I ever could. If Sally started to shout obscenities at me about that I would have just told her to [censored] off, which of course would only makes things worse. You are absolutely correct in my eyes when you say that you have the right to know who is pissed off at you. In fact if anything it's more important to know who's pissed off at you than why they are pissed off I think, means you know who to be a bit more careful in dealing with. Now in regards to her assumption that Timmy is gay, it's rather stupid to think that. Maybe he just hates the stereotypes/stigma attached to being gay.

All in all, I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. What's been done is done and it could have been much worse than it could have been better I think

I dont understand how she got him being gy from that song, he could just as easily have been a guy who hated people bringing up the... less noble things America has done, I dont know how from all that she somehow concluded he was gay, or he could have been a guy who didnt see the song for what it was and was pro gay rights or something.
