A Dungeon of Extreme Difficulty

Post » Tue Nov 23, 2010 5:45 am

I feel it would be amazing if there was some sort of Super Dungeon.

I'm talking about a Dungeon that is of epic proportion:
It would have monsters at level 40+,
Traps and Puzzles galore,
An epic boss,
and some rare artifact that is of great value.

I think it would be great to have some sort of area that is like:
"This area is for the elite, if you're not properly equipped for this challenge, you won't make it."

Thoughts?

Lol, I DMed an Undermountain campaign a couple years ago. My players were begging me to DM it at first, then when it was over, they never wanted to play it again. I had to 'cheat' the dice rolls so they didn't die once or twice. :P

It was a giant, very difficult dungeon. One of the hardest pre-made dungeons I've seen.

There was another one. It was an epic level 3.5e dungeon that I swear was designed to kill your PC's... quickly. :P I can't remember what it was called though...

if one is not in you better believe I will mod one in (the reward in the end will be a gun you use as a club)

For some reason I'm imagining something like the Cave of Ordeals from Zelda. Except not so arena-ish. Basically a dungeon thats only there to test your mettle

This would be awesome. Especially if you could fast travel to/from the final chamber with safe containers and use it as a home. Ooh, and the rest of the dungeon could respawn (not the boss and final artifact).

I liked Sundercliff Watch from the Mehrune's Razor quest, but the thing that annoyed me was that I had to return to town like 1564531867845465432187 times to sell all that sweet loot, and the dungeon was a little confusing/confining at times. A "super dungeon" should be pretty straightforward in my opinion, and there should be some way to exit at each level or something so that you can sell loot.

This is an Elder Scrolls game. It has to cater to a mainstream audience of kids who usually play action games, so unfortunately epic dungeons are a no no. The dungeons have to be fairly easy, well-lit so they're not too scary, and not too long in case the target audience gets frustrated and fed up.

I also liked Sundercliff Watch. However, I don't agree that if there is a "super-dungeon" it should be streamlined. I feel a huge dungeon like that would be complex and confusing.

Todd has said that there will be dungeons that take 1-2 hours to get through... and that some will be too difficult for you character to handle at certain times. Not sure if I'd use the word "extreme" to label them... but still sounds good to me. ;)

I voted yes. I was just being very cynical.

If it was an actually challenging dungeon, not just a super long one with enemies that have tonnes of health.

I want to see at least two or three epic style dungeons, that take hours to explore, with a great deal of challenging obstacles and enemies with appropriate loot to boot.

My ideas would be:

1. A massive, haunted mansion/castle type setting....something creepy yet challenging...Castlevania-esque! Many, many rooms, halls, and floors.

2. A sprawling, sunken/underwater city of some kind.

3. A long forgotten, natural subterranean cave with many winding passages and areas that open up into a strange location, something like The Descent+Land of the Lost.

4. Super dungeon. A dungeon that has nothing but terrifying and powerful enemies. Discordant/chaotic landscape that changes every time you enter, has numerous randomized "boss" style fights.

5. Hall of Memory: Final chamber inside the super dungeon, randomly spawns a boss version of famous or infamous people/creatures of Elder Scrolls lore as challenging boss fights.

If there is a dungeon like this i would like it to have puzzles, plenty of mobs, unique loot, at least two boss fights, a play time of maybe 3 hours so i have to find a nice quite day to commit to the task, and most of all... GIANT TREASURE ROOM AT THE END! maybe guarded by a dragon maybe two hahaha that would be an epic fight. Also the puzzles i would like to be hard enough that i would have to pull out a piece of paper to plan them out like that one with the gates in the Alyied (however it is spelled) ruin in OB that you had to solve to get across the watery chamber. Any way love the idea would be an awesome playing esperiance.

The Monsters inside could be a kind of Spidercliffracer which will anoy you with its sounds through the hole dungeon 1 hour and more... guess I would run in fear on the first sight. :bolt:

The Endboss should be this Akulakhan thing from Dagoth Ur chamber a replica built from a faction we dont know yet... guess this would be challenging and it would spawn ofc Spidercliffracer which can perma stun you while traps beating you to death. :cold:

It's definitely one of the things I miss seeing in single player games. A decent amount of quality "end-game" content made to challenge you once you are at the top of the game. Anyone who has done Icewind Dale's Trials of the Luremaster, Baldur's Gate 2's Watcher's Keep, Ocarina of Time's master quest, Blue Dragon's shuffle dungeon, Tales of Vesperia's Labyrinth of Memories. Those are the kind of thing I want to see!

It would be nice to have extremely high level dungeons in the game, and you have to develop your character to 70s level to be able to conquer them.

In other hand I want mid-level dungeons that you encounter early in the game, and have to retreat, or run like hell in them to the other side, to reach phat-lute, but later in the game return to them and laugh at your newbie actions in that area, as you wipe them out with monster bodies.

I think it would be cool to structure a dungeon after the cave of wonders from aladdin. Have two or three pieces of a key to summon the entrance to the dungeon. This task should not be quest related at all though. Keep it out of the journal. Have the player hear a few rumors about a mysterious place full of treasure that can only be opened by a unique key. Then, have the pieces scattered around skyrim, and set up clues to their locations. The dungeon would be divided by traps and high level enemies unique to only that dungeon. And at the end have a huge treasure room guarded by some powerful guardian. Take the precious treasures and escape as the place falls apart around you. I think that would be pretty awesome.

EDIT: Excuse the poor grammar, im tired.
