Dungeon-Master-esque RP?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:33 am

So, yes, I have been lurking around on this site for some time now, (one year if you want to be precise), and I hear all these people talking about Dungeon RP's and how they have been so cool and stuff. But...I've never seen one made. I've never seen somebody come up and say, hey lets get this on paper now and get this sh** started. So, that's what I'm trying to do, develop a DM-esque RP. I am, in no way, trying to dominate this and trying to be the leader. I am simply starting a conversation thread, not wanting to be a leader in any way. I am simply trying to stimulate discussion between some people to figure out how this might work.

I myself have little to no RP experience having to do with DM. I just straight up follow what people tell me, which eventually put me on a linear path of plot. The only time I ever experienced a DM RP was Chriso's "What Lies Beneath", and we weren't able to even get to the cave part as it died shortly before anyone entered.

So...anyone?
I myself have no input right now at all.

Try searching for The Cave, if it's still in the archives that was a good example of what you're looking for.

The problem with this type of rp is that on a forum there is a lack of instant feedback so you either need multiple people to cover things so that you don't end up waiting 2 - 3 days for the host to tell you what happens next, or you start to leave the genre as people need some freedom to advance the plot if it is to continue without constant input from the host.

I've made two dungeon master type RP's. One -- Unknown Adversaries, which was popular, had alot of good people in it, but died before the end of the first thread because I couldnt get onto the forums for months -- the same thing happened when I re-made it.

The second, The Tower, I had alot of good idea's for it, riddles and puzzles and all manner of thing's i've never tried or come across in an RP before, but unfortunately it didnt even get past the 3rd page.

Now i'm sticking to what i know best.

Zombies.

I'd love another crack at U.A though.

If I might suggest something: Don't do it. Of course, this whole reply will be strictly opinionated, but I thought I might like to put this out there.

This type of roleplay functions well if EVERYONE is a solid RPer, is active, and has lots of creativity, and of course, a good leader. The second the wrong person gets thuroughly involved and ruins it, the RP is basically unsalvageable.

These RPs are very common... and let's face it, you (the leader) can't possibly keep spitting out plot twists until the end of time. If the leader fails, everyone goes down with the ship.

And based on my experiences, these are just flat out boring.

I have two words for you. TES Bioshock.
