Dungeon Poll

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 5:19 am

Hello again fellow Forum goers :)
I'm curious to see everyone's opinion on Dungeons in Skyrim, so I created this poll. Wasn't that nice of me? :P
Personally I think the more types of Dungeons the better and most of them should be Average with some Epic ones strewn about.
Discuss away!

Besides those mentioned there should be mines, and beneath the cities sewers and catacombs.
Lets not neglect above-ground either and have some towers, forts and ruins to explore, and lets have some castles with dungeons too.
Most should be small-average size with a few large ones, but no big for bigs sake, let there be some reason to their size, layout and inhabitants.

Dungeon length should vary, I don't see why anyone would want them all generally the same length.

Surprisingly, I actually don't want to see falmer ruins. (Even though I am praying for a lot of explanations of the falmer to be show up in physical forms somewhere in the game.) All the rest of those options are bound to show up though. If not "Dragon Ruins" then ruins built by people who worshiped the dragons in the old days of skyrim.

I don't expect there to be loads of 2 hour long dungeons because of the amount of time it takes to develop unique and interesting ruins something Bethesda have said they are working on this time, however I would like 10 or so of the 130 dungeons to be around 2 hours, thats less than 10%. 50 or so to be around the hour mark. 50 to be around 30 minutes and the rest to be smaller.

In an ideal world I would like all of them to be huge but that isn't going to happen and if it did maybe we would lose appreciation for the trully epic dungeons and realistically not all ruins in the real world are huge they vary in size and they should in Skyrim too.

I want Dwemer, Falmer and Draconic the most with a few Aylied and imperial ruins dotted around.

I just hope there are loads of interesting puzzles inside of them that require intelligence to overcome!

I voted for all of the above and mostly average with some epic ones.

Why so little love for Ayleid ruins?

I too would like to see some sort of referance to the myths surrounding the Falmer, I've been studying the lore of the Elder Scrolls since 2009 and I have found absolutely nothing about them except what is stated on UESP wiki.

According to Todd, however, half will be small (I believe he specifically stated 15 minutes.).

Although it basically fits the general idea of a prison, a weird hospital, more specifically a "Narrenturm" or any other asylum/creepy bastion where they lock up (insane) people to rot is a place that, after some of my latest experiences in a recent game, seems to do the trick very well.

Thanks for the info :)

Someone else should confirm that, first, however. I remember Todd specifically mentioning dungeon sizes, but I could be wrong on the specific information.

What Beth is giving us is perfect. 130+ dungeons with a mix of small, medium, large and epic dungeons. OP, you should add more options to the second poll question.

All of the above except Ayleid and Daedric ruins. They belong in Cyrodiil and Morrowind, not Skyrim.
While I voted for Falmer ruins I only want to see one or two ruins for them, I want them to remain very mysterious.

And personally I'd love to see lush caves with moss, plants and waterfalls in them. Butterflies and fireflies would make them even better.
Mossy caves have been confirmed though, so, not worried in that department.

I am very interested in Ayleid lore, I guess the reason people don't really like them is because they were disappointed in the ruins since they were essentially the replacement for Dwemer Ruins, that and it gets annoying to see the same dungeon layout twenty times in a row lol.
I think there should be a few Ayleid ruins scattered throughout the south, near the Cyrodiil border, but the focus should be on Draconic Ruins since Dragons are the primary focal point of the game.

Well, all of them and there are a few other I would like to see, among which :

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Castle_Karstaag of Frost Giants
Ship wrecks
Border walls
Warden bridges
Sewerage Systems
Mines
Barrows and Tumuli
Forgotten secret passages that lead to a nobleman's castle
Towers
Haunted houses and manors
Witches convents whose inhabittants have left and have been replaced...
Dunmer ancestral tombs near the Eastern border
Dunmer strongholds near the Eastern border (like the ones with the Propylon chambers)
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:36_Lessons_of_Vivec,_Sermon_36, with remnants of the clockwork dreughs, once the minions of Sotha Sil, off shore, under deep water
Vampire icy manors owned by the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Immortal_Blood, under icy lakes
Ruins that belonged to extinct human races mentioned in http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Adabal-a, among which the Nede and the Men-of-'kreath. I don't know how many of these races come from Skyrim.
Riekling settlements
Grahl settlements
Perhaps some open air "dungeons" such as a cromlech with Centaurs or Minotaurs or Udyrfryktes, or such as a Spriggan settlement in (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Special_Flora_of_Tamriel?) trees.

Also, some particular places such as
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Pocket_Guide_to_the_Empire,_1st_Edition/Skyrim with its huge irregular blocks of porphyry
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Saarthal
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Arena:Labyrinthian
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Shadowkey:Fearfrost_Caverns
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Shadowkey:Lakvan%27s_Stronghold
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Shadowkey:Crypt_of_Hearts_I

I hope I haven't been too enthusiastic...

A very nice list you put together there, I appreciate the enthusiasm :P
Ahhh Labyrinthian, I have never played Arena myself but from what I hear it was a really long and mystical dungeon and I would love to see it in Skyrim although as long as it isn't just copy-pasted with an HD makeover, I once read a thread about the Labyrinthian being in Skyrim and one of the posts said something like; "Reimagine it, don't port it" so yeah, pretty much that. :)

I'm glad the majority of us agree that Ayleid ruins were considerably less exciting than the other dungeons :)

Just to make sure I really have shown enthusiasm... Here are some other places I would love to see, though I am not sure all of them would deserve to be named dungeons.

Lighthouses
Deserted Farms
Bandits'settlements
Akaviri Ruins
Disused Imperial Chapels
Smuggler's haven
Stalhrim tombs
The interior of a (really?) extinct volcano
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Dawnstar:Bestiary settlements
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Dawnstar:Gehenoth settlements

And I recently found two more precise locations mentioned in Dawnstar. I never played that game, but these two ones have names suggesting they could deserve the "dugeon" name

This was because they were all one and the same. Make fewer Ayleid ruins, make them in such a way that it could be believable they were once inhabitted, and don't seem to have been built for the sole sake of harming the loot-thirsty adventurer, put remanants of the Ayleid culture in it, perhaps even alive Ayleids, make it more challenging and more unique, so that one could really contemplate and love their elegant architecture, put some rare artifact in the deepest areas of an immense pallace, protected by very nasty traps, and I'm sure everybody would LOVE the few or even lonely Ayleid ruins that could appear...

This sounds like a great idea, sort of like how the Goblin lairs had kitchens, storerooms, prisons etc. it made them feel like the Goblins actually lived there, rather than just being cannon fodder for your arrows and spells.
