dungeon siege III

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 4:24 am

As an ARPG fan this game has been on my radar. Haven't played the previous installments so I'm not sure what to expect.

So the game developed by obsidian under square enix?

The game looks cool but w/ the 4 predetermined classes I feel like the game will feel similar to the old "gauntlet" games.

Anyone else been following this title ? I believe the release date is 6/21.

I saw some pics and read some small articles and although I'll keep my eye on it I'm not sure about the gameplay and levelling system.

I really liked the first two, so if the third's anything like them, I'll get it and play it cooperatively with a friend and have a blast with it. If not, then that's a shame.

Me, me! They want to make it more action-y, which is good in my book, and it's made by bloody Obsidian. So there shouldn't be anything to keep me from CRITICAL ERROR

I really liked the setting and style of the the first one. Ya the story was cheesy, but I liked it. The second one lost all of the charm of the first, so I havent paid much attention to Dungeon Siege 3.

I played 1 and 2 quite a bit and enjoyed them. I'm sure I'll check out this one.

I saw the demo on DS3 and it looks good. The only problem I have is that you can't create your own character, your stuck with 4 default characters that you can thankfully customize, I can overlook that small detail.

The game isn't complete Hack and slash, there are some tactics that you will need to use or you will get swarmed and killed by the enemies.

I still don't find that very interesting. TES has just sharpened my taste and I really only like open world rpgs any more.

Dungeon Siege I and its expansion had numerous armors and weapons, character customization, grenade launchers, flamethrowers, killer chickens, disco, lost pyramids in an endless desert (which I found not once but twice), and the Pit of Despair (which I navigated not once but twice). There's no way Dungeon Siege III will be able to match that, but I do believe it can be a very good game.

I'd want to know more about character creation and the leveling system first.

I played the first Dungeon Siege. There was no plot, not even anything much to dress up the fact that it is a dungeon crawler. The NPCs don't speak much, and the lack of respawning enemies in a game that relies on kill-based XP really crimped character leveling.

Now, consider Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony for the PSP (developed by Supervillain Studios). Buggy, but enjoyable. Characters are limited to three pre-made characters with upgradable skills and different class progression branches. NPCs have more to say, and they properly dress up the experience to make it feel as if I'm accomplishing something and that there is a reason to explore such-and-such a place. However, the game feels very rough around the edges, particularly with regards to each character's "story" set within the plot. In other words, the dialog reads pretty much the same for 95% of the game, no matter what character you choose. Still, I appreciate that I do have dialog options, even though they don't really amount to any consequence.

If they add on a nice plot, some puzzles, more dialog, etc. DS could turn into a nice action-based RPG (I haven't played DS2). Kind of like if Neverwinter Nights had actual real time combat, and you had to worry less about dice rolls and numbers.

So, while the game looks pretty, I'd want to know more about it before I play. One reason I stuck with DS: ToA was that it was more interactive than DS1 - ie. use of anolog stick for movement, slightly varied combat (utilizing button pressure sensitivity), and button-activated skills - whereas DS1 was "click to move here" "click to pick this up" and "click to attack". If DS3 has the option for PC users to use a game controller, that would be nice.

In general, I find hack-n-slash games svcker me in with the whole looting thing, but ultimately do not satisfy my desire for a story and character development. Without a satisfying conclusion, I'm usually left feeling like I wasted hours of my life and I don't even get a nice clever little ending that wraps up all the loose ends.

Obsidian tends to do storytelling well, if it makes you feel better.

Anyway, I'm probably not going to be playing it since it seems a lot like a Diablo clone, and I don't really like that sort of game (lots of people do though).

It's definitely a day one purchase for me but Obsidian screwed up the Multiplayer/Co-op a bit by having all the characters stick to one screen instead of doing something similar to what Sacred 2 did. I think they should've just focused on Single Player with Local Co-op.

At its core, the Dungeon Siege series is exactly that. What I find great about it is that it tries, and succeeds, at creating a large and immersive game world with interesting lore, plus provides a surprising amount of gameplay variety for a series that only contains four classes. However, It is essentially a Diablo clone, but a damn good one.

Edit: Actually, I'd like to mention something regarding the variety and Dungeon Siege 2. The main problem with 2 was that you basically had to form a party in order to survive the grueling encounters in that game, and most of the time, that would involve recruiting one of each class. And since you could still customize them like the player character, it took away a lot of replay value. It's still a good game, just not as replayable as DS1.

agree, It's just I fear they may "streamline" it down thus removing the lore, the gameplay variety etc etc, time will tell of course !

Oh what a glorious thread! People know about the Dungeon Siege games!

Well, I played the first two and their expansions when I was younger, so my like for them might just be for nostalgia's sake. I do agree that, on paper, it isn't really that great of a game. The new release seems a little more silly, but I will try it of course. I will buy it on PC and console since I simply must see how it is to play DS on the 360.. mindblowing ;P

And also good that someone remembers the chicken days of the first game. The multiplayer was so heavily modded.. but fantastic. Mass-Gom spawning, anyone?

It's made by Obsidian, I'm sure they wouldn't get too lazy on a game storywise.

Oh, crap, Obsidian? Then DS3 will be a buggy mess, is what it will be. Maybe a year after release they'll have patched it up.

That might've been the reason that the game has already been delayed twice as it was suppose to originally come out in March. I'm kinda glad it didn't because I probably wouldn't have gotten it but now I'm definitely going to get it. I do agree that Obsidian's past history with Bugs might be an issue so I'll just have to make sure I save as often as possible.

It is one of very few titles I′m getting this year for sure, played both 1 & 2, the only thing that bugged me with ds 2 was some stuff was hard to figure out ingame, specially a dragon you had to fight and it was almost impossible to beat without a guide, and for the first game it is probably time for a replaying session with it,been a very long time since last time.

Do have an expansion for ds 2.broken world but bad reviews and incompatible mods have put me off, might give it a spin if I′m bored.

Better yet to get the new game in the series :celebration:

I've never played either of the first two. Is the series isometric-viewed? What does gameplay consist of? How demanding on PC hardware will III be? I've noticed that it will be for the PS3, 360, and PC version, but if it's not too demanding, I'm not sure whether it would be better to get it on my PS3 (definitely my more capable platform) or my PC (much less capable than my PS3, but may be able to handle something not too demanding and if the interface and style of the game are more PC-oriented, I'm not sure if the PC version would be a better choice or not).
