Can you play remotely using IRC or some kind of similar chatroom?

Haven't played since high school (long before the rise of the world wide web).

With this much people I'm hoping to do a slower play by post game on a forum. IRC would probably get too crowded with text and stuff all at once. If I do IRC I'm for sure thinning the numbers down to 5 players, and not a one more.

I have not a microphone. Also using gametable and stuff is getting way to complex for a starting group. Just a forum, and it's dice roller to keep it simple at first. Although after start up if people agree en mas to change how we play the game ie from forums to skype or wherever I'm fine with that. Though starting simple is the key.

When I think of D&D I think of the books not the board game :P Probably because I only own the books

That's what we're talking about actually. Though technically I'm recruiting for Star Wars Saga which uses a d20 system.

Edit
Even in real life I don't use mini's, just make a map and let people know where stuff is on it, unless the trick is not letting them know where stuff is on it.

These forums I'm linking, it's going to be a newbie game so I don't expect hard core posting every day unless people want to. Though I'm going to try for a minimum of 1-2 updates a week. If people think they can handle more (and I think I can), we can increase the posting rate a little bit. http://www.giantitp.com/index.html

Edit
They have a dice roller built into the forum like a command. So it's convenient.

Edit2
No one has any era preferences for Star Wars so far?

Not really. BTW considering you have limited number of players I'm assuming you want hardcoe fans who know loads about the lore ?

There is a D&D board game?

No, not necessary to know anything at all. There's a wiki easily available for me to use to figure out lore. If you guys want to become lore buffs it's completely up to you and your interests. Though it might help if say an aquilish thug attacks you and everyone is like wtf is that? They can just wiki it if they want a picture. Or I can describe it, but otherwise no your not going to need that kind of stuff.

It's continuous, as in never ends. Though I'll only update one or twice a week, so very laid back and slow. If people all agree to increase the pace, and I think I can handle it we'll increase that pace.

Edit
If we all agree in the future we can have dedicated days where we all agree to be on and posting more frequently, but this would be outside of the norm.

Like I said I can take care of that if you know what I mean. You probably don't, but whatever. Just know that when it comes time to make characters and stuff we'll be on a different forum and I'll be able to solve that problem by then. So are you still interested Lemunde?

Sure.

Okay and we're full on applications. At this rate I have more players than expected, and I still have to see if Specters friends want in so they got spots reserved on the application list so to speak. I doubt my friend will join, but have to keep that open as a possibility. Finally just waiting for Capital to confirm he's still interested. If everyone shows up that's 9 people when I said 8 was the absolute maximum, and it looks like we have a majority of new players as well so hence taking 8. Though I expect this to dwindle down to 4-6 by the end of the first month of play.

Edit
Would be neat to see another game master step forward and offer to set up another game for something in case more people want a chance to play, but we're far and few in between.

I was actually thinking about setting up a Swords and Wizardry game, too. Newb GM with Newb players: the great combination. Luckily, S&W is very newb friendly, because it's basically OD&D.

Well 8... is fairly optimal. More so for people who aren't sure if they like it or not. It means we can suffer a few people drifting away from disinterest and have the people who are interested keep playing. In theory this works better than simply getting the necessary players you want.
