Depends on which game you want. You say DnD, but if you're this new to the medium, then you should know there are other games that are just as good, if not better. But lets start with a really basic thing.

Now, there are a few games I would suggest.
Dungeon and Dragons 4E: If you have to play DnD, this is the realistic option. It's pretty dang simple. Not terrible, but I feel (others might not) that it just doesn't offer enough customization, that isn't balanced with roleplaying.
Pathfinder: Basically a refined version of DnD 3.5. A really great game, and the one I understand the most (which really says something, since I'm terrible with rules). You get a lot of custimization with skills, feats, and a plethora of other character options.
Swords & Wizardry: One that really intrigues me. I have the Complete Rules, which is basically a refined version of Original DnD with a few niceties thrown in for modern gamers. It's heavily dungeon based, though, keeping with the old-school feel.
Castle & Crusades: I don't know a whole ton about this, but it was apparently the last engine Gygax created things for. It seems like a combination of 1st Ed DnD, 2nd Ed DnD, as well as 3rd Ed DnD. From what I hear, it's actually really fun for people.
Mongoose's Runequest II: My personal favorite. Entirely skill-based. It does have a problem that it doesn't really have a lot of info on making adventures and encounters. So it's easy to play, but hard to make playable, so to speak.
There are plenty of other types of PnP RPGs, in tons of different genres, but since you mentioned DnD, I gave you fantasy.
