A set of dice ranging from a d20 to a d4.

Anything else is purely optional.

It's kinda hard to play without a single handbook. getting items, levelup info and whatnot. Some can be found online, but not all of it.

Depends on which game you want. You say DnD, but if you're this new to the medium, then you should know there are other games that are just as good, if not better. But lets start with a really basic thing.

http://www.amazon.com/Chessix-Dice-Pound---Dice-Approximately/dp/B000X75BFE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302063699&sr=8-1

Now, there are a few games I would suggest.

Dungeon and Dragons 4E: If you have to play DnD, this is the realistic option. It's pretty dang simple. Not terrible, but I feel (others might not) that it just doesn't offer enough customization, that isn't balanced with roleplaying.

Pathfinder: Basically a refined version of DnD 3.5. A really great game, and the one I understand the most (which really says something, since I'm terrible with rules). You get a lot of custimization with skills, feats, and a plethora of other character options.

Swords & Wizardry: One that really intrigues me. I have the Complete Rules, which is basically a refined version of Original DnD with a few niceties thrown in for modern gamers. It's heavily dungeon based, though, keeping with the old-school feel.

Castle & Crusades: I don't know a whole ton about this, but it was apparently the last engine Gygax created things for. It seems like a combination of 1st Ed DnD, 2nd Ed DnD, as well as 3rd Ed DnD. From what I hear, it's actually really fun for people.

Mongoose's Runequest II: My personal favorite. Entirely skill-based. It does have a problem that it doesn't really have a lot of info on making adventures and encounters. So it's easy to play, but hard to make playable, so to speak.

There are plenty of other types of PnP RPGs, in tons of different genres, but since you mentioned DnD, I gave you fantasy.

There's also an online option if you don't have anyone to play with in real life. For online follow these three easy steps.

1. Find a game that looks interesting here or other similar site. > http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=51

2. Use these free 3.5 rules to make a character. They are of the previous edition 3.5, but they also have 4th which is simplified and streamlined. Only 3.5 has this free stuff though. http://www.d20srd.org/

3. Use this online dice roller, or you can use the one built into the above forums. Usually the game master prefers this. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm

That's it. Also we seriously need to get an online game going somewhere of BGSF players. I have no idea what RPG though, I have access to a few. This is just for fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHdXG2gV01k

I've been wanting to play DnD for a long time. I'll be up for it if anyone wants to start up a game and can bear someone with no experience whatsoever.

3.5, Saga edition (complete except the GM screen), and some nWoD. Though I suspect it would be easy for me to get my hands on some of the books if I really needed to.

I actually have nWoD as well as Mage. But I feel like those wouldn't be very good for internet play.

I have the core rules and Hunter the Vigil. I'm in a newbie friendly online nWoD game at the moment, other than the annoying rerolls it's not to bad. Though I've made some big mistakes trying to play it like 3.5 where it's a kick in the door style... ish.

Edit
Star Wars Saga edition is technically out of print, but it should be easy enough to find. It was the best of 3.5 and 4th edition in my opinion.

Didn't they come out with a new saga edition?

Well if we can't find a whole group here we can take it to some forums to look for a game master/more players to fill out the ranks. I know I'm tired of GMing and on a break. Just need to decide what game to post a recruitment add for.

Edit
Saga Edition IS the new one, but it has also ended and is out of print for the last year... or two I think. Should be tons of books out there and if your a diligent searcher online. Though I find myself using the core rulebook 95% of the time because that's where the best stuff is really. It's super flexible in terms of classes. 20 is max level, but you can split it up any way between the classes. Jedi, Noble, Scoundrel, Scout, and Soldier, and of course numerous prestige classes ect.

Odd how it wasn't so long ago that Super Mario Bros. and the like had the same image, yet Dungeons and Dragons, which generally requires that you have friends to play with you, never shook the reputation.

It's because everyone knows that Dungeon and Dragons will make you become a priestess in the Order of Diana.

IS that it?

Oh! We could also think Mongoose's Traveler if we want Sci-Fi

Really? Usually all my players characters are dead within a month, I try to keep them alive. They just happen to be impaired in critical thinking skills. I have no idea why they think it's a great idea to jump out of a speeder flying over friggen Coruscant at like... 700km/h and they aren't even Jedi or equipped with jetpacks or anything.

Edit
Yea, that's it.

Edit2
Hell yea look at those prices rise. I remember buying them new for 50 dollars. My collection must be worth more than when I bought it now.

Hehe. That, or you "keeping them alive" is just another way of saying, "I design the most horrible dungeons that make my players cry. But they're totally do-able" :P

No... one of them was surrounded by 200 Stormtroopers with heavy weapons while he was up against the door to a bar holding an Imperial Officer hostage and commanded the troopers not to shoot. He could have ran, but no he decides it's smart to shoot his hostage. You don't even want to know the 4 hours of fail leading to the cherry on top.

Edit
I originally planned for there to be like... 4 thugs in a bar, but somehow 200 stormtroopers later.

Edit2
You don't really have to learn it all at once. Just how to make a character, join a newbie game with someone to teach you the rest. Lots of it is for the GM to make stuff, and the players never touch it.

Just took a look at the v3.5 rules. Damn that's a lot of material. How are you meant to learn all that?

Wait, the ST actually managed to hit?! :P

It's actually way easier than it look. Since you have the wonderful unified mechanic (the D20), it's all pretty simple. I've been looking at the Pathfinder book a whole lot (basically 3.5), and most of the player part of the book is actually lists of spells and feats. Take those out, and it's actually really short. But if you're interested in simple, you might like Swords and Wizardry.

I really like both of them, but I almost always like RPGs, regardless.
