Dungeons with too much illumination?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:50 am

As I love Skyrim's dungeons with light years of distance compared to oblivion, I liked the darkness of the older game.
I never used a single torch in this game, and that just does not feel right imo, and some illumination just comes out of nowhere.

It would be great if there are candles with no fire that you could activate, and parts of dungeons in wich everything is complete darkness (not the entire dungeon though)

thoughts?

A mod that can let you snuff out light sources would be awesome. Don't know if it's possible though.

Very possible, torches and braziers have on and off states. just needs a mod.

Light sources are great, but really. Some of the barrows have been abandoned for ages. Who the heck is lighting all these flipping candles? Draugr?

People love to complain about this but I bet research shows the opposite. The lighting complaints remind me of people begging for MMO's to bring back corpse runs. Really? I know why I quit EQ (a few of the times).

I get the idea of roleplaying the need for a torch or light spell, but if you are talking about darkness beyond those then I think it's just an annoyance. I find myself using Light spells in at least parts of every dungeon.

what I don't get is how a lot of these dungeons manage to have holes in the roof
yet when I walk all over the top of them there isn't a hole in the ground to be found anywhere

btw I have needed to use a torch a couple of times
but that's mostly for finding stuff on dark floors or levers hidden in dark recesses
I kind of like how most dungeons are pretty light though
in oblivion I was pretty much walking around with night eye all the time
would be a shame to turn all the beauty that is skyrim into a bright purple mess like that (haven't even tried night eye in skyrim though)

while we're on the subject of torches
how good are they for blocking
I sometimes use them because they're in my hand anyway and I noticed you set stuff on fire with the shield bash
but I have no idea as to how good they actually block damage

Part of me agrees that it would be very annoying at times, but then the other part of me remembers back in the old day when Doom and Doom 2 could scare the [censored] out of you by having all of the lights go out suddenly. Doom 3 did a damn fine job of using darkness to add atmosphere to the game.

Yes, too much magical light sources. I long for darker dungeons where you actually need a torch.

You can tweak the settings to make it darker in both ini and the game settings brightness.

Plus there's a mod called "no tint" that makes darker nights and dungeons.

Oblivion was certainly improved by the darker dungeon mod(s). And also it was improved by the droppable/throwable torch mod. Those two together improved Oblivion far beyond the sum of each mod.

They would like a little less light. My brightness setting has me using torches and light spells regularly but I would love to tweak it down a bit further for some dungeons.

One reason I like the FXAA post-processing injector, nights and dark corners feel and look better.

I hate the idea of trying to "sneak" through a dungeon while carrying a torch, so I personally appreciate the light sources. That said, I also wish I could put the lights out on ALL torches rather than only SOME. But that's for sneaking more effectively. I only pull out a torch or use the spell candlelight when I've killed the all the mobs around, but I frequently WILL use torches or spells for light once the killing is done. I like the light levels and wouldn't want it darker. I tried to play Morrowind and the game didnt' have a gamma slider on the xbox and I couldn't make my TV bright enough to play it. Again, I play sneaky characters typically, and even if I were to play a tank, I'd want a shield in my offhand, not a torch...

I always find it funny when I use an item to unlock an area that has been closed off for many years and there are lit candles everywhere. I never used a torch and I must say, the game is easier this way, less hassle, but it becomes a less immersive world where everywhere you go, something magically keeps everything well lit for the honor of the dragonborn's visit.

It would be cool to have the candles and torches on the walls that you could light up if you wanted to (or not if you're a stealthy Khajiit), as you go deeper and deeper.

I think its perfect. Just enough to not require night vision or torch or candlelight, but I still use candlelight cause it helps me spot those elusive levers I keep walking by.

I'm okay with some dungeons being well lit, like the ones occupied by bandits for example. However, it would be really nice to go into a few pitch black dungeons - especially ones populated by the undead. They would have a nice survival horror feel to them.

It would also be cool if a dungeon was dark when you enter, but you could use your torch or flame spell to light all the candles and light fixtures as you went along. That way you would know where you have or haven't been yet.

I don't mind it so much when the illumination is coming from torches if the torches have a logical reason to be there, but there's just no justification for dungeons having tons of light with no actual light source.

Its all about keeping skyrim green.

the natural glow of mushrooms produces a smaller carbon footprint than requiring explorers to light up torches all the time. Not to mention all the NOx emissions from light or night-eye spellcasting....

Overall, I like most of the dungeons as is, but I do wish that the lighting was a bit better, making better use of light and dark, rather than light and slightly less light. There are a few dungeons that do it right, but you can tell that a number of different people worked on them, as the illumination in them can be all over the place.

Yup, I'd like much darker caves and caverns myself. Natural illumination from glowing mushrooms are fine, as are large caverns for the view - open holes in the ceiling allowing light through or glowing light sources inside ancient ruins - but entering a cave, I do expect it to be dark with no candles lighting the way. A torch flickering above your head as you step forth and hear the grunts and grinds of undead coming from the darkness around you is something I'd really like. Turn a corner and a gust of wind blows out your torch!

I am happy not to have to worry about using a torch most of the time. I use a spell and sword so need my hands free. Also torches are just extra dead weight I have to worry about.

Not having to juggle torches feels in line with the game's streamlining process, so I don't see that changing back. On the bright side, this issue is easily fixed with mods.

I'd love some really dark dungeons. Haven't used a torch or magelight for any of the dungeons I've done (160+) They definitely need some dark and scary dungeons...
