Dunmer (Dark Elf) ~Discussion~

I love everything they've done with their design EXCEPT for the forehead ... good god its AWFUL and makes me think of the stupid Klingons!!!! :flame: I am truly upset about it, and it almost makes me want to play as another race for my first character even though I've always played a Dark Elf in every RPG or Hack n Slash I've ever played.

As someone in said thread pointed out, "You can't kill an idea." Of course we don't know the general attitude of the Dunmer after 200 years, but I would hazard a guess that some at least hold the Tribunal's teachings close to heart, whether or not the Three themselves are gone (and they pretty much are..).

I said that:) and yes I agree

Well if you look at the presets 2nd row 1st male his brow looks normal so we'll at least be able to make the brow on our character smaller. I'm hoping some NPC's will also have smaller brows (especially the females).

Ah yes, now I remember, that *was* you!

I still can't get over the whole symbol being in the game haha. I wonder if there are any implications to this or if it's just a "for old time's sake" thing.

Dunmer are very conservative so...it makes sense, and you must consider the fact that most are refugee′s now (Vvardenfell blew up, but the rest of the country managed to escape)

That's what I was thinking too. After all, only like, three people believed you when you told them that Sotha Sil and Almalexia were dead. It may still take a long time for that to sink in, especially considering that the time the Tribunal ruled was considered a golden age. If nothing else, old beliefs could help them keep some of their culture and history together. Give them a sense of cultural identity in a world where they don't have a specific homeland anymore. Who knows, maybe some turned to the Tribunal's teachings for comfort.

To me, all of their brows are bad, and I too hope to see a less pronounced brow on the NPCs and especially the females.

I realize this, and I'm hoping that it's something a few sliders can correct, but it leads me to believe that all the NPCs in the game will have this horrible brow, and it will drive me nuts.

I don't like that they all look "evil" now.
I mean, I like the look(Well, for the males, at least...) but I think it's stupid that every single one of them look like they're going to stab you in the gut and then go after the rest of your family to do terrible things. It is just terrible visual design in my opinion.

It's not that face. Their faces are the grumpy faces of old geezers who watches kids trample on their lawn.

Yeah, that's why I refrained from saying it was their oldest belief system. Those who have read the lore know that the dunmer were originally daedra worshipers. And yes, the Tribunal are broken, but again I think some might still hold on to the teachings. And Vivec is actually, from what I've read, not dead. He's.. Well gone. It's hard to explain, but the last we actually "see" of Vivec is in something called "The Trial of Vivec" on the Imperial Library site. I suppose a lot could have changed in 200 years, however, and he could be dead now. Also, after Sotha Sil and Almalexia were killed, everyone who you told that they were dead either thought you were a heretic or just insane, so maybe there are a few who believe they're still "around." The only problem I see with that disbelief continuing into "modern" day Tamriel is that they would have heard nothing from the Three for centuries, so a lot of people would probably start thinking that they really ARE gone. I don't know, this is just my two cents.

You're probably right. I doubt the old temple hierarchy holds much power any more, though. Probably there will be some sort of mysticism and legend involved with the remembrance of the old ways. Many of the oldest dunmer would still be alive, health permitting.

In any case I don't think we'll hear much about the dunmer ways, as it seems this is the time for the Nords to have their culture fleshed out, but I would still like to see some records of what has happened in the last 200 years of Dunmer history.

I don't necessarily think they all look evil, but keep in mind, they are called dark elves.

They look better than I imagined they could.

I do too, we'll most likely see it in, in-game books and heard from various NPCs if any at all. That's one of the reasons I loved Morrowind was all the culture they gave to the player which was completely lost with Oblivion.

I dont see how Morrowind lovers can cut down on the new dark elves, if you look back at the old dunmers you an see that that old style is there now even better.

Yeah, I hope that isn't repeated this time. I don't mind which province we're in, as long as it doens't feel like a cliched empty world. I really hope they do Skyrim justice.

Exactly, these new ones are basically high-res Morrowind Dunmer. They modernised the graphics but kept the craggy hatchet faced style.

they all looked "evil" and "grumpy" in morrowind too. i honestly prefer it to the little ten year old looking bastards from oblivion. and im sure you could make them look a bit more neutral with some editing

I'm sure there will be at least a few references to it. I mean all the dunmer who lived Morrowind being forced into exile by an exploding volcano and argonian invasion would be a pretty important thing to address in the game in some way, I would imagine. Also, I feel I should mention that it's been a while since the initial event. I'm guessing this is the part where the dunmer try to heal/recover. Hopefully it won't be difficult. Many of Morrowind's survivors fled to Solstheim, so there are probably communities there. And there's apparently a town in Skyrim that was confirmed to be a dunmer community.

I love the look of Dunmer now. They look evil and educated. They definitely have a cursed look about them now. Dunmer will be my second character as a spellsword thief. I hope that there will be good racial banter between Argonians and Dunmer.

I'm sure there will be at least a few references to it. The Temple was an important part of dunmer culture for many many years. In the wake of a province-wide disaster, I would not be surprised if there were some who sought comfort in the Temple teachings.

Edit: Argh, sorry I pretty much double-posted. And my first post had nothing to do with the current topic about the Tribunal. Question, are you able to delete your own posts? I can't seem to find anything to do so... :ermm:

I think they look splendid, based on what I have seen from Beth's race/face page and the few creations that are floating around the 'net.

Not what might automatically be termed "pretty", but this only makes me glad! I hate it when all becomes bland, plastic, dull, and yes, "pretty" (in that tired, commercial, soulless sense).

Keep in mind that even when the Three were still alive during the events of Morrowind, only Vivec was a really public figure, and then only periodically. Their powers were waning from Dagoth Ur's influence over the Heart of Lorkhan. Almalexia went insane over her loss of power and hid herself in her temple in Mournhold. People believed she was there, but didn't have proof. Sotha Sil became so removed from mortal affairs he hadn't been seen in hundreds of years.

So, even when their gods ceased to walk among them the dunmer still believed.
