Dunmer from Morrowind *Spoilers*

Post » Fri Apr 22, 2011 11:26 pm

Do you think there are going to be remnants of the followers of the Tribunal (Since Vivec is most likely dead, there is nothing to worship), or will the Dunmer have turned back to worshipping Daedra?

Have the refugess become a part of Skyrim's identity, after 200 years?

What do you think the remnants of House Telvanni are up to, because from my understanding, they went east and were relatively unaffected by the Argonian invasion?

Any other questions related to the Dunmer in Skyrim?

Please discuss.

It's possible some may still follow the teachings of Vivec, but it would only be a handful of Dunmer at best. The reason the Ministry of Truth fell is largely due to the fact that the Dunmer forgot love.

I'm sure most Dunmer got converted by the Imperial Cult, seeing as they were not villainized the way that Daedric worship was in Morrowind, though of course some would revert back to that.

As far as the Telvanni go, I'm sure they're more or less just as well off as they've always been.

I really doubt that MOST of the Dunmer did. Remember that the Dunmer don't like anything outland-ish. (They even disliked Helseth, because he was 'too Imperial'). I think they would still follow the teachings of the Tribunal but, as Vivec said, they worship their ancestors and the three good daedra.

I think the fact that the Ministry of Truth fell is a good indication that they did not follow the teachings of the Tribunal. The Dunmer people forgot love. It's easy to imagine that they disregarded the Tribunal when finding out all three of them were either dead or had disappeared. A chaotic time, indeed, and that's when the Imperial cult would step in and offer a comforting pantheon of gods. The Dunmer of Morrowind had, for the most part, accepted Daedric worship as outlawed and punishable by death, whereas members of the Imperial cult were usually tolerated as neighbors--sometimes disliked and disagreeable, but tolerated none-the-less.

I thought it was ironic the New Temple built its Ministry of Truth inside Lie Rock.

I guess Vivec had mixed truth with lies.

I've always taken the 'forgot love' aspect of the Ministry of Truth falling with a grain of salt. It sounds like just the sort of vague excuse that Vivec would use as a cover should his power ever actually fall: "this was a divine punishment for forgetting the teachings of ALMSILVI. (And not because I'm now impotent)." I'd be more willing to believe the rock fell because Vivec vanished. This would either be due to the player killing him, or his disappearance in the Oblivion time-period. Either way, the result ends up the same.

Also, I can see the Dunmer for the most part reverting to worship of the Anticipations. Perhaps there would be a considerable shake up, leading to the fall of the Tribunal being seen as a part of doctrine, and a reemergence of the 'Good Daedra' as the 'Manifestations' as opposed to 'Anticipations'. A good priest or prophet should be able to spin that one nicely, with the whole 'end of days' and mass evacuation thing going on.

I'd say Dunmer of Morrowind would be split into two groups: those who worship the Daedra and those who worship the Imperial Cult. The Emperor sent Nerevearine there so he could put his Conversion plan into motion if Nerevearine succeeded. Helseth would also have given his best to convert them.

However, how destruction affected Dunmer religion after the Cataclysm remains unknown. With 200 years span, anything could have happened...

And yet the rock remains for a good few years after his disappearance without his intervention.

Love is pretty powerful in TES.

I think many of the dunmer will revert to daedra worship, some may abandon tradition entirely.

I do hope that the Dunmer haven't converted to the Imperial Cult. One of their main appeals for me was their disdain for all things Imperial.

I hope they revert to Daedra worship as Cecliff mentions. That, ancestor worship or just a complete lack of faith.

I have a feeling they'll be way too disenfranchised by the Tribunal and the princes, due to the Oblivion Crisis and the Red Year. Likely, they'll follow what the nords do, or go back to ancestor worship. I have a feeling it'll be much more of the latter and less of the former. Also, [censored] the Imperial Cult! It's more 9 [censored] that I don't want to see or hear about.

Have the refugess become a part of Skyrim's identity, after 200 years?
We'll have to play the game, won't we? Honestly, a very small part. Currently, there is only one town of only dunmer in Skyrim. Likely to most nords, they're likely still refugees. Also, you have to remember that mer breed slowly. Where as humans, and most likely orsimer, can breed like bunnies, relatively.

What do you think the remnants of House Telvanni are up to, because from my understanding, they went east and were relatively unaffected by the Argonian invasion?
Dead, nonexistent, or still cooped up in their towers when no one else is around. Also, they have always lived east. Living in east Morrowind was not a response to the argonians.

I think the surviving Dunmer are going to revert to ancestor worship. The Ashlanders still practiced it in Morrowind, the dissapearance of the Tribunal and the changes to Temple Doctrine after events in Morrowind were going in that direction.
My opinion on the collapse of The Ministry of Truth is that the forces who refused to allow themselves to give up the rigid Temple doctrine kept the Ministry hovering out of pride. They could have used the power that was keeping it aloft to slowly lower it to the ground.
The Imperial Cult is not the predominent Religion where the Refugees settle, the Skall could almost be monotheistic in thier worship of "The All Maker". Most Imperialised Dunmer would probably resent the Empires lack of assistance during the Argonian invasion of the Mainland Velothi holdings.

I thought all we were told is that Windhelm was influenced by Dunmer, not that it consists purely of Dunmer...
Or are you talking about something else?

Nor is the 9 the predominate religion of Skyrim. The nordic pantheon will be, with Shor being the most revered.

Why does this thread have *spoilers in the title? Is there something revealed in here about Skyrim by a dev? I'm certain that everyone who's interested in the lore has at least read summaries of Morrowind, Oblivion, and Infernal City by now.

Do we really know the situation of religion in Skyrim post-Imperial collapse? I know that the 8/9 divines was a fusion of nordic/elven pantheons so they weren't crazy about it but have they reverted back to a full nordic pantheon (or maybe never really left it)?

In all likelihood, the nords never left their pantheon at all! The 9 was only a Cyrodiilic thing that became more incorporated in Daggerfall and High Rock than anywhere else. Hell, the nords have their own name for Talos, and his own place, along with other gods and such. Come on, man, the nords are particularly known for their hatred of merish things. Considering how the 9 is nothing more than the merish pantheon with a sprinkle of nordic and a 180 change of the god of time, it would be very unnord-like for a nord to follow the 9.

It would be like as though half the population of the dunmer decided to follow the 9!

It's mentioned in Oblivion that the nords of Bruma prefer Ysmir to Talos, much to the dismay of the nibenese chapel goers.

I was unsure of how much being part of the empire for so long had effected them culturally. Also, I don't think the comparison to the Dunmer goes very far due to a. the Tribunal presence and b. they already worshiped Daedra.

I wasn't having any luck finding any books in the library on the status of Nordic religion during Imperial rule. Realistically this question will be answered in the run up to the game or immediately once it comes out but I was just curious.

The Nords are the Empire, whether the Empire thinks so or not.

That's basically where my question was coming from. Nordic and elven influences clearly push and pull the culture of Cyrodiil in opposing directions for a variety of reasons, I was wondering if there was any lore regarding how much Skyrim itself had been affected culturally/theologically by this dynamic.

There is currently no lore about that beyond the pocket guides to the empire and maybe that city guide on Bruma.

It's said the west of Skyrim is cosmopolitan. That's in the late second era, accorded by the pocket guide. By the fourth, you have two sides of a civil war: pro-Imperial vs traditionalists.
