Dunwich Borers - What happened here?

Post » Fri Jan 15, 2016 9:04 am

I think that as you gain levels your radial quests get a little harder. Anyone notice this?

I'm at level 63 now and was sent to Dunwich Borers to kill some raiders.

The Sneak bobblehead is deep inside, but even after you reach it, you still have a long trek ahead if you plan on getting to the end and the legendary weapon. Make sure you have aquagirl/boy so you can breathe underwater. Maybe you could get to the weapon without, but I wouldn't try it.

It seems something weird happened here that I won't go into in case you haven't been there, but it's pretty interesting. lol

Bring LOTS of Stimpacks if you are going in. I went in without power armor because I've long since abandoned it's clunkiness.

And you should probably try to have your strong back maxed out because you will come out with a crazy amount of weapons/armor/junk and it's really handy to use your action points toward running and fast traveling.

It's just Fallout 4's obligatory Bethesda Lovecraft reference.

Yeah?? And you made it to the end? I almost died a couple times, but again, I'm not using power armor, so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage. it wasn't an easy area at all, in my opinion.

Also you can survive the pool at the end without mirelurk cakes or Aquaboy/girl if you are just willing to spam some stimpacks to heal yourself on the way back to the top.

Well I'm not sure how hard it would be to do it because I have aquagirl, so I took my time.

I think I took PA just for that.

These days I am w/o PA too.

I have an Endurance of 1. My characters tend to be glass cannons.

My experience is that wearing PA is a one-way trip to bottom of the water-filled pit. Because the side shaft is about 1/3 of the way from the bottom, i couldn't even see the grand finale.

My character is lv.57, and has been tough enough to deal with anything without using PA for most of it... But I like to "suit up" all the same, just for the badass factor. I'm a Wahammer 40K fan, and FO4 is the ONLY game to come anywhere near depicting Astartes-style PA properly, including the game where you are an ACTUAL Space Marine.

My dude is a bulletproof god-of-battle either way, but in PA he looks & feels like one. Mechanized clothes FTW.

I lost my power armor's frame to that pit.

Was an awesome place, though.

I went down to the bottom then up and inside the room with the weapon on the way up at this point I was taking damage because of lack of air but managed it.

Its also some food you can make from minelurks who let you breath underwater.

I popped out of my PA, left Piper to guard it (though there was no one to guard it from at this point) and just swam. This was before I learned how to make Mirelurk Cakes (which are the ones that give you the ability to breath underwater I believe). I have a hard time seeing underwater in this game, so it took me a couple fo tries to find the side cave.

The raiders there are a bit tough, but I play a sneaky-sniper (with the 2mm gauss rifle at 328 base damage, currently) in PA. I always say, "if I had the powers of Superman, I would still fight like Batman."

aqua girl/boy is a complete talent waste. You don't need it to get the legendary in Dunwich Borers, in fact you don't need this perk ever really, not enough underwater areas or interesting things in the water to warrant having it. For flavor sure, go right ahead but that's all it is.

It's really not as hard as people seem to be making it out to be, if you take your time. And power armor is absolutely unnecessary, I don't know why a few of you guys are making it out to be some huge disadvantage. Just don't go running through there like a bat [censored] crazy lunatic and you should be just fine.

You don't have to complete the whole dungeon to complete the radiant, eh? Or maybe there are various variable radiants that get sent there?

I have had two radiants that went there, and all I had to do was kill the raider boss in the first bit of dungeon. I did peek on into the feral zone a bit, but not very far. Nicely done.

Pretty sure it is a marble mine, eh? Actually, longest cave in Massachusetts (all ~600 feet of it!) is in Marble, but if memory serves it is way the heck over toward Deerfield. Damn glaciers did a number on the caves, whatever few of them there were before the whole landscape got plowed by a giant ice sheet and inundated in terminal moraine and lakes.

I doubt that the depiction of the dramatic vertical extent of the mine is very realistic, but it is very cool nonetheless. One of the more "engaging" underground scenes I've encountered in a game :)

Well in order to complete my quest I had to actually go down inside the underground area. or else I never would have found the entrance. I think I completed it fairly easily, but then I got really curious about what was at the bottom. I loved the suspense! I wish there were more areas like that.

It sounds like it is quite a lengthy dungeon and I do wish there were more of those in Beth games.

I discovered this place quite by accident. After taking out a few Raiders, I followed this path into the quarry and found a dead body. Looted it, proud of my accomplishment of yet another Raider raid (hehe).

As I was walking out, I noticed a pathway and said, "Hmm. Where does this go, I wonder?" Dropping down, I find the door and hover over to see "Dunwich Borers" pop-up onscreen.

Immediately, two thoughts came to mind: "Damn it! Ghouls!" and "There's a bobblehead in here. Time to go in!"

I can't even remember the level I was at, but once I entered, the low-level fog and poor lighting instantly changed the atmosphere of the game. I actually started getting freaked out, but Dogmeat and I moved on. Sure enough, ghouls, ghouls, ghouls! Pop 'em left. Pop 'em right. Pop 'em OMG ARE THEY COMING OUT OF THE CEILING? Yep. Oh well.

Anyone try counting as they take them out? If you're curious to how many are in there, I hit 42 total, though I'll admit I probably lost count a few times given how they kept spilling into the tight spaces. That's quite the number of ghouls.

I heard rumors about some pool, so I dived in and found a butter knife. I guess it's not all bad. It spreads butter out nicely.

I found an elevator and took the ride out, and daylight greeted me. All I could think after that was "THIS IS THE BEST DAMN AREA IN THE GAME!"

Yep. Still remains so even after dropping over 260 hours into the game.

I'm curious to those who went in at higher levels: did the ghoul level change? I think the strongest I saw was a Ghoul Reaver and a Putrid Glowing One.

42 dead ghouls? strange... that is the answer to the meaning of life!

what level are you playing to see that many?

I don't remember what level I was when I hit the area. If memory serves, there are 6 sections which have switches to turn on the lights. There's usually 6-8 ghouls that attack at each area, plus the bigguns to take down, so that's how I figured at least 42. I probably could have gone back to count them, but hell no! I wanted out of that spooky place.
