Dutch cover story: Interesting Info #2

After calming a bit down I like the news a bit better, but I still boil a bit with rage about fast travel... so many things that can go wrong, but if I′m lucky they design and test the game 100% without fast travel and only then throw fast travel in like as the last thing they do with the entire game.

Well I'm completely serius when I say I won't buy the game if its nothing but completely typichal rpg stuff like deers trolls minotaurs without a single unique thing you can't see in other games...

If you believe there won't be a single unique thing then you already shouldn't be buying the game...

on size: it's overrated. It is nice when things are big, but it is really the experience that counts.
*snip*

Well... the experience for me is ruined when you see a dungeon every 30 seconds. I hate worlds being cramped up. Feels so unrealistic. And it destroys the experience for me.
Skyrim being cramped up would be un-nice :(

The ability to view items in 3d and maybe solve puzzles with them reminds me of Resident Evil.

Oblivon was actually vast. it just didn't feel that way because every place looked the same. and BTW, 5 MAJOR cities, doesn't mean there's no OTHER cities. the imperial city was the only MAJOR city oblivion

with fast travel, they're not ignoring their fanbase. honestly, I prefer to have a feature that I won't use, than to not have one that I'd like.

seems like people these days can't play a game if one or two pixels are slightly off. seriously, STOP [censored] WHINING!! The game'll be awesome anyways.

and BTW, just an off-topic about fast-travel: it IS toggle-able. open the map and select one place to turn in on. close it to turn it off. I don't see how it's SO hard to ignore.

seriously, some people need to [censored] take some time to "build something" instead of bashing what's already there...

'people these days'- As though you have been around for more than 3-4 years at the most.

Also, 'build something'? You do actually want people to take you seriously, right?

They are, demonstrably, ignoring their fanbase, the opinions reflected in every poll here stand as testament to that. People want a less abrasive, overt system to fast travel with, it's a simple matter of immersion- you may wish to watch Yahtzee's Oblivion review for a slightly more aggressive illustration of this 'http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/75-Oblivion'.

'one or two pixels'- So the same people who are celebrating the fact that books in the game are 3D are now calling people who are genuinely concerned about pretty major components of the game petty? Honestly?

Wow, that's just awesome! Laponia?

I agree it's not a big deal. They're more important things to possibly (Censored) over then low fantasy Reference when that reference itself could be the wrong interpetations of the author.

Do you understand that its been stated skyrim is the same size as cyrodiil and has FEWER dungeons which means it will feel LESS cramped?

I don't trust that source either! Especially since it was written before Fallout 3 actually was released! :P

50% is out of the question, I'd say. I remember feeling it was pretty big when I played it ^^
Felt pretty much like Oblivion.

But it really doesn't matter, this is turning totally off topic :P

I... really hoped the world of Skyrim would be bigger though =/

@ofnir123: Oblivion didn't feel that vast to me. At least not once I got my speed up a bit. Then I could walk from one end to another in like 10-15 minutes.

Fallout 3 1sq mile smaller than OB.

What about ice wraiths? They are described as terrifying entities who literally form before your eyes out of frozen winds. They look like cyrstaline, ethereal serpents made of wind and ice.

What about the Daedra in every TES that will likely show up in this game as well?

What about the dragons? I know Dragons are fairly typical of fantasy and RPGs, but I haven't seen huge ones flying around at random in an open-world game before, attacking cities, have you?

No dual magic makes me a sad panda as well :(

Lemme try to clarify this for some worried folks.

In the GI issue, it mentioned how we can set 2 different things in each hand. It said you could do it with magic, with weapons, or anything else. It never mentioned you could combine two different spells to create some crazy awesome effect, it said we could combine put two of the same spells in each hand to make them extra powerful.

Now here is what you can do in Skyrim:

Left Hand Spell 1# vs 1H Right Hand Weapon = You can swing your weapon in the right hand, and cast spells with the left hand, and vice versa. Just like with Oblivion, but now there is no casting button, that means you wont be able to duel wield daggers and still cast spells, or use a shield and a sword and try to cast a spell.

Left Hand Spell 1# vs Right Hand Spell 2# = Like some games that allows duel wielding pistols, it will work pretty much the same. Shoot right spell, shoot left spell, or shoot right spell, shoot right spell again and then shoot left spell, or any combo in between. You can't combine both spells to create some physics law defying and crazy whacky spell.

Left Hand Spell 1# vs Right Hand Spell 1# = Same as above, but now you have the option to use them at the same time to double the power.

Some folks are also worried about spell creation, it will probably work the same as in Oblivion. You could create a spell with Fire, lighting and frost effect all together, it wouldn't have a different cool crazy shader effect, but it would still work.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I don't see how mods for Oblivion have to do with the base line main quest time of Oblivion and Morrowind....

I'm saying that if a mod can manage 15 hours,a game studio should at least double it...

I liked Morrowinds fast travel system best myself, but this fanatical, jihad-like opposition towards fast travel borders on the ridiculous. It really isn't that big of a deal. I didn't like instant fast travel in Oblivion, so I walked instead. Worked for me. And it worked in Daggerfall as well. Oblivion seems to be a decent compromise - those who want it can use it, those who don't are free to ignore it.

Several times throughout the original Resident Evils examining items in 3d was the only way to solve puzzles and beat the game.

In the Playstation (1) era Resident Evil games (or was it only in Resident Evil 1?) it was possible to check the item in freely rotatable 3D view. You could find stuff hidden in them, like a text engraved in an item, or a key hidden in a book.

I was expecting the map not to try to out size Oblivion from the start. I felt that they were really stretching themselves thin with Oblivion with contents. I've said it before: More packed, more variety, less justification to use fast travel.

In ignoring forum requests concerning fast travel, Bethesda are just doing what makes sense from a bussiness point of view. Like it or not Oblivion opened the TES series to a much larged portion of the market wich includes players who never played an RPG before, and generaly a very large portion of "casual" players who don't care about the series enough to post on these forums, but will buy the game nevertheless. So in truth Bethesda are only going with what they think will be better for the majority (and sales), not the vocal minority of these forums.

I still don't like it of course.

Yes I know. I meant can you give a specific example please? How can viewing a sword in 3d in the inventory or a potion bottle solve a puzzle?

Maybe its because the official opinion on this forum isn't the be all and end all of TES fans? :ermm: Todd said that he looked at a VARIETY of sources to see what the fans wanted, which is far from ignoring the fanbase. He's just not going to cater to every beckon and whim of the Morrowind groupies, a few of whom will knock down ANY change, even if it objectively suits the game better.

I'm happy that the world will be the same size as Oblivion and have less dungeons. That means that they are focusing on quality over generic quantity this time. Also, I personally don't want miles and miles of empty, barren land. That's useless to the game and a waste of space.

I'm so sick of commenting on the fact that fast travel is OPTIONAL that I won't even bother...
