So, Dwemer ruins were once their cities, correct? You can see that they have living quarters, dining areas, armories, etc.

If that's the case, why the hell did they fill their damn cities with traps? I got turned into mince meat by these spinning blades that activated when I opened a door. What kind of moron would design his CITY to have deadly traps rigged to half the doors and staircases?

Did the Dwemer king just think "Ah, we might go extinct, let's place THOUSANDS of traps, just to [censored] with any adventurers that may try to explore our ruins." I wonder if THAT'S how the Dwemer went extinct. Thousands dying to the SPINNING BLADES OF DEATH that two-shotted my orc in all his Daedric armor.

So, thoughts? I'm still surprised that scholars haven't figured out the Dwemers cause of extinction. The last few probably just left false notes that they didn't die in a completely [censored] manner.

It makes perfect sense, the Dwemer have automated Darwin's Law.

Still better than the Ayleid ruins in Oblivion. There they didn't even bother with living quarters or anything like that most of the time, it was just one uninhabitable deathtrap room after another. :P

Anything is better than the disastrous ruins that was the Aylied ruins. They was so poorly implemented and designed. Not to mention it was the same repeated things over and over. I would like to see Aylied ruins designed similar to Morrowind design of the Dwemer ruins.

Yes, that is EXACTLY the same observation made about Aylied cities in Oblivion.

Maybe it was just the style in ancient Tamriel to put really cool traps in your homes. And maybe it explains why both the Dwemer and the Aylieds are extinct.

So we can learn something from the game. If you are building a custom house, maybe skip the swinging blades in the hallway option - no matter how much the builder discounts it.

I always figured the animunculi and automated defenses were that way all the time. The dwemer where darn near immortal, they seemed to have the most advanced everything, and openly defied the aedra and deadra. I would have put those traps and sentinels there too.

I also believe that the animunculi where designed to recognize a dwemer. Or the dwemer had a way to speak with their machines, perhaps with their unique calling power.

I like to think of it as a home security system.

This is one of the big things I liked so much more in Fallout 3 and Skyrim compared to Oblivion. In Oblivion, caves/ruins were dungeons: Underground places with traps and monsters to kill. In Fallout 3 and Skyrim they're much more realistic. They're often places with a reason for being there, and with a layout that makes sense. You can really imagine that people lived in there in the past, or that it had an actual purpose.

I'm taking a note out of Dwemer books and setting up a shotgun trap on every door in my house. Good luck to any adventurers getting my stuff in 70-80 years (Hopefully if smoking doesn't kill me first) when I'm extinct.

And what's wrong with saying that? It would have been more cool to have candles in abandoned places be something you have to activate or even replace.

I'm sure they knew where the traps were and were smart enough to avoid them. You're the complete moron for stepping on them. :P

Also they probably were inactive during peace times.

Yup they were morons... They built an entire city and forgot to put in any toilets.

And what do you think this "dwarven metal" is made of, eh?

Also, I support the idea of them being on the moon, to return with great flying saucers and huge robots! :D

3 million Dwemer lives ended on Sundas 29th of Last Seed, First Era. The survivors called the war Judgment Day. They lived only to face a new nightmare: the war against the machines. The automaton which controlled the machines, Skynet, activated hordes of traps. Their mission: to destroy any surviving Dwemers and forever be a pain in the ass for any adventurer wanting to explore.

the reason the dwarves disappeared is revealed in Morrowwind.

Spoiler
they attempted to create their own gods using a few magical artifacts and their whole race was punished for doing so resulting in them disappearing.
later to be used by other elves to create the tribunal ->Vivec etc which their race also got cursed by as they became the dunmer instead.

yes a spoler in general where no spoilers are meant to be however it's a morrowwing spoiler so less spoilery

My bold prediction: The dwemer are hiding somewhere and will be a playable race somewhere down the line. Maybe years from now or consoles from now.

It's more likely that the dwemer cities and devices were designed to go into "defensive mode" after a certain amount of time. In any case not all dwemer ruins were cities. They were more like strongholds. :)

Hundreds of years from now some new or alien race might be thinking that about our government technological firewalls and storage areas to hold information. They were at war.

Well any fortress needs proper defense right... Wether the inhabitant are extinct or not. I'd rather call them smart, building in rugged, mechanic traps to fend off potiential attackers (or treasure hunters).
