[RELz] Dwemeric Fonts (version 2)

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 3:17 am

For those wanting to create mods with Dwemeri runes in them, I have created a series of Dwemeri fonts in Windows TrueType format for use as a modder's resource. These fonts were inspired by Dongle's Dwemeris fonts. These fonts come in three styles: Dwemeri Block, Dwemeri Chirographic, and Dwemeri Engraved. Dwemeri Block was inspired by the runes found in the books Divine Metaphysics and The Egg Of Time (from TES3: Morrowind) and Favoril's Book of Dwarven Lore (from TES: Redguard). Dwemeri Chirographic was inspired by the runes found in several documents in Skyrim (from TES5: Skyrim). Dwemeri Engraved was inspired by the Wormgod runes found in Vvardenfell (from TES3: Morrowind) and the Ayleid runes found in Cyrodiil (from TES4: Oblivion). Each style is further divided into two or three regional variants: Western (Skyrim), Eastern (Morrowind), and Southern (Cyrodiil), as these regions have been shown to have different runes for some letters.

Anyone who wants to check these fonts out can http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19718.

The following are some images showing what the fonts look like:

NOTE: This mod is a modder's resource which means it's not something you can plug directly into the game. Rather, these are Windows fonts that can be used to place dwemer runes onto textures which can then be applied to various objects (walls, weapons, etc.) in the game.

If anyone is having any problems with these fonts, try downloading the latest versions (uploaded on 09 Jan 2012). If you're still experiencing problems, please post them here and I'll address them as soon as possible.

For those following this thread, I've updated my Block and Cursive fonts and I've finished and added the Chisel fonts as well. I think the Chisel fonts turned out really nice; they're not an exact copy of the glyphs found in TESV:Skyrim, but they were definitely inspired by them. I've also split the Cursive fonts into three regional variants: Western, Eastern, and Southern. (This came about as I noticed the differences between the Wormgod glyphs in Vvardenfell and the Ayleid glyphs in Cyrodiil, and wanted to preserve both styles in separate fonts.)

I'll try to update the original post later on tonight when I have time. Enjoy!

You're very welcome, garx.

For everyone else, I've updated the original post to reflect the new release and fixes. As always, I welcome all comments, questions, critiques, suggestions, and requests. (Yes, I might even consider making some more Dwemeri fonts if there's a particular style you've got in mind. Ask away!)

Something I have forgotten to make note of is that while all of these fonts are currently monospaced, only the Block and Chisel fonts were meant to be monospaced. The Cursive fonts were not designed to be monospaced, so some of the glyphs (such as the "A" and "a" glyphs ) have too much room on either side. I will adjust the bearings (the left/right margins) of the cursive fonts at some point in the near future, but right now I'm taking a break.

I guess I lied... not taking a break just yet. Found a few minor things to fix (the hyphen in the Block fonts and the underscore in the Cursive Engraved fonts). So now we're up to version 2.1.1. I've also created some better (in my opinion) font sample screenshots:

http://www.darkharbor.com/alathan/mods/dwemer/fonts/DwemeriBlockSamples.jpg

http://www.darkharbor.com/alathan/mods/dwemer/fonts/DwemeriChirographicSamples.jpg (formerly Dwemeri Chisel)

http://www.darkharbor.com/alathan/mods/dwemer/fonts/DwemeriEngravedSamples.jpg (formerly Dwemeri Cursive)

I think these better highlight how the fonts look in actual use. The first two lines are pangrams (they contain every letter in the alphabet) in upper case and lower case (respectively), and the last four lines utilize the numbers as well. (For those with lots of time to kill, you're welcome to translate them if you want.)

NOTE: Updated to reflect the new font names (as of version 2.1.2).

For those interested, I've updated my Dwemeri fonts, fixing a few minor font encoding issues, renaming the Chisel fonts to Chirographic, and renaming the Cursive fonts to Engraved, as those names more accurately reflect those particular fonts' styles and where they are found in Tamriel. I'll update the original post shortly.

While I'm at it and still in the groove, I am considering creating two new styles of Dwemeri: a "blackletter" style inspired by the Falmer runes found in Skyrim, and a "handwriting" style resembling true cursive or joined-up writing. Are there any other styles that anyone out there would like to see?
